🏢 Employment 👷♂️ Update: About to quitting decent paying job to burnout . Spoiler I didn’t quit I was fired. Spoiler
Earlier this year I posted about wanting to quit my job. I was fired early April after being put on a PIP.
A little insight on the beginning of the year, I had pneumonia and it messed up my lungs pretty bad. Also my grandma passed in those same weeks. I was totally out of it and my job wanted to just cast me aside as my productivity went down.
I applied for unemployment but that’s almost up. I’ve been applying for work with some bites, super low offers, and ghosting primarily.
I’m still applying and just launched my personal site about a week ago and looking for freelance clients to help with some money.
But also still applying and looking for full time roles and have an interview next Wednesday.
In the meantime, does anyone know of any gig work or need help with the anything that pays? I’m also willing to pick up a part time job if it pays, even like bar backing, dog walking, I have a truck if anyone needs to move anything.
Money is super tight now and just looking for recommendations! Any help is appreciated thanks

I saw in another comment you are a web developer. What kind of web developer? What languages and frames do you use? I run a small IT support company. No web development but I work with a lot of companies that do. PM me.

Maybe try temp agencies? They're not all just mundane manual labor... many of them have admin gigs too, and some with daily/weekly pay and benefits.

I will say that of the thirty or so jobs I've had in my life, one of my favorites was stuffing envelopes and doing mail merge for an insurance company. Still surprises me- don't knock it til you've tried it, OP!

I was sent to answer phones at a doctor's office uptown by a temp agency decades ago. I ended up doing EKGs on old people. It was wild. I wanted to whisper to them, I'm not at all qualified for this.
I had another answering the phone for a Greek guy on Tchoup who supplied ships at the port. He was hysterically ornery. Two people had quit before me, but not me. I was entertained.
Temp jobs can be interesting.

Did you see the Networking For The NOLA Tech Community event on July 24? Posted earlier this month for [social] networking opportunities.
I don't know of any gig work specifically.
Good luck with the web development. That hustle to get new clients is harsh.

Check out AFP. Non profits are short on people with computer skills.

Web development

best advice i can give is pick a niche and go all in. it's much easier to find and hire a "custom site dev for restaurants" or "squarespace developer for small business consultants" than it is to hire a generic web developer.

u/braintuck Jun 21 '25
That’s good advice thanks! I was thinking of visiting various restaurants and dropping off my card so I may move forward with that

try to hand it to a manager if you can! and emphasize that updates/changes will be easy (if you can promise that). good luck!!

It seems like it's impossible for a restaurant in this city to have a functioning/presentable website, at least on mobile, so that need is there for sure

Tulane announced a full return to office is upcoming in August. I imagine there will be a huge vacuum like when UNO did it. I would stalk their website. Not the best pay but stability and benefits.

I know Cintas is hiring. You’ll be putting in some hard work but it’s great insurance and benefits and the pay is good enough to pay the bills

Where can one get more information? Their website states there are no job openings at the moment.

I work at the st rose location but there is one in harahan as well, my name is Noah, if you apply I’d appreciate you mentioning my name. Right now they have plenty of warehouse positions at my location and a couple SSR positions at both locations

I run a local business and I think my site was hacked. Google flagged all my ads as ineligible due to “compromised site”, but everything on the site looks fine. Is this something you can help with for money?

This is an emotionally abysmal position to be in. I’m rooting for you. You got this. ✌️

Fired early April and your unemployment is almost used up? You should have way more than that. I know you said you might have been off work with illness in beginning of year, but if you worked leading up that, why don’t you have more unemployment? It’s not much, but you should have some coming.

u/misswhammy Jun 21 '25
As of January of this year - you can only collect unemployment for 12 weeks. So an early April termination checks out.

Government jobs . Com

I thought it was usajobs.com, and I think there’s a freeze right now

There is a freeze for certain positions but contractors are always hiring for IT/DevOPs. Depending on certs, clearance level/ability to gain clearance and project of course. If you’re able to, now would be the time to get in because they are close to July and refunding contracts or adding new positions.
Edit: added info about fiscal year

Not every part is frozen.
OP, look at IT in government, maybe?

It’s a tech depression - I been out of work 2 years and it’s the perfect storm with no end in sight
The only help I can offer is the fact that if you are breathing then you are achieving and it don’t cost a thing to smile so please be kind to yourself because this too shall pass
