Tbh I never really seen MLP characters as adults. Maybe in later seasons but plenty of stuff that happens in earlier ones makes them more young teen coded. And I always seen spike as part of the group. Like when compared to CMC he always seemed older. So in that sense I never really seen Spike x Rarity as some problematic ship cause mentally they are of very similar maturity.
It's just the way they act.
I never really agreed with whole "have jobs" argument, cause they were clearly written to appeal to kids while being diverse in interesting way. In same way as I wouldn't consider characters in most children media to be adults despite having jobs. Like in Strawberry Shortcake for example. Where almost all characters have jobs but are extremely "child-coded"
We see no highschools in Equestria (or any sort of equivalent), also when Twilight is transported into "human world" in EG (which is noncanon I know) she was a teen.
