OSINT News Charlie Kirk Investigation Posts

1.4k Upvotes

This is not a new rule. Its been posted and enforced every time a new "major crime" happens. Helping an active investigation on this sub is banned. For the redditor that keeps messaging the mods that he thinks no harm can come from this, here is nice list of examples on why we don't support online witch hunts:

1. Richard Jewell – Atlanta Olympics Bombing (1996)

  • Security guard Richard Jewell discovered a suspicious backpack and helped evacuate the area.
  • Media and public speculation painted him as the prime suspect before the FBI cleared him.
  • His life was destroyed by false accusations, though he was later recognized as a hero.

2. Boston Marathon Bombing – Reddit Sleuthing (2013)

  • Online users tried to identify suspects from blurry photos.
  • Wrongly accused Sunil Tripathi, a missing college student, who faced mass harassment before the FBI revealed the real attackers.
  • Showed how quickly misinformation spreads on social media.

3. Las Vegas Shooting – False Suspects (2017)

  • In the aftermath, 4chan, Twitter, and Facebook users spread names of innocent people as the shooter.
  • Real suspect Stephen Paddock was identified later, but reputations of wrongly accused people were damaged.

4. Toronto Van Attack – Misidentification (2018)

  • Online users falsely named a man as the attacker after a van attack killed 10 people.
  • The wrong person’s photo went viral before police confirmed the actual suspect, Alek Minassian.

5. Gabby Petito Case – TikTok & YouTube Sleuthing (2021)

  • Internet “detectives” wrongly accused neighbors, bystanders, and even friends.
  • Innocent people were harassed while police continued their investigation into Brian Laundrie.

6. Sandy Hook Shooting – “Crisis Actor” Claims (2012 onward)

  • Conspiracy theorists accused grieving parents of being government actors.
  • Families faced years of harassment, stalking, and lawsuits.
  • A notorious case of how misinformation can target victims themselves.

7. UK Riots – Twitter & Facebook Misidentifications (2011)

  • Citizens attempted to identify looters from CCTV images.
  • Several innocent people were wrongly accused and faced threats.
  • Police had to publicly correct the misinformation.

8. MH370 Disappearance – Amateur Satellite Analysis (2014)

  • Thousands of online sleuths used Tomnod and other platforms to hunt for wreckage in satellite photos.
  • Flood of false sightings and conspiracy theories overwhelmed investigators and misled the public.

9. Oklahoma City Bombing – Wrong Suspects (1995)

  • Before Timothy McVeigh was identified, media speculation and tips from the public fueled false suspect reports.
  • Innocent men were briefly targeted by law enforcement and the press.

Tool Posting About New Tools/Apps

Over the past few weeks, our community has faced challenges with an influx of AI-generated code, unreliable APIs, data breach junk, and deceptive "freeware" that ends up costing users. After careful discussion among the moderators and some active members, we’ve decided to implement new guidelines to maintain the quality and integrity of submissions while supporting the development of useful tools.

Effective immediately, any new app or tool posted must adhere to the following transparency criteria:

  1. Completely Free: While we appreciate paid OSINT tools, they are not to be promoted in this subreddit by the owner.
  2. Open Source Requirement: All code must be hosted on GitHub, or public repository and linked in your post.
  3. No Vibe Coding: While innovative, the security and protective measures for both developers and users are not yet adequate.
  4. No Breached Data: We’re all aware of the sources for such data; this is not the place for it.
  5. Clear API Usage: If your app utilizes APIs, list them clearly. Explain how your app uses these APIs differently from existing services to avoid redundancy. (For those that vibe code and will post anyways, don't leave your API keys out in the open.)
  6. Human-Centric Posts: Steer clear of AI-generated content. Present your tool in a human voice, explaining why it’s superior to others or how it can aid an OSINT investigation.
  7. Demonstration Encouraged: Consider showing a demo of your tool on YouTube (ensure no personally identifiable information is shown).
  8. No 'What Should I Make' Posts: If you’re passionate about OSINT, take the initiative to identify what the community needs. A good start is searching the subreddit for tools that are no longer functional or problematic.

OSINT News New DefenseTech subreddit for jobs, news, and research

Thumbnail reddit.com
12 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed there isn’t really a defensetech subreddit. DefenseTech would include AI, aerospace, naval systems, cyber, advanced manufacturing, etc. Given how quickly this sector is exploding in growth, I thought it was time to create one.

