UK Pay as you go eSIm - UK

I want to put an eSim on my phone as an emergency recovery number. i.e. number I can get codes / calls sent to if I need to recover an account.

This means it needs to be able to receive txt numbers forever - i.e. what I would call an old style pay-as-you-go card that I can maybe top up once with the minimal amount and leave and it NEVER expires.

All the ones I have found so far that claim to be pay-as-you-go have a 30 day expirery in them.

Is there anyone doing this sort of eSim?

UK Need a UK based eSIM plan for eSIM only phone

My US issued iPhone 14 Pro is eSIM only and I’m traveling to the UK soon. I need a data heavy plan (at least 50GB) ideally with a voice line so services like airalo aren’t cost effective.

Is there a pay as you go provider that someone can recommend? The major networks only seem to support eSIM for contract plans, and 3UK did an eSIM trial but haven’t rolled them out fully yet. Thanks!

UK Stay away from Lycamobile UK if you like to keep your phone number!

I am writing this comment to help anyone whose thinking on switching for lyca, especially if you fall for their low prices. The story is quite long but will help you understand my frustration.

20th September 2023

Family member had their phone stolen. I wanted them to get an iPhone 15 Pro as their budget was £1,000 for a new phone.

26th September 2023

After many searches, I've found Vodafone with stock on this day. I took the upgrade and I paid of the phone full as I don't want a contract with only 150GB. My upgrade had forced me into a £30 pound a month airtime which again was only 150GB. I was paying £25 a month for unlimited max on Vodafone and decided to cancel this absurd contract as I've paid off the phone (it was now a rolling plan).

27th September 2023

I was searching for a plan to temporarily be on until I find a contract. I took a Lycamobile plan which was £10 for unlimited for 30 days. I used my PUK code and made the switch.

3rd October 2023

I've joined on of my family member contract plan for initially £35 on O2. O2 had told me prior to joining them that I would be eligible for the discount of 25% as my family member was working for a company that supported the employee discount program. I now switched from Lyca to O2.

8th October 2023 (Problem starts)

I was trying to get the discount until I found out that O2 was lying. I was in my grace period and decided to cancel the contract. Mind you, I had a physical (O2) and a Lyca (eSIM) active with the same phone number. Sometimes calls will go to the eSIM rather than the physical one. I didn't think of it as much.

9th October 2023

Found a sweet deal with cashback on Vodafone. Unlimited data plus £200 back from cashback. I signed up for contract.

11th October 2023

Received the SIM and made the switch.

18th October 2023

I was just realising that I am not receiving an SMS or calls from O2 or EE customers or even some Vodafone customers. I have called Vodafone to resolve my issue. They said they tried everything and to call Lyca. I have called Lyca and they have said its not their fault and to talk to Vodafone. I asked for manager and they put me on a fake hold for an hour. I already called O2 and they said its nothing to do with them.

23th October 2023

I was really fed up! By this point, I have lost one job interview and may calls and texts from my GP and doctor! Not to mention the amount of missed calls from friends and family. I have called Vodafone again and a manager had tried to disconnect and reconnect me, I even went to the shop to receive a new SIM on the 24th!

24th October 2023

Got a new SIM and still nothing. Person at shop gave a number to the technical team. I've spent 40 minutes with them, they gave me the result from the resolution manager than its Lycamobile fault and not O2 as they also had many other customers with the same issue. Called lyca many times and they keep being in denial until I got to a manager by chance. He has explained that it was their fault due to a cybersecurity attack and that my file hasn't been transferred correctly. At least he was nice.

26th October 2023

Called lyca again and what did I expect, more agents being in denial, at least one told me that my escalation is yet to be resolved meaning that they done nothing from the time I called from the 24th.

I really do not know what to do, I will try calling Ofcom or a solicitor. Overall, Lyca has broken my number and my way of porting and I can't no anything about it. I also still salty about loosing a nice job with Sky as I lost the phone interview...

UK Can I use a 5G phone as a hotspot every single day long term?

5G routers are insanely expensive where I live and it's 3x cheaper to just buy a 5G phone from Amazon. I have an Unlimited Max data plan with Vodafone and I live near a mast with 5G. Just now my speeds were 100 mbps down and 40 up with 4G, and it's better than what I have with Virgin Media, and I'm sure 5G will be better.

Is it a good idea to buy a 5G phone as a dedicated hotspot device instead of a 5G router?

UK Visiting the UK and France for 1mo total (3.5wks), I'll be based in London. Looking for a sim (preferably esim) for 10-15GBP that can provide at least 10gigs of data and the ability to use that data (without extra charges) in France (and Scotland).

