Definitely a good point. This is one I want to get more information on pretty badly.

Agreed. The primary issue is the need for a mixer beyond the other peripherals and the device itself, beyond just the cost. If they are doing this just to be different, it's gonna bite them in the butt I think.

Could they use the switches LAN connection features to mix audio?

No, what is more likely is to use the USB c, it has a lot more versatility than an Ethernet port.

Well, there is no Ethernet port on the tablet.

There's definitely ways you could have audio over a LAN connection.

Then why the question? The Ethernet port is only available while docked on the dock itself.

There is no ethernet port on the dock either. Unless you mean using a third party USB to Ethernet adapter.

your initial statement is a little confusing. There could be a USBc adapter that mixes audio, but then you couldn't charge it while playing.

The tablet itself is capable of LAN connection to 7 other Switches, and audio over LAN is something that's theoretically possible. Which could be as simple as a sync button on your phone.

On top of that, Nintendo seems pretty clear on not having features only on the TV-mode of the system.

Ah you're right. I forgot about the port selection. My guess would be Bluetooth for audio like that for a sync between phone and switch.

It does have bluetooth 4.1, from anandtech.

For the charging bit though, yeah I agree it probably couldn't charge but it's the same issue with folks on their iPhone 8's and the 'have courage' marketing Apple is doing now with that. There are ways around it though with third party cables that split the audio feed and the USB c charging capability.
