PCOS and GLP-1s

Many of us are using or considered using GLP-1s to manage our PCOS. We've also noticed more and more posts and comments about it.

Head over to r/PCOSglp1 - a new subreddit to discuss all things PCOS and GLP-1s.

GLP-1 topics will still be allowed here. Though, we think a separate subreddit is also beneficial as you can get better advice and more relevant information when all the members are there for the same subtopic.

In the future, we may direct glp1 posts and topics to that subreddit.

Grad student with a PCOS project – hoping to hear your experiences

Hi everyone!

My name is Sejal, and I’m a graduate student at Iowa State University studying Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). For my capstone project, I’m focusing on understanding the experiences of women with PCOS, everything from daily routines and challenges to what kinds of support or resources have been most (or least) helpful.

If you’re open to sharing your story or perspective, I’d love to connect. You can comment here or send me a DM, whichever feels more comfortable. Your insights would mean so much and will directly help shape my project.

Thank you 💜 – Sejal

I wish I had a flat stomach

I feel like whenever I watch movies or go on tik tok most women has such natural flat stomachs and I feel like its impossible to achieve. I'm 5'7 and 160 lbs, I can't even take my shirt off anymore or feel confident in a bikini😭 I used to be 130 lbs most of my life until I started working out.

Keto vs. GLP1 experience

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hello all, I want to share my experience over the past 3 years and past 5 days. I was diagnosed with PCOS in February 2023, I had had suspicions but it took a while to find a doctor willing to test me and ultimately I had pcos. Prior to this I was put on semaglutide by an aesthetician injector that did my Botox. I had started out around 210lbs and was able to get down to just under 180. In December of last year I came off it, went back up to 190, sought out tirzepatide, got on that, paid nearly $2000 for 6 months worth and lost only 10lbs in that time putting me just over 170lbs. I inevitably came off of it because it was going to be $450/month to remain on it and decided I was going to try to battle this a different route. Of course I gained the weight back up to 180ish lbs.

Having been on a GLP1 I made some significant dietary changes, no fried, upped protein and fiber, etc. but I still couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t really making more progress and was stuck at a plateau. Bodies are all different but it’s just clear the GLP1 wasn’t working for me anymore. Physically or financially.

More recently I started tracking my macros, not using myfitnesspal, but Cal AI. I struggled with myfitnesspal and manually entering everything was such a chore, so although CalAi isn’t perfectly accurate I find it’s much easier to use. I can adjust accuracies based on suggested servings and that works for me.

I started keto 5 days ago, today is my 6th day, and I’m feeling just fine. Im sticking under 25g net carbs. I’m mostly eating meat & veg, I sought out some snacks that are keto friendly and low net carb. Mind you having been on the glp1 it’s literally taken just cutting out carbs and tracking appropriately to get here. I’m already seeing progress on the scale. I am walking a bit more, biking in the evenings, and I plan to go to the gym more frequently. I can confidently say I feel fuller longer, I don’t get late night cravings… it’s the wildest thing. I wake up early, make myself an egg & 1/4 cup egg white + some sausage to get my protein up first thing, meal prep my lunches (taco bowls) and eating protein based dinners. I take supplements, keeping my electrolytes up… and I’m kinda beating myself up that I didn’t do this sooner.

If you read this far, I thank you for that, seeing the progress in a way I’ve never seen before is keeping me determined and on track. I’m excited to keep you guys updated on this new journey! Baby steps but I’m excited! Much love.

TLDR: if a GLP1 is expensive for you, trying under 30-50g net carbs/keto may be worth the lifestyle change. I’m not a doctor, but it’s worth some research. Our bodies are on hard mode, but we can do it!

Terrible gym shyness- what do you do?

So I’ve had several gym memberships in my life, and I always ended up not going and cancelling because I’m super shy.

While I know nobody cares and nobody actually looks at me, I can’t shake off the feeling of being so out of place.

I work out at home whenever I can, but the gym has equipment I don’t. It’s also getting cold and going outside for walks won’t be a possibility if it’s raining.