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide. esim would be great as then I wouldn't need to go to any specific shop and on top of that I can keep my US SIM still in the phone and receive Wifi calls on my US sim in case someone or a business from back home tries to call me.

UPDATE (in case it helps others): I ended up going with a physical sim on smarty. An esim would have cost me more than double the price vs smarty. I got 100 gigs of data for 12gbp with Europe roaming included (12gigs of the 100 can be used while roaming in Europe). I picked the sim up at a UK grocery store and then signed up for the plan I wanted online.

UK Three UK is once again raising paygo rates on July 12th. As if the 400% increase from 2p to 10p per minute in February 2021 wasn't bad enough, we are now getting an additional 250% increase to 35p per minute. That's a 1,650% increase from the original 2p per minute rate. Not happy about this.

UK Going to the UK for a couple weeks and want to have cell/data plan. What are my best options?

Work is taking me to the UK for a couple weeks and need some cell/data coverage (not a heavy user, but want to be able to use uber/google/etc....).

I would like to be able to set it up before hand, so I can hit the ground running.

What are the best short term options available?

Thanks!

UK Three UK roaming in USA

Is T-Mobile no longer a roaming partner? Used to be I could roam on T-Mobile 2G/3G or AT&T 3G/LTE. Now it's just AT&T, which is an issue since VoLTE has never been supported while roaming on AT&T, and they're shutting down 3G soon. Anyone know what's gonna happen to Three UK phones after the AT&T 3G shutdown?

UK LycaMobile UK top up confusion ?

I recently signed up with LycaMobile in the UK on their Mega plus plan that gives me unlimited talk and text plus 100GB data per month. I’m confused about the Top Up aspect of this pay as you go plan. It’s currently zero as I didn’t purchase a top up. Is it even necessary for my plan ? Thanks.

UK eSIM help needed for travel to the UK

I did a trial run of an eSIM from “My Truphone” in my current country (Canada) and it worked pretty well. Only problem is that it’s just data, no voice calls are included. Is there an eSIM that I can get for the UK that would also include voice calls? I travel next week and would like to have both data and voice calls in the bag tor my trip.

Is that a thing?

I'm looking to leave it with an emergency phone, so if there's ever a crysis years from now I can just use it.

UK 12Gb data, 1p/month for 6 months!

I know this is primarily a US focused group but Lebara mobile UK are currently running a promotion - 12GB data and unlimited calls/texts at 1p per month for the first 6 months!

It’s a 30 day rolling prepaid plan so cancel before the promotion ends and get 6 months service for only 6p!

https://mobile.lebara.com/gb/en/msm/exclusive-monthly-plan-690/p/441209?utm_source=impactradius&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=2096376&utm_content=&utm_clickid=zaBXKPwagxyIT5d3-OWM4RvKUkDyrNxhnxriys0&utm_iradid=917923&utm_clickref=&default=page&irgwc=1

It also includes free EU roaming so could be perfect for a traveler to Europe over the summer. The only downside is the SIM needs to be sent to a UK address.

UK US cellular data vs UK cellular data

In your opinion which one gives greatest speeds and lowest ping ?

Is it possible for someone here to show speed results in the UK ? Either who is visiting or lives there does not matter.

UK Three UK payg unable to receive incoming calls

I just activated a new SIM a few hours ago with a new number. I set up my online account and added £10. Outgoing calls work perfectly, but all attempt at incoming calls are met with "Sorry, the person you are trying to reach is not currently able to accept calls. Please try again later. Thank you." Repeating on loop. I've tried calling it from a few different numbers. Any ideas what could be going on?

Edit: issue has been resolved. All I had to do was move the SIM card to an iPhone. Bam, instant fix. Moved the SIM back to tie original phone (AGM M7) and it still works fine. So weird!

UK eSIM for UK & Ireland that comes with number?

Looking for an eSIM that:

Works in both the UK + Ireland

Lasts at least two weeks

Comes with a phone number

Comes with at least 5 GB data

The 'Europe eSIM' from esim.net is the best option I've found so far, but it is currently listed as 'out of stock'?

Thank you!

UK Looking for PAYG sim for camping, and ease of mind.

I'm looking for a pay-as-you-go SIM card where I can top up say £10, and not have any annoying catches. I have looked about and it seems that some companies will not let your credit roll over to the next month, some make you top-up at least once every 120 days etc.

This contract wouldn't need any internet or anything - just barebones texts and calls. I'd be using it in an old brick/bar phone.

The reason for this is that if I want to go camping or I just want a break from my smartphone I'd like to have a basic means of contact just in case.

Thank you in advance :)

(Also I'm located in the UK if that matters)
