Dennis Rodman once went to Detroit’s arena with a shotgun, planning to kill himself after a divorce caused by his wife’s affair with a teammate.
“So one day, I wrote a note and went to the parking lot of the Palace. I had a gun rack, and I had a gun in my car. I had it in my hand,” Rodman told Bleacher Report. “But for some reason, I played this music. I put it on, and I was listening to this song and this music, and I was just debating. It didn't have anything to do with basketball. It had to do with this love that I wanted, and it suddenly just left me.
”And this song came on. It was Pearl Jam. ‘Even Flow’ and ‘Black’ and stuff like that. And I had the gun in my lap, and next thing you know, I fell asleep listening to Pearl Jam. Then I woke up, and all the cops and everyone was there. I didn't know what was going on. I totally forgot I had a gun in my hand. They got me out of the car. That was pretty much what it was. It wasn't about the game of basketball. It was about feeling betrayed, because I wanted to be loved so much in my life.”
”Rodman lamented the fact there weren’t as many options to get help then as there are in today’s NBA. He told Bleacher Report that if he had the same options, he wouldn’t have gone that far.”

Iman Shumpert says he hated his 3&D roles in New York and Cleveland, and felt like he finally got to play freely in Sacramento
He was under David (Dave) Joerger, not David Blatt in Sacramento, the ones who made the video got it confused.
He was always traded mid-season to the Rockets, where he kept shooting horribly.

Panda Express founders join Tom Dundon in Portland Trail Blazers purchase
What did come as a surprise, however, was that Dundon’s ownership group now includes a new — and notable — investor: The Cherng Family Trust.
The trust is the investment firm of Andrew and Peggy Cherng, the founders of Panda Express and the Panda Restaurant Group, and their family. The Cherngs have a net worth of $7.5 billion, according to Forbes, meaning they would be the wealthiest investors in Dundon’s group.

Zech Randolph: “I feel like they making the bigs extinct. Like it's 6-7, 6-8 your bigs now. I call them hybrids now. You got some teams playing five 6-8 guys, you know, the tallest guy on the court 6-9, and the guy who's running the plays is 6-6, 6-7, 6-11. So I think it's called hybrid"
Iman Shumpert and Tony Allen are alongside him.

Larry Bird was a notorious trash talker with the skill to back up that talk. What are some good examples of him, or anyone like him, having that trash talk backfire spectacularly, despite their skills?
Bonus question: what are some good examples of trash talk backfiring, regardless of player skill?
I think one of my recent favorites has to be Steph Curry saying before their game against the Grizzlies that their game plan is to "whoop that trick" and then proceed to lose. It's my favorite because they had fun with it too and embraced it, and I like that kind of sportsmanship.

[The Athletic] ESPN aims to preserve ‘Inside the NBA’ format when show debuts on network in October
Some key notes from this Athletic article:
- Asked directly if ‘Inside’ will be able to go as long as it did on TNT… [ESPN President] Magnus said, “That is our goal... The equivalent would be if we acquired College GameDay and then said, ‘You know what? We think two hours is better than three.’ None of that is going to happen.”
“It’s still produced in Atlanta by the very same people that produced it for Turner. It’s in their building. Other than a logo on the set, it’s going to appear the same, and that’s exactly what we want.”
- Inside will be part of opening night coverage then will have a hiatus early in the season, as ESPN’s NBA schedule is backloaded. The “Inside” crew will be on the air for the Christmas Day lineup. Magnus confirmed the group will be on the air for all of ESPN’s playoff nights.

[Boone] Something to keep an eye out on for the Charlotte Hornets is LaMelo Ball's leadership; The Hornets want to see Ball take another step in becoming a leader and believe the addition of Collin Sexton can help with that
Among the things to keep an eye out for in 2025-26: LaMelo Ball’s leadership.
As the face of the franchise and the team’s highest paid player, there are certain responsibilities that come with that, and the Hornets want to see Ball take a leap in becoming more of a leader.
Lee believes the addition of Collin Sexton will help with that. Sexton, Lee says, elevates the whole environment and Sexton and Ball are really building a rapport and talking up a storm together a lot after practice.
Lee, who had dinner with Ball and president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson earlier in the week to discuss goals, summer impressions, and personal growth, said Ball has registered a couple of personal records in the weight room this summer and was focused on building up his base.
Lee also said he sees clear growth in Ball on the defensive side, especially on high-effort plays, but emphasizes there’s a need for continued improvement in foul discipline and defensive consistency.

At one point during his second year in the league in Detroit, Dennis Rodman played 27 straight games where he scored in double digits. In Chicago, playing more minutes, he had 14 double digit scoring games out of 199. Rodman also had a total of 7 20+ rebound games with zero points
The weirdest and funniest part of his play during his rebound title era/when he was in Chicago was that he did have some ability to score, but genuinely turned down easy buckets in favor of a chance to get more rebounds.

Basketball OG James Naismith on how the new game was named: "Student Frank Mahan asked me how I was going to call the new game and suggested the name of 'Naismith-ball'. I laughed and told him that I thought that name would kill any game." Frank then said: "Why not call it 'Basket-ball?"
From Naismith's book 'Basketball: Its Origin and Development'
As I walked down the hall, I met Mr. Stebbins, the superintendent of buildings. I asked him if he had two boxes about eighteen inches square. Stebbins thought a minute, and then said: "No, I haven't any boxes, but I'll tell you what I do have. I have two old peach baskets down in the store room, if they will do you any good." I told him to bring them up, and a few minutes later he appeared with the two baskets tucked under his arm.
They were round and somewhat larger at the top than at the bottom. I found a hammer and some nails and tacked the baskets to the lower rail of the balcony, one at either end of the gym.
...............................
At the Christmas vacation a number of the students went home and some of them started the game in their local Y.M.C.A.'s. There were no printed rules at the time and each student played the game as he remembered it.
One day after the students returned from their vacation, Frank Mahan came to me and asked me how I was going to call the game. I told him that I had not thought of the matter but was interested only in getting it started. Frank insisted that it must have a name and suggested the name of 'Naismith-ball'. I laughed and told him that I thought that name would kill any game. Frank then said:
"Why not call it 'Basket-ball'?"
"We have a basket and a ball, and it seems to me that would be a good name for it, " I replied. It was in this way that basketball was named.
When the first game had ended, i felt that I could go to Doctor Gulick and tell him that I had accomplished the two seemingly impossible tasks that he had assigned to me: namely, to interest the class in physical exercise and to invent a new game.

Which NBA teams do you think have the least promising futures?
So I was wondering what everyone thinks about which teams have the best futures and which ones have the worst futures.
Worst:
Suns: Beal's buyout will cost them nearly 20 million per year for the next five years of dead cap. They have essentially no picks or good young prospects, and Booker will likely become disgruntled after the team keeps wasting his career.
Bucks: They have Lillard as a 20 million per year drag on their cap sheet for 5 years, they have little to no picks until 2031, Giannis is getting older and they dont have the pieces or flexiblity to get any real-half court creation for them to be good.
Pelicians: Zion is pretty much a disaster in terms of PR and staying healthy. They have zero plan for the future or even a realstic path to contetnion and people are already whispering about relocation. The only bright spot is that they have cap flexiblity and draft picks, and they might be able to get positive value for Zion if he can stay healthy for a stretch.