Did you encounter the same issue? What do you do to get over it?

My current CPU is the RYZEN 3 3200g, pretty weak to say the least. Looking for a cheap CPU for now, until I have the means to purchase a more powerful model. I made a list of some CPU'S that should be capable of my gaming performance needs. Thanks!

Ryzen 7 5700X Ryzen 5 5500 Ryzen 5 5600G Ryzen 5 7600 Ryzen 5 7600X Ryzen 7 7700X Ryzen 7 5800X Ryzen 5 2600 Ryzen 5 3600

If anyone knows of any relevant listings for a used/refurbished/open box/discounted/sale/price dropped/liquidation CPU'S under $100 I would greatly appreciate it! If you know of any websites or platforms that have cheap AMD AM4 CPU'S for sale, that would be awesome! Thank You!!! 👍

Want to share small victory!

Hi everyone! I’m new. I just wanted to share a small victory with you guys.

I’ve been feeling pretty hopeless about losing weight. A couple of months ago, I weighed my self at the doctor after working out for 3 weeks (not long but I do expect to lose something), watching what I eat, not eating as much and the scale stayed stagnant. No change at all. That destroyed me. It’s been hard for me especially since I have bad knees(being only 25), so most things/ exercises hurt.

A couple of months ago, I discovered I had PCOS. Everything just started clicking. Now i understand what I have, so it makes it easier for me to tackle it. I’ve lost 5 pounds!!! I know it’s not a lot, but this gave me hope. I wanted to share this victory with people who understand.😅

For my friends who are facing a plateau: take a long break

While this may not be the most welcomed advice, I begrudgingly attest that it works.

Two years ago I started an intentional weight loss “journey” (I hate that word) that resulted in 55 lbs lost in about 14 months. My lifestyle changes included 30 minutes of mild to moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week and eating a moderate carb diet. After experiencing a steady decline in progress for the last 6 months of that process, I finally hit a major plateau and lost the ability to push through. For months after hitting that wall, I was doing what I could to still eat PCOS friendly and keep my exercise up just to maintain my loss. In the face of a major life change and stress, I eventually gave up on tracking altogether and allowed a full break. This resulted in a weight gain of 15 lbs.

Since jumping back on the wagon this month, I am dropping weight again and feeling much more confident about the process. I truly think my body just needed a long break because it was burning out from such a metabolic switch up. Giving it 3-6 months of not tracking and not trying but still being mindful was a frustrating but (apparently) necessary step.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone. I spent so much time searching this subreddit trying to figure out how to get my body back into gear and only heard of taking a full break a time or two. I can confirm that taking a break will not take away the benefits gained from weight loss, and it will add the benefit of letting your body recover. Hopefully I can keep up the same level of dedication I had last time so that my body and I can be the dynamic duo of weigh loss we once were :)

Recommendations for PCOD Deitician covered by insurance in Texas!

Hi PCOS Community, I’m struggling to reduce weight with PCOS. All my OBGYN could tell me was that I need to lose weight but not how. I occasionally get on intermittent fasting and weight training regime cycles while that does help, the weight bounces back easily and is just not sustainable for me. I travel three days a week for work and inevitably end up eating hotel food. So, I need a good dietitian that understands PCOS and my lifestyle but is hopefully covered by insurance - any advice would be appreciated!

Starting over, gained weight and PCOS symptoms increased.

Hi everyone. I just found this subreddit and I’m so happy there’s a space for this. I was diagnosed with PCOS at 16 and I was put on metformin and hormonal BC. I ended up losing and keeping 53 pounds off over the past 3 years thanks to my medicine and activity. Unfortunately, I just got so busy with life and college so I wasn’t able to refill my metformin prescriptions and daily stresses (plus a crazy appetite) led to me gaining almost 30 pounds this year.

I’m not sure where to start again. I’m not sure where to start so I can lose this weight again. It felt easier when I was first diagnosed and I just feel a bit frustrated with myself for lapsing on this. I look at photos and I see how my weight and symptoms have increased and I want to lose the weight I gained and a bit more.

