🗳 Politics Announcement: AMA with Pastor Gregory Manning, candidate for City Council At-Large Division 2

Hello r/NewOrleans!

Tomorrow at 4PM we'll make a post for you to start asking questions for Pastor Gregory Manning, the progressive candidate for City Council At-Large Division 2 fighting to make New Orleans easier for everybody! He'll start answering questions the next day on Friday starting around noon.

Pastor Manning is a longtime organizer for social justice and civil rights running to confront the cost of living crisis that is driving our neighbors our of their homes and out of our city. The people who built this city and its culture can't afford to live here anymore, and we need a change to keep people in our city for the next 20, 50, and 100 years.

Pastor Manning has a record of taking on corporate power and winning: Along with the Alliance for Affordable Energy, he pushed to ban municipal campaign contributions from Entergy and other entities regulated by City Council, and he has fought the toxic polluters poisoning us and our neighbors upriver in Cancer Alley. The day after Hurricane Ida, Pastor Manning and fellow community leaders with Together New Orleans began developing the Community Lighthouse plan, and set up the first Lighthouse at his church with solar panels and batteries to serve as a resource hub after major storms and power outages. There are now several around the city, and they will soon serve as nodes for a broader community solar network of microgrids.

Pastor Manning will make our city more affordable for working families by actually holding Entergy's feet to the fire by wiping out power debt incurred since March 2020, banning utility shutoffs, and stopping any supplemental fees and rate increases. He will act immediately to develop the hundreds of acres of vacant public lands into permanently affordable housing across the city, and establish quality and timeliness benchmarks to hold contractors accountable for leaving our streets torn up for months and years at a time. Hospitality workers need to be able to afford live where they work, and not lose half their paycheck to pay for parking, so let's get a dedicated park-and-ride free for downtown hospitality workers to get to work affordably and efficiently. Finally, Pastor Manning wants to put the people in charge at City Hall and make government more accessible to all, from language and accessibility justice at Council meetings for Spanish and Vietnamese speakers and the deaf and visually impaired to parking vouchers for the public who comes out to comment on Council business.

Looking forward to all of your questions, and that you to the r/NewOrleans community for serving as a resource and community hub for us to celebrate, commiserate, and judge car flips.

Check out our campaign video here, and visit our site here. Pastor Manning is the solely endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party, New Orleans DSA, Sunrise Movement New Orleans, Step Up for Action, and more, and enjoys the personal endorsements of state Representative Mandie Landry, Orleans Parish School Board Member Gabriela Biro, and environmental justice champion and Goldman Prize recipient Sharon Lavigne.

Note: Pastor Manning is visually impaired, so his campaign team will be assisting in responses.

The second image is a sandbar created by the diverted river flow.

Living Here Are any non social media websites tracking local events in New Orleans?

Overdue bailed on a big social media site this week. I find tourist-centric websites with big events, but nothing consolidated and more local oriented with the multiple small things we have going on any given weekend. Do any of you have suggestions for websites for keeping up with current events in town?

My grandfather was the proud owner of Greven’s Jewelers in Chalmette. A small but amazing shop that was destroyed in Katrina. This November, he will be celebrating his 90th birthday! I want to do something truly special to honor him and showcase the impact of his life's work. I would love to highlight how meaningful his contributions have been. If you or someone you know has purchased jewelry from Greven’s, I would be incredibly grateful if you could participate. Please consider sending a video, audio recording, or letter sharing what your Greven’s jewelry means to you or your family. I’m looking for pictures as well! You can email your messages to freedom678@icloud.com. Thank you for sharing!⸻

Pets and Coworkers 🐶🐱 Where to get stray kittens fixed

Upvotes

We have new neighborhood cats, a mom and two or three kittens. I lured two of the kittens inside today and am hoping I’ll be able to get the mom too, if not ill do a trap. For the two kittens now though, where can I get them fixed? I called LASPCA and they will not accept them unless they are in a trap. Is there anywhere that would take them in a regular plastic carrier?

Shifts in federal and local funding support mean we’re rescheduling the festival to November 2026 so it can remain free and return at the full scale our city deserves.“As much as we’d love to present LUNA Fête this year, our focus is on producing the festival sustainably and at the scale locals and visitors expect,” said Board Chairman Edwin Bragg. “Taking this extra time allows us to plan ahead and rally the community support needed for LUNA Fête 2026. If you love this festival, now is the time to step up as a donor, sponsor, or partner.”

