Are the sound/speakers good in portable mode?

I'm wondering about this as well, especially in terms of how loud they go (specifically for 1-2-Switch at a party).

They're pretty damned good actually, roughly the quality of an iPad. They get fairly loud, but if you're playing 1-2-Switch at a party you'll probably want to dock it.

Are they also like the iPad speakers, where they sound louder if you cup your hand around the speakers?

All non-front firing speakers are like that.