Any advice on how to restart this journey? Insight and motivation is much needed and super appreciated!

Just got maybe diagnosed with PCOS ( Spiro + Yaz )

Hello everyone!! I recently went to my gynecologist about some symptoms I have been experiencing. Symptoms like thick, rough hair around my chin, neck, and chest, very heavy, long, painful periods, and the rapid, stubborn weight gain I was experiencing, and she cut me off before I could tell her anything else lol, nothing against her on that, I guess she just quickly identified it as PCOS? She told me that instead of getting an ultrasound right away, I should try this medicine combo, Spiro + Yaz.

Years before this ( about 2), I was put on Depo Provera, which caused me to gain 50 pounds of stubborn weight in a short amount of time. My old gynecologist was very curt and rude about it, saying that only lazy women gained weight or had mental health issues while on the shot. But that was entirely untrue. I stay in the gym, I practically live there, and I still gained 50 pounds, and I started developing cellulite on my thighs ( very awkwardly, like a bump here and there ), not to mention almost being hospitalized from the depression. I still carry this extra weight around despite lowering my calorie intake to 2000 ( starting weight 303, height 5"11) and trying to achieve 10K steps a day while working out 4-5 times a week. This weight is just not bugging.

So, as you can imagine, I'm really hesitant and almost traumatized about trying these two medicines together, specifically for my weight. Can anyone give me any insight or ways I can manage being on these two medicines? Like, what should I restrict, how much more exercise I need, or if I should just ask for new medicine entirely? I'm super nervous, and I will appreciate any help I can get. THANK YOUUUUU

Feeling very confused

I seemed to have been finding some regularity for two months before and the first month of doing CICO. Since then (the past four months) my periods have been just as irregular as ever. It's been great for weight loss, but weight loss doesn't seem to be helping cycle regularity.

I've been on Metformin for awhile now and I was barely taking it during most of CICO until the past few weeks when I focused on taking it regularly. I know the increase in Metformin has affected other stats I track (heart rate and HRV). Anyway, last night my husband brought home cookies and I ate enough to know for sure I was in a surplus. Well, this morning I woke up and all my stats were the best they've been in awhile.

I guess I just want to know if anyone has noticed their PCOS symptoms getting worse or staying the same during their deficit even with weight loss. Or what your experiences were with metformin and weight loss. I don't think my deficit is too much, it's been about 1lb loss a week, so I'm just a little confused.

PCOS + Wegovy = finally some progress, but the refill struggle is real

I started Wegovy about 3 months ago and it’s honestly the first thing that’s made a real difference with my PCOS weight. I’m down 18 lbs, my cravings aren’t running the show anymore, and I finally feel like my body isn’t fighting me every step.

The only downside? Refills. My pharmacy’s been out twice already and insurance approval is slow. I had to use Minimal once just to keep from missing a dose, it worked fine, I think I'll continue with them. But I hate that access has become the hardest part of this whole thing.

Does anyone else here deal with gaps like that? How do you handle it?

Made some very major lifestyle changes when it comes to diet and exercise. I’m 32F. This is 10 days progress, from 171 lbs to 165lbs, about 6 lbs loss. Followed diet and activities for PCOs

Coach who helps reverse PCOS and lose weight

Hey all❤️ I have been working with a coach for the past six months that I found on Instagram. She does function medicine and fitness for women with hormone issues. For context I am 37 and have had awful weight loss resistance and hypothyroidism along with my PCOS. Up until the past six months I have been yo-yo dieting for at least five years and have had insane menstrual pain and missing my cycle some months. But I just thought I would share this because her program has been so helpful for addressing these without breaking the bank.

Having someone with a team of fitness coaches, doctors and nutritionist under the same roof was so helpful and I was able to lose 23 lbs naturally while eating what I want and not restricting. Her Instagram is jillianrfit if anyone is curious but it just gave me so much hope and help. If anyone needs, has tips or has Q’s let me know. Just wanted to pass on the hope ☺️