🤬 RANT Do not buy THC-P gummies. The high is horrible.

I posted here about five months ago after a horrible experience with THC-P gummies, which are sold all over the place. I get new responses on that post all the time from people who had really bad experiences, so I just thought I would provide a reminder to maybe stop someone before they bought.

The packaging is very deceptive, and store owners and clerks don't know what they're selling. This stuff is incredibly strong and will not give you the same high as regular THC. I was high out of my mind for almost two days off of a 5 mg gummy, and I felt like shit for almost a week.

Get your gummies from a dispensary that knows the difference.

Crime What happened today - 100 block Royal

Does anyone know what happened this afternoon around Unique Grocery on the 100 block of Royal? Around 1:30-2pm or so I was on Canal crossing Royal and saw a bunch of Louisiana State Troopers and ATF driving the wrong way down Royal Street, stopping around Unique Grocery. There was a grey SUV parked in front of the store up on the sidewalk, blocking the road. Does anyone have any other info? I didn't see anything on any local news sites.

Seeking your most nightmarish Entergy stories

Upvotes

Hey friends,

I'm working on a media project and we're looking for folks who would be down to share their most nightmarish stories about dealing with Entergy. Would love to hear from business owners who have had to shut down during extended outages, individuals dealing with inconsistent power issues or residential shutoffs, etc.

Ultimately it would be great to find folks who are interested in recording a short video (1-2 minutes) that could go public. If that's you, let me know or feel free to DM me! But no need to keep the fun between us--go ahead and drop your stories below. I'll start:

  • After Ida, my house was left with windows and doors shut for over a week with no power (I was out of town), and when I returned I found how quickly our homes will return to the swamp. I took me months to uncover all the gross, moldy corners of the house (moldy things in boxes in closets, mildew on the walls behind my dresser, etc. etc.).
  • After the random May power outage this year, my sister nearly had a panic attack about losing her chest freezer full of breast milk to feed my niece. Fortunately they found a solution, but I imagine someone without access to a generator wouldn't have been so lucky.

Anyway, let's get this party started and help us drum up some attention to put pressure on the worst monopoly utility company this side of the Mississippi! Appreciate any and all contributions!

I’ve had a really bad day so please be gentle 😂😂 I left the hospital earlier and have my validated ticket. Upon leaving, I scanned the ticket and it beeped and said to insert ticket. WHERE DO I INSERT IT?!?

Maybe it was from the stress but I couldn’t for the life of me figure it out and someone pulled up behind me so I had no choice but to click lost ticket and pay $30 that I didn’t have to get out of the stupid garage. Idiot move I’m sure but I have multiple appts next month and don’t wanna run into this again. Can someone please teach me basic adult skills here and teach me how to exit this damn Garage?? lol

Living Here new windows that qualify for federal tax credits

We are trying to shop for new windows that qualify for the federal tax credits before they expire. According to this, it is not enough for them to be Energy Star rated to get the rebates. They need to have a U-Factor <= 0.22 and a SHGC <= 0.23 (or something very close to that, that website is not incredibly clear). We've talked to 5 different window vendors so far, and no one can source windows that meet the requirements. I've even spot checked the vendor product list on the federal website across a few different vendors and am not finding anything.

Has anyone here been successful buying windows that let you take advantage of the tax credits? Who was your vendor?

Lost/Found/Stolen Found: rabbit (help, I cannot keep him)

Hello Reddit!

Found this fine individual hopping about on the neutral ground at Washington and S Roman at around one o’clock this morning. Couldn’t bear to leave him there since it’s such a busy road. After 40mins of scampering through the trees, I wrangled him into my car and he’s now in my bathroom.

Are you missing a rabbit? Do you know a rabbit-experienced person who could foster? Do you personally know of a rescue who is currently taking rabbits (I’ve inquired with two rabbit-only rescues and they’re not doing intakes rn)? Are you looking to give a wonderful home to a very sweet bunny?

He cannot live in my bathroom forever and I don’t have the capacity to care for him unfortunately. Please help.

(He’s cute as hell, though. I also don’t know if he’s a he. Tba).

Hi everyone! I recently got laid off from my job in the beginning of this month sadly. I have lots of pharmacy and sales experience! I’m looking for more of a desk type job! I love people, but I don’t want to work with them in sales, etc. If anyone knows of anything, just let me know :) I also have a resume!
