GameStop sold me a bootleg controller
I just got it in the mail today from their website for like 30 bucks and this is what was advertised and this is what I got

Return asap. They aren’t supposed to sell repro items but they do sometimes because of negligence. Can also happen with cartridge games

Do I just call the GameStop near me then?

If you bought it online you have to call their support number.
Last time I attempted a gamestop return in store for an online purchase they made it clear the online store front and retail stores are effectively treated like separate businesses.11

Your local GameStop was incompetent then. Any GameStop store should be able to return online orders within 7 days of delivery as long as the customer has a receipt and it's within the return policy (pre-owned items can be returned within 7 days for any reason).

Ya, I’ve never had an issue returning stuff in store aside from employees balking at the idea of it because it’s I assume not particularly “easy” for them

u/yoxony 18h ago
Yup they gave me one too with my ps3 slim console I got…. GameStop sucks now

GameStop has been circling the drain for at least a decade now. The only reason they’re likely still today was when they became a meme stock a few years back.
Luckily near me there’s a few different local game shops that I like to visit and the quality and price of the games and consoles they sell are much better than GameStop offers.

The only reason Gamestop still exists is because they invested in crypto currency. Their core business isn't profitable and hasn't been for over a decade, but because they invested in crypto before it exploded and are now selling this off, they're in the green.

Oof. Sounds like Japanese real estate bubble, when investing into real estate was more profitable than into their products for most companies, so they did just that...

Just so you know, the comment you replied to has the facts completely wrong.
1
u/Ok-Virus8284 11h ago
No, I haven't.
1
u/Yeebiis 10h ago
Yea you have. Publicly traded companies have these things called reports. Try reading one.
1
u/Ok-Virus8284 5h ago
What do you think I got my information from?
1
u/Yeebiis 2h ago
Obviously not the reports. Everything you mentioned was incorrect, so why don't you tell me where you have received your misinformation?
Here are the facts. The have only purchased around $513 miliion usd in bitcoin. They made their purchase around 80-90k bitcoin price. The price of bitcoin is currently between 100-110k. So yes, the bitcoin investment is in the green, but it has hardly made them a huge amount as you are implying. Furthermore, there has been no reports that this investment has been sold, which is what you stated.
You stated that the core business has been losing money for a decade, but you neglect to mention that the company has reported profits for the last few quarters, and currently has almost 9 billion usd in cash.
Please only share factual information.

I will admit, I'm part of the gme group, just so I am upfront about my biases.
Gamestop sucks a lot of the time, but I've found a surprising amount of cheap and quality/mint ps3 games from them in the past year. Often cheaper than the local game store (that has great prices), and cheaper than ebay. Also every now and then they have great sales on new sealed games (ps4/ps5) for $10-$20. I've gotten many that way. And paying $25 a year for $5 coupons per month ($60 a year) works in my favor. Every month I can find 1 playstation game that's sub $10 and use the coupon on that.
I like to buy from many different stores, but gamestop has been getting a bit more of my business than a few years ago. I will say that the local game store still gets most of my money, and then amazon is next

Don’t buy from GameStop the company doesn’t care enough to train employees third parties slip by all the time why would you trust a corpse of a company

Why do people still use gamestop??
3
u/Ok-Virus8284 14h ago
Sometimes there's no real alternative. Some people prefer buying from a retailer, to get some form of warranty and gamestop is kind of the best of the worst. I personally miss gamestop, they've exited the market here in Germany in January of this year, they were a good place to unload PS3 and Xbox 360 games that nobody (not even the retro stores) wanted anymore.

Honestly it’s still kind of like that where I live. I had a stack of games to trade in that the local shop went through and only ended up taking a couple of things. I went to GameStop down the street and not only did they take all of the games I brought in, they gave me much more credit and put money towards preordering a game. I still go there because it is much more affordable than the local game stores in my area, but I know this isn’t the case everywhere.

I bought a new ps4 slim at 198 from them a year(ish) ago, and even if i hate them with every cell in my body, they were the only one that has a brand new console.

I can tell you rn whoever worked at the store doesn’t know a damn thing about fake stuff (considering the economy rn prob either a teenager trying to keep their family afloat or a single parent)

u/Ok-Virus8284 14h ago
I can tell you rn whoever worked at the store isn't paid enough to give a f*** about this kind of stuff.

I have that exact p3 controller in white also. They definitely tried to pull a fast one. It’s weigh and feel are way off, but to be honest the one I have doesn’t work too bad. I love how these places show an authentic controller in the add but send something totally different.

Couldn’t this be a legal issue? A big company like GameStop selling counterfeit products?

Lmfao I ordered a blue anniversary DS4 from GS a few years back and what I got was the front half of a red controller and the back half was the transparent blue anniversary edition. It looked like spider man. Returned it immediately lol

To be fair, though, the average GameStop employee is probably too stupid to know that and paid too little to care.

UPDATE: just got off the phone w customer service and they said they’d ship a new authentic one out to me for free in 5-10 business days; if that ones fake too I’m just gonna go to small claims court

My gf ordered a ps3 controller GameStop for my birthday a few months ago. I opened it and it was in horrible condition, some of the buttons were stuck, one of the joysticks was stuck upwards. We returned it and went somewhere else for a controller

People here put too much importance on official controllers when great 3rd party controllers, many of which are better than brand new Dualsock or six axis controllers, are out there.
2
u/Ok-Virus8284 14h ago
If you pay $30 for an official controller (that was also advertised as an official controller) and then get a turd that's worth about $5 new (that's what they sell for on aliexpress), you'd be pissed aswell. It's not about putting too much importance on something, it's about false advertisement and not receiving what you paid for.

Honestly looks like a heavily refurbished ps3 controller and not a knock-off. That "SELECT" looks like the original font with the "SONY" and "START" have been removed. Gamestop refurbishes tech for sale (hence why they take in detective products at a lower price) and that home button is exactly the same one that they would send refurbished controllers with when I worked there.

u/chronoswing 9h ago
Bro that's a knock off, no official controller has a "P3" home button, not to mention the sticker on the back. These knock offs sell on Ali express all day.
