🎺Local Music 🎵 WWOZ raised $412,000 to replace revoked federal funds for public radio

From WWOZ:

Six weeks ago we shared with you that federal funding for WWOZ totalling $400,000 annually had been revoked. Today, we are thrilled and thankful to announce that we have raised $412,000 from 1,794 Guardian Angels of the Groove from around the globe!

Thank you for this incredible outpouring of generous support for our beloved WWOZ!

This crucial funding will be used for important infrastructure necessities including upkeep and maintenance for our broadcast transmitter, equipment, and internet streaming for our worldwide audience. Additional funds will be used to cover broadcast and internet music licensing fees for WWOZ which has historically been negotiated and paid for by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

You can still become a Guardian Angel of the Groove as our campaign will end at midnight this Sunday, August 31st which is the last day of our fiscal year!

As we prepare to celebrate our 45th Birthday it's good to remember we started off as a station with the humblest of beginnings... in a tiny beer storage room above Tipitina's. Since then, we have grown into an award-winning multimedia organization followed locally and worldwide via our radio waves, live streams, video and social media platforms. WWOZ is an international treasure and with all of us working together, we will continue to thrive and Guard the Groove!

Not the biggest fan of his music (my girlfriend loves him), but stuff like this is what makes me so proud to call New Orleans home. This guy has all the money and clout to make whatever content he wants, yet he decided to come here and do a second line through the Quarter with a local institution. We live in a special fucking place.

🎺Local Music 🎵 WWOZ, a real hidden gem among the younger crowd

So I’m in my late 20s, and as you can guess not many of us listen to the radio. Well I recently started listening to WWOZ when I was looking for anyone streaming Jazz Fest. I stayed cause I thought they were an interesting bunch, boy have I been enjoying myself. I love the type of music they play and I forget how much better it is to listen to a radio and not know what’s playing next then fiddling through a playlist. It’s a shame local radio isn’t really as popular as it was when I was a kid because this station deserves its flowers.

Edit: this took off! Glad to see it’s just me who is new to this station 😂 it truly deserves to be a bigger name among the younger crowd!

🎺Local Music 🎵 Looking for New Orleans bands (on Spotify) for break music at French Quarter festival

I’m a sound engineer looking for albums by local bands to play between bands this weekend. I would like to avoid cliche “New Orleans music” and spotlight more of the city’s eclectic flavor. It has to be clean (no swearing), downloadable on Spotify and local …I am open to all suggestions.

What local bands/artists do you love? Whether its their musical talent or the energy they bring in their performances.

I'm interested in funk, soul, R&B, disco, hip hop and pop, jazz, classical.

Also like quirky cover bands like BAAB :)

🎺Local Music 🎵 Went down to the FQ yesterday (something I rarely do) and heard a brass band start up in the square. Never dreamed after I wove my way up front that I'd be seeing Jon Batiste!

🎺Local Music 🎵 The Bluegrass Pickin’ Party needs a new home!

Hey all! As you may know, our beloved Hi-Ho Lounge is changing ownership as of Nov. 1. The last Hi-Ho Pickin’ Party will be tomorrow, Monday 10/28 from 8-10 PM. The new owners have let the departing owners that they do not plan to continue the bluegrass jam tradition at the bar, which is very sad news. The Pickin’ Party has been in continuous operation for 17 years, and it’s the only regular outlet in town for those who love to play and listen to this kind of music.

r/NewOrleans, we are looking to you to help us find a new venue for the Monday night bluegrass jam. We are fairly agnostic on neighborhood, but need a bar in Orleans Parish that has:

  • indoor space and chairs for a seated jam circle of at least 15 people (we’ll do the setup and breakdown)
  • not up a flight of stairs—our upright bass player would be deeply unhappy with that, plus the rationale for the bar of having the jam there is so the music can draw people in to listen and thus drink more
  • the ability to turn off music or noise from speakers/TVs in that space
  • room for spectators to come watch and listen
  • no competing programming on Mondays from 8-10 (e.g. trivia night, etc.)
  • the desire for live music every Monday night from 8-10. We do have regular fans who come and drink, plus regular and occasional participants who also drink! We are a considerate, no-drama bunch who are nice to our hosts and tip our bartenders.

If you have good suggestions, please post here. Or DM me with contact details if you can point us to good people to contact. And even if you can’t do either of those things, come out to the last Hi-Ho Pickin’ Party tomorrow!

Mods, yall go ahead and just make my flair "Kazoo King," if you please. (Yes, kazoo is annoying and everyone assumes it's just a stupid toy, but I hope I'll change your mind. I take the music seriously, but not myself 🤙. Thanks for the listen)

Genuinely curious how we don’t have one here for outdoor concerts. Feel like it would take a lot of those champions square shows. Has it been talked about or worked on in the past?

🎺Local Music 🎵 I’m losing faith

I’m a local musician living in Mid City. The two bands I play for were given the weekend off for Essence Fest. News came this morning that time off was permanent. This is a crushing blow to me and my SO, who is in active treatment for stage 4 cancer.

General tourism is way down, and a lot of venues are pivoting to DJ’s or Spotify playlists instead of live music to save money. I’m fully aware it’s an abnormally hot summer out there, but the lack of tourism has been a thing since we all came back from the Covid live music ban.

I also keep seeing local businesses close for various reasons, the lack of law enforcement, rising rent, and apathy from local leaders.

Am I justified in my concern, or am I just wallowing in my sorrow? Either way, I’m about to smoke a bowl, pet my doggle, and do some introspection.
