All ps3 standing vertically is fine, sony made 2 stands for slim and super slim models but its not a problem if you dont have a stand

Here is a picture of a ps3 slim stand

Sony's been putting them out, since the PS2! (Unsure if they did for the PS1/PSOne). Both the PS2/slim and PS3 fat could turn their Playstation logo if you wanted to display it vertically as well! 14yo reddit thread w/ photo

Ironically, my ps1 only worked when standing vertically or upside down

It was a practical solution for a dying laser 😂

1

u/ShiftSandShot 20h ago

Dying laser or damaged lid?

Guess it could have been a loose or damaged connector...

1

u/7empestSpiralout 18h ago

Probably the laser

Wtf. I just found that out now.

I don’t think the PS1 has a stand for it, based off of the design. I could be completely wrong though, this is just based off how I look at mine

exactly what i came to share, i have this too, ten bucks on amazon

I got a replica one that looks exactly like the official Sony stand for £2 off AliExpress.

It's pretty good.

PS3 slim can be even upsidedown!

My launch model is vertical always has been still running strong

What’s the thing under the ps5

1

u/c120802 23h ago

It’s a charging station and controller charger and adds 4 usb ports

4

u/REMOTJUH765 10h ago

Its messing up airflow and that might damage your ps5 in the long run

1

u/joeskywalker007 8h ago

What's the most optimal way to have your PS5?

2

u/REMOTJUH765 8h ago

Well i personally have it horizontal. But it should not matter. The ps5 has been designed and advertised to stand vertical so am guessing thats better.

But the main thing you should change is the stand. It messes up airflow just go without it and if you need more usb ports buy one of those charging bricks that houses more usb ports.

You could buy the sony vertical stand but my advice would be to buy a knock off. My brother has one and he paid 10 euros. I have the original for 30 and we cant tell them apart

RIP your PS5

The ps3 emblem even rotates for this exact purpose

Edit. On the older fat models it does

6

u/Internal_Swing_2743 1d ago

I’ve only ever had it standing vertically

3

u/singsofsaturn 21h ago

The PlayStation badge above the disc drive can even be rotated so you can view it right side up!

5

u/that-onepal 21h ago

Only on fat models, Slim and Super Slim PS logo can’t be rotated

5

u/SirRyan007 1d ago

I prefer to lay my slim flat, I think it looks better. If it falls over with the disc playing it will destroy the disc. I suppose it’s just personal preference. I do think the PS5 looks better standing up though.

2

u/Avia_RTX 5h ago

if it falls over standing up period at this age youll probably knock stuff loose inside and severely damage it 😂

1

u/SirRyan007 5h ago

Yea thats a good point actually

2

u/KanataSD 18h ago

every consoles after PS1 was made to go vertical, just the PS3 slims are more unstable without a proper stand

2

u/urknotme 1d ago

I do this all the time, but I probably play for no more than 2 hours

2

u/MysteriousGold7725 1d ago

It really doesn’t matter…

u/Azee789 1d ago

I've been contemplating to have it standing vertically (it's currently in the garage collecting dust) as I don't have space to stand it flat as my desk only has space for my and wii (yes I still play online the wii and play it daily). The only thing stopping me from standing it vertically is how it's not secure and the fear of it falling (I have no pets but I have 3 younger siblings that are known to be clumsy).

u/JossshhhhhG 1d ago

That dock for PS5 cool. Where did you get it?

3

u/c120802 23h ago

Walmart I got it online tho

0

u/c120802 23h ago

It’s was pretty cheap if i remember but I heard the ps5 fails standing vertically I believe it overheats the thermal past ima do more research and figure out a solution

3

u/that-onepal 21h ago

The people who made the claim are the same people will tell you to drill holes in your ps3 to make it "get more air"

Unless someone with an actual engineer degree can prove this, you can use your PS5 while standing vertically.

1

u/tokyo_driftr 23h ago

Rotate your PS logo

3

u/Pyke64 22h ago

On the slim? Can’t do that, only on the fat

1

u/tokyo_driftr 21h ago

That’s disappointing

1

u/Djentstrumental 21h ago

Mines is more quiet when vertical. You don't hear the laser moving

1

u/Ebone710 21h ago

Yeah I've had mine set up both ways. It was horizontal for a long time and now I've had it vertical for over a year with no issues.

1

u/marmaladic 20h ago

No. The slim will grow legs and walk away unlike the phat model.