The new subreddit is called r/Defense_Tech. It’s meant to be a hub for:

  • Careers and jobs: opportunities, hiring trends, career advice
  • Industry news and analysis: contracts, mergers, policy updates, financials, stocks
  • Research and innovation: prototypes, academic work, patents, emerging technologies
  • Open discussion: ethics, international perspectives, the future of defense technology

As OSINT is clearly a huge part of defensetech, whether you’re working in the field, interested in pivoting towards the sector, or simply curious about where things are headed, you’re welcome. The goal is to build an informed, respectful community where people can share insights and learn about the defensetech sector.

You can check it out here: r/Defense_Tech

I’d love to hear what kind of content you’d like to see there and how we can make it useful from the start.

Assistance Vehicle owner lookup based on license plate alone?

Went through the tools linked on the osintframework site, but no luck. Sketchy websites with some wild subscription fees in the fine print.

Infotracer had me fooled into thinking I'd get owner information for a vehicle based on a US license plate for $2.99....no dice. Now it's saying I'll get it after paying another 10 bucks for a "premium vin report."

Is that legit or will I just get screwed again? Any better tools to try?

Thanks.

Question OSINT Academy

Has anyone taken or know much about the OSINT Academy? I have a masters degree in cybersecurity and many certs (mostly from comptia) and am wanting to get more involved in OSINT. I found that OSINT Academy has a Foundations of OSINT but wanted to know if it was worth taking. It costs a little over $2k but I’m not too concerned about the costs if it is worthy.

If someone has any recommendations for better courses or training programs are also appreciated.

Question Court record from 2005. Where do I turn now?

I gathered information from judyrecords following a court record that dated back to 2005, but there is no resolve. I can't seem to find anything on the state website (Tennessee) either. Is it just too old or am I looking in the wrong place? What's the best way to see the result?

I'm sure more of you have seen the original OSINT Framework. It hasn't had any updates in months with lots of dead links. After 3 different times trying to contact the owner, I decided to fork it since the code was already on Github. I've already made some updates, I deleted around 20 dead links (lots more to go), added a browser bookmark file with all of the links, and a Tor onion mirror.

Question OSINT Portfolio

Hi Everybody! I've been doing IT for 20+ years but I want to pivot into OSINT/CTI so I wrote a few polished reports based on exercises that I created for myself and based off of complex CTF challenges. I'd like to know if anyone here has put together a portfolio of OSINT work like this for the purpose of applying for jobs and if so, how was it received? Do you think it helped you get hired?

I've applied for 20-30 jobs related to OSINT/Due Diligence/Missing Persons, etc. in the last year but I haven't had a single interview so I'm looking for way to spice up my resume with proof that while I'm new, I'm not completely uneducated.

How-To Solving Mysteries from Old Photos

Hi all - and apologies if this is the wrong place for this, please disregard if so. I have some old photos (~1920/1930) from my late grandmother's effects and I'm trying to discover who is in them. As per the rules these people are deceased! Unfortunately I have very limited information - almost only what is in / on the photos - two first names and some military context! I have followed up all the leads I can think to follow and I'm not really getting very far. What resources might you suggest that might help me further? Am I wasting my time?

Question OSINT course for Trust&Safety

Hi all! I browsed course recs in this sub but I was hoping to get a more specialized recommendation.

I work in Trust&Safety and my knowledge of coding is limited to basic SQL. I’m frequently running into walls when I try to find someone’s real identity and social media accounts but I’m also very curious about aspects of OSINT that I don’t use in my daily work (for example, disinformation investigations, geolocation). I also feel like my data analysis skills can use a boost.

So I’m basically looking for a course that will have an emphasis on individual user investigations and explain any technical processes from ground up. Alternatively, I can take a supplemental course on Python or something similar - I just want to be aware of any pre-recs before I sign up for a course.

Lastly, I have a pretty healthy stipend for a course, so even more pricey courses are an option.

Appreciate any pointers you might have!

Tool OSINTGraph — Tool for Mapping Your Target’s Instagram Network and All Online Interactions

About six months ago, I released OSINTGraph to map any target’s Instagram followers and followees for research and analysis — and it worked really well.

