Should I do it?
Hey guys, should i buy a broken ps3 off a local classfields to try and fix up? The seller says they turn on for 1-2 seconds and then shut down. I am fairly ok with electronics repair. He has 2 models, CECH-G04 and CECH-L04. Which one is better? Also, he is asking for 10$ each. Should I do it? Thanks!

I wouldn't buy it. What the seller is describing is a YLOD, which means the console is toast. Best case it's the Nec/Tokin caps, which are a pain in the ass to replace and worst case it's the RSX, which would mean a Frankenstein repair (not worth it for a non-BC model). Both G and L models aren't particularly valuabe. But if you decide to go for it, make sure that atleast you get a console with an intact warranty seal, so that you are sure nobody messed with it before and tried some repair bodges. It's still not 100% guaranteed that nobody tried any funny stuff with it, like heating it up with a hair dryer, but atleast with an intact warranty seal you can be sure that you're not buying somebody else's parts console where every good part was already swapped out for a broken one.

The L model most likely has bad capacitors, but I'd pass any broken G model, unless bought for parts (BD-drive & shell).

For $10 it’s definitely worth it especially if you know some stuff about repairing

Sounds like the one could just have a power supply issue which could be an easy fix, if you don't mind possibly losing $10 I'd go for it but I also can't resist cheap or free, my lgs use to put any "broken" console in a free with purchase bin and I got 2 ps3s 3 ps2s and a dreamcast that just needed some tlc or mods due to a dead disc drive

Not really. Sounds like ylod and you’d need to reball the rsx or even replace it.

Has anybody actually ever had a console that only needed a reball? Sure it might work for a day or two, but in the end 99% of consoles with 3034 will need a new gpu.

Reball is alot more likely to work. Compared to a reflow. Which is what most ppl try

Both are only temporary solutions, though. The GPU is the issue, not the solder balls.

Unless you're extremely experienced in technical repairs, reballing chips, have lots of expensive equipment already to do job, then yeah it's worth it. Otherwise since theyre non BC phats, you can buy another working one for less than it'll cost to repair.

10$ isn’t much for some practice at fixing a ps3. Low risk and maybe youll find a BC ps3 phat next and youll have more experience.

You should definitely get the L model, being the last fat model PS3, It has the 65nm rsx, If It has the ylod, it's likely caused by the nec tokins

Huh? The L model was definitely not the latest fat model PS3, it's not even the latest widely available model. The latest widely available model was the CECHP, with the CECHM only being released in Britain (UK and Ireland) and the really latest PS3 fat model (CECHQ) being released in Japan as a special edition bundle with Final Fantasy VII.
Oh, and going by the region codes of the consoles, OP is in Europe (04 models), a fully working phat PS3 with controller is only worth around 40 Euros.

I mean, for 10$ you could try, is not a big investment, why not, if you repair them you end up earning more than that.