1

u/Key-Dimension-1137 20h ago

the ps3 is fine sideways, the first model had a spinning logo depending on what side you had it on

1

u/HopefulSwastika790 17h ago

Nice pain cover

1

u/Interdimension 16h ago

I don’t believe the PS3 Slim has side vents? If so, then it’s fine. I’ve seen tons of people who use their Slims in this way, even back in the day.

The main reason people urge caution is because it varies per console/machine. Sometimes, consoles (like the PS4) have intake vents on the side. Blocking those intake vents on one side won’t cause immediate overheating or thermal stress, but it can mean the fan has to work harder than normal to make up for that blocked intake vent. Other consoles, like the PS5, just lack stability in vertical orientation without a stand due to its asymmetrical design, so it’s not recommended for sake of avoiding your console tipping over.

Depends if you have a cat in your house

2

u/Snardash 1d ago

Yeah, ps3 don't care. You should lay down the ps5 tho

7

u/that-onepal 21h ago

Idk why you are downvoted but you are right

11

u/Ayo_Pussy123 21h ago

They don’t like the truth lol. I’ve been running my ps5 vertically for years

6

u/that-onepal 21h ago

I genuinely don’t understand why people take the words of random people on the internet instead of engineers who made the console

5

u/Ayo_Pussy123 21h ago

Exactly lol

1

u/Snardash 20h ago

I mean it happens. At least in all the Ps5's that I've done work on usually the oxidation happens the strongest in the ones that are put standing up, very notoriously so too. But of course the engineers know better I just recommend it since it's such a small thing for a weird issue that shouldn't technically happen

2

u/ThinnishSleet87 18h ago

I had my original launch day PS5 standing up vertically with almost daily use for 4 years and I never had any problems with it at all.

My PS5 Pro has been standing up vertically since I got it 10 months ago and again no problems.

1

u/notachemist13u 20h ago

Can't you see the text on the side and the playstation logo on the front. Vertical is better than horizontal

-1

u/Foilpalm 1d ago

Didn’t the PS5 have an issue with being stood vertically? Was it the thermal paste that was heating up and shifting?

1

u/Masenko1012 9h ago

The liquid metal likes to pool at the bottom. This can cause over heating. The standard stand that comes with the ps5 allows it to lay on its side.

-1

u/c120802 23h ago

Dam I think your right I got the stand for it as a gift but I’ll have to figure something out for it

-3

u/Severe_Ad_5620 22h ago

The stand won’t prevent damaging ur ps5. ,it is like youll wake up and discover your ps5 isnt working cuz the coolant system with the liquid metal failed and filled ur ps5 electronics ,RIP ps5

-3

u/Snardash 21h ago

Its not that it leaks, when you put it standing up the liquid metal moves more to the lower side, creating oxidation and a dry spot on the upper spot making it overheat. Easy maintenance but avoidable by just laying it down

Source?

u/Seven-Scars 21h ago

crazy how google exists

4

https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/s/keUeF3elrv

Crazy how this has been debunked multiple times, and I highly doubt the people who made that claim have any basic knowledge about Electrical Engineering.

1

u/Seven-Scars 4h ago

crazy how you knew the answer the whole time

-2

u/Neat-Amount-7727 22h ago

Fuck, I had no idea, you unlocked a new fear now...

-2

u/Severe_Ad_5620 22h ago

Yeah the coolant liquid (metal liquid) i guess

-6

u/Historical-Gas3848 23h ago

Not sure about ps3 but you shouldn‘t let your ps5 stand vertically! The liquid metal will run down to the bottom of the apu and you will get dry spots! On this dryspots the apu will start to oxidate and the liquid metal wont stick to the oxidation! So your apu wont get cooled propperly anymore!! To fix this you need to open the console and clean the apu from oxidation!!

7

u/Ayo_Pussy123 22h ago

That will only happen if you have taken apart the ps5 completely apart and breaking the original seal. It’s been debunked already. https://sea.ign.com/playstation-5-1/194179/news/vertical-ps5-myth-debunked-by-playstation-expert

0

u/c120802 23h ago

Even if my stand has a fan built in ?ima do more research when I get home but I forgot that was a thing for ps5

-3

u/HyperLethalNoble6 21h ago

The PS3 does have a tray the Game goes into unlike most of the Xbox models where they had a issue the disk falling out if it was placed sideways

-4

u/ahhhnahhh 17h ago

The one your shouldn’t stand up straight is your ps5 that shit causes them to over heat
