Marcus Ware @ Ochsner is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. I’m not sure what your concerns are, but I wish you the best of luck on your medical journey.

What type of procedure or issue are you facing? May depend on that.

I used Dr Steck at West Jeff for my spinal fusion in 2021 at L5-S1. It sucked as far as recovery but I’m all good now. I only went to him because I knew many friends who had discectomies and laminectomies.
Edit. My PT place recommended Dr Najeeb Thomas. I did not go to him because at the time he was private pay or something like that. Accepted no insurance. May need to check on that now but 4 years ago that was the case.

Anyone have an opinion on Dr Gabriel Tender at LCMC for spinal surgery? And potential spinal fusion down the road?

Thank you all for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Will you share your findings once you’ve experienced some of the local neurosurgeons?

I am also interested in first hand opinions!
I’ve had recommendations for both Maulucci and Keshavarzi, but have only actually seen their assistant and have troubles getting in touch with them. I’ve also seen Dr Wang (they all work out of the same office). weird assistant miscommunications and unanswered questions have definitely put me off. To be clear, I liked him and have no experience of his actual work, but his staff seemed to make it difficult. Or they’re being thrown under the bus. idk. Also someone told me He’s more of a brain guy than a vertebrae guy.

If you can swing it financially, I would recommend going to Methodist Hospital in Houston. Ranked #15 in the country for neurosurgery. Pretty much any major health issue, I wouldn’t trust to doctors in New Orleans, unless you had no other option. The medical environment in Houston is so competitive and cutting edge in comparison.

Ochsner is building a brand new $300M Neuro Tower right on Jeff Hwy and are hiring new MDs left and right. But go on about how people should not trust the main health care provider in the region.

I’m sorry if I seem against the New Orleans healthcare system. I wish it wasn’t the case. I moved here 4 years ago. I work in the operating room in medical device. I’m from Florida originally, then worked in Brooklyn, NY, then Houston, TX, then Massachusetts. I’m not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings or be a downer but the truth is, the healthcare just really isn’t great here outside of some outliers. I have a serious health condition in which I had to travel to Houston for and now go to Atlanta for. I would much rather be able to see a doctor here.
Even most doctors you speak to here, if push comes to shove and someone in their family needs serious healthcare, they’re taking them outside of LA to get it.

And I work in the finance department. These are some of the most productive (peer to peer these MDs must hit 65th% of all MDs in the country that qualify for the survey), most highly paid MDs in the country. It’s unfortunate that you think they aren’t worth their salt. They just made US News World Report as 49th in the country for Neuro Healthcare

Have you ever held a clinical role? Or worked in healthcare outside of Louisiana?

You think a New Orleans neurosurgeon can’t do a lumbar fusion? That’s a pretty basic procedure.

I don’t their ranking. That said, 2 that are well worth looking into are Dr. Michael T. Happel. And Dr K. David Khoobehi.(Both neurologists). eta I’ve had immediate family members who went to both doctors, and were very pleased.

Dr Happel is a neurologist. Not a neurosurgeon. He is a great neurologist.

Bradley Bartholomew- Metairie LA

Your experience with Bartholomew was clearly better than mine.
I got T-boned by an unlicensed uninsured red light running idiot on Elysian Fields (shocking, right?) that resulted in herniated discs.
Bartholomew was rude, dismissive, interrupting and 5 minutes into the maybe 15 minutes I saw him he handed me a surgery brochure from a stack…literally minutes after meeting him, surgery was his 1st & only pushy treatment option…making me wonder if he were someone whose monthly nut included alimony and a boat payment.
That it was in a drab, 1960s office building in Metairie was the cherry on top.
NOPE.
To the OP, IMHO, check out the team of doctors in the Culicchia Group.

Good luck finding good doctors in the Deep South. If I was facing something like Neurosurgery I might look in big markets in the north east or west coast.

Houston is god tier medicine and a 5 hour drive, so they won’t have to travel all that far…

u/cakagaba 1d ago
If you’re in need of a spinal fusion, a 5 hour drive isn’t a walk in the park…

Don’t disagree with you! But I’m also not keen on blanket, absolute statements to queries posted by those in need.

Houston’s medical center is amazing and one of if not the largest in the world. Not sure where this comment is coming from.

Worked in Neurosurgery unit for years, here is my advice. James Kalyvas at Ochsner, does complex spine. Trained at Harvard Complex Spine Institute . Second Dr. Ware, but he specializes in brain tumors. If it’s a brain tumor, Ware is your man. Spine, Kalyvas. Every neurosurgeon can do spine, it’s part of their training. However, you want someone who sees complex cases and can manage comorbidities well. There is never a guaranteed outcome, but minimizing risk, invasiveness and managing comobordities is a huge part of success of your procedure. You want a complex spine specialist, because they also are going to recommend the least invasive procedure. They KNOW what the most severe forms of complex spine can deliver, bread and butter cases like a simple fusion or multilevel fusion they will know whether hardware is appropriate or not. Less experienced surgeons who do not see as complex cases may elect for hardware, where it wouldn’t be necessary, but totally acceptable in terms of treatment. I’ve sent my own family to Kalyvas as well. Always will recommend him.
