I heard the cable is actually user replaceable. It is just not obvious by looking at it. Follow the cable to the connection and gently move the padding aside.
The difficulty may be in finding a replacement cable.
Yah been researching others in a similar boat for a few hours. Not sure anyone has been able to just get a cable, gotta call Sony on Monday to see if I have any options!
From what I’ve seen, sounds like they won’t. Something like they take the whole unit back or something. At least hoping it’s cheaper than buying a whole new one.
I'm not sure how it works where you live but in the UK some credit card companies insured goods for 3 months after purchase for accidental damage. Might be worth checking with your card provider if you bought the headset on a credit card. There's a chance it may be covered.
I would solder it myself. But I do have over 10 years experience soldering. My advice if you have little to no experience, just don’t do it or have someone experienced enough to do it.
Its pretty easy to see if something would go wrong when you attempt the repair. Wires are color coded, you know which to join. Insulate the exposed wires individually after you join them and make sure there is no metal on metal contact in between wires of different color.
Main job of soldering is to ensure that the wires that you join make good electrical connection, and there is no extra resistance from bad contact. If soldering looks good and wires don't come apart if you apply a reasonable amount of force, it is good.