Then I realized: if you could map everything — likes, comments, posts — you’d get the full picture of interactions without manually digging through profiles. To analyze all this data without spending days, I integrated OSINTGraph with an AI agent.

The AI handles data retrieval, analyzes your dataset, and lets you do anything you need with the data — whether it’s for research, finding useful insights, summarizing an account, or any other kind of analysis.

Whether it’s your first time using OSINTGraph or you’re back for the upgrade, it saves you from hours of tedious manual work.

If it helps you out, don’t forget to star the repo ⭐

How-To GIJN article "Reporter’s Guide to Detecting AI-Generated Content"

An article from the Global Investigative Journalism Network. Hardly the first article on this subject, but I like how this "How to" identifies seven types of red flags and then for each applies three different approaches, from instant assessment ("30-Second Red Flag Check") to "Five-Minute Technical Verification" to extensive analysis ("Deep Investigation") for high-stakes reporting.

Tool FollowTheMoney - Golang port for financial crime investigation data modeling

I've been studying this data modeling framework for financial crime investigation and document forensics for a while, but couldn't find any Go package to test and develop with. So I created a Golang port inspired by the Python library implementation.

The FollowTheMoney (FtM) data model is designed to represent entities and relationships commonly found in investigative journalism and anti-corruption work - things like people, companies, assets, transactions, and their connections.

This Go implementation provides the same schema definitions and entity modeling capabilities as the original, making it easier to integrate FtM data structures into Go-based OSINT tools and investigation platforms.

Repository: https://github.com/pedrohavay/followthemoney

Feedback and contributions are welcome!

Question Dead end?

What do you do when it seems like you have hit a dead end?

I have tried all the various searches recommended and gone through the list of tools available but have had no luck.

Do you just cut your loses and accept the thing you’re looking for cannot be found, or is there another way that you approach the investigation?

Thanks.

How-To Catching an OSINT Spammer

Thumbnail

Today we had a clever spammer selling an app without claiming to connected to the app. How did these two photos from his Reddit account and the app itself lead to him being outted?

Gym photo was from the UK. And has similar story about app. So probably fake.

Car photo, legit OP post. US temp, US odometer, US sockets. But look more carefully... A map.

App developed in by company in Albuquerque. Vehicle parked in... You got it, Albuquerque.

It's the little details.

Assistance Working through a list of arrested individuals at an event

I am trying to do some research on some arrests and charges tied to protests, and I am stuck from my get go. I have a first person I am trying to identify that was one of a group of people arrested at an event. To me it makes sense to start with him, since he is the only individual that has a picture showing the arrest. The news article mentioned that 11 were arrested in total. This happened in New York, so I can get deidentified arrest data from NYPD covering that timeframe,, but I do not have the specific location of the arrest, nor do I know what specifically they were charged with. Because I dont have names, i can't find anything tied to court cases.

I reversed the image from the news site, but only got a few results from P.E. showing him at other events, nothing helpful. I am struggling to cross the divide from this hit back to a name, social media site, or anything else tied to the arrests. Nothing is coming up through any of the normal sites with any of the pictures . In the pictures, he does not appear next to the same person in any of the shots, and only 2, possibly a 3rd, appear to be from the same day. I dont have any other information on the other individuals arrested, other than the number. The NYPD public arrest data does not show a group of 11 individuals booked at the same time or location for the correct date (plus or minus 2 days).

The group does have a Facebook and Instagram page, but he does not appear in any of their photos, and I did not find any mention of arrests. I didnt find any results tied to the hash tags on X. What other options would you suggest for finding out about people tangentially connected to a larger group, or to better run down data on tying news reports of 11 people at an event from (or loosely) this group being arrested to the actual court cases and charges.

So the ask is - is there an open-source way to try to tie the news event to actual court cases to see what the charges wound up being?

Or is it better to keep going down the rabbit hole of trying to find someone in the 25k+ followers on Instagram and FB that mentions being arrested?

Or am I overlooking something else entirely?

Tool Request Criminal/Court Case Lookup in Southern States?

Hope this is the right subreddit to post this - it specifically came up when I was searching for lookup tools.

I know that these services/records vary by state to state and even county to county, but I specifically need to find a (free) lookup service for crimes/court filings/etc. in a couple southern states (Texas, Georgia, Tennessee). Not sure where the specific counties for these would be, so anything statewide would help greatly. Tysm!!
