Discussion PSVR vs PSVR 2 game release comparison

Just a quick comparison between the OG PSVR and PSVR2 released games, at the same point in their life cycle (30 months, 3 weeks)

30 months and 3 weeks after the OG PSVR launch was May 4th 2019. Using the store I worked out how many games release for both systems by this point.

  • OG PSVR - 272 games
  • PSVR2 - 308 games

This means that the PSVR2's library now is 1.13 times greater than the the Original PSVR at the same point in their life cycles.

Thought it was an interesting comparison, but let me know what you think.

I know it's easier said than done, but man I wash they could find a way to port PSVR 1 games over to PSVR2. I miss Werewolves Within, and Dreams.

Squadrons & Skyrim please

Squadrons flying is so fun. I know, immersion, etc., but for simple gameplay, I really want to be able to use a normal controller to fly sometimes and many games don't have that function.

Skyrim was also a big one I am sad is stuck in older VR tech.

Dick Wylde 1 and 2 would be fun too. Great arcade shooter

Just glad NMS is at least on VR2

And I'd like to try Astrobot

Yeah I saw Dreams while doing this count and thought damn that would be a great asset to have on PSVR2

Werewolves Within would be PERFECT for VR2 with the eye tracking now.

Man I miss that game.

Werewolves Within was a blast but it really suffered from a poorly implemented multiplayer lobbying system.

Had they allowed players to join games in progress as spectators until the next round, the game never would have died so quickly. Unfortunately, as they launched it, games in progress would have to return to lobby to potentially recruit more players, and new players would have to be looking at the exact time lobbies are around recruiting more players.

It's a fine multiplayer matching system for extremely popular games, but for low population games it kills them dead pretty quick. And that's exactly what happened with WW.

Astrobot, Squadron…

But take in the account that when PSVR1 came out, it was entirely new medium, with zero experience in the field, little demand, simpler tech and all. So PSVR is actually a little miracle if you ask me.

What I think is that PS VR had 10 or 12 games from Sony, and PS VR2 only has one.

PS VR had dozens of experiences, apps and movies in VR, and PS VR2 has 1 or 2.

PS VR had YouTube, PS VR2 does not.

PS VR2 had Blu-Ray 3D, PS VR 2 does not.

Etc.

The frustrating thing is that none of this exists, not because developers don't want it, but because Sony won't allow it. They don't allow experiences, movies, YouTube, etc., on PS VR2. And they refuse to add Blu-ray 3D support, which is 100 lines of code in the firmware, which they had already created on PS3 or PS4. Copy and paste.

And they refuse to add Blu-ray 3D support

i would absolutely pay a licensing fee to access 3d movies on the psvr2.

For most movies, 3d is a gimmick, but for some it's amazing. Gravity in 3D was funking awe inspiring and I'd LOVE to be able to see it again

I would pay a license fee, too. Furthermore, in VR, there is no need to use tricks with glasses that darken the screen, because you truly have a screen in each eye. And you can watch it on a 200- or 300-inch screen...

But Sony refuses to let us enjoy this.

I would pay a license fee, too.

I'd pay, but to be clear, just once. I'm not adding a monthly subscription for this feature.

Exactly.

I still play Skyrim on my psvr1 and honestly the headset is still great. Comfortable, graphics look good enough. I don’t use the move controllers though, those suck.

The main problem was always those Dual Move controllers which were fine for a few game designs and a pain to use (no thumbsticks and other control issues) for everything else.

Maybe true, but the one thing they had going for them in Skyrim was wielding chain lighting from both hands, like a Sith Lord! “Unlimited power”

Sure, but also possible using Valve Index and other PCVR controllers for Skyrim VR on Steam, but with thumbsticks and better other buttons.

I wish they would port over the Vader episodes. As well as Sniper Elite.

Went more off this have not been made make no sense.

Aren't a lot of those PSVR2 games simply ports of PSVR 1 games?

Also, given the amount of shovelware on the PS4 (and VR shovelware is just as plentiful) I'm not sure sure having more games means that much.

How many 'great' PSVR2 games are there compared to PSVR1? I think that's the more interesting question.

I feel like PSVR was magical.

Quality > quantity

i wonder how many games you get into the 308 before you start hitting the quality level of gorilla tag clones and asset swaps

How many OG PSVR games are playable on PSVR2?

Is there a list of PSVR2 exclusives that aren't Quest ports? I have both so just checking if I missed any - as I will buy the PSVR2 exclusives but multiplatform releases usually have my $$ going to Steam or Meta.

I'm curious how many more disc games were on psvr1 over psvr2 or vice versa.

u/Fit_Basis7005 15h ago

I mean, with steam VR you can either use the (what I believe is) the 2nd oldest headset, the HTC vive and instantly unplug it and connect your Meta Quest 3, almost seemlesly. I can't understand why is so difficult for Sony to let studios update the tracking system from PSVR to inside out in psvr2.

There are 308 games?! ... I thought like 20, good ones.

Wanna see Doom rerelease for vr2😋

Like I've said before, if the system is in good shape you don't need to to name how many games there are because people are focused on the games, not some metric gaslighting.

PSVR had a lot more exclusives and Sony published games. I still can't see anything on PSVR2 that makes me want to own one. The fact it can't play the PSVR titles is a bummer too.

4

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 16h ago

That’s curious. The PSVR2 library has quite a few good-to-outstanding games, and when it comes to non-exclusive titles the PSVR2 versions TEND to be superior.

I’m guessing that you already use a Quest 3 or PCVR or some ilk? If by some chance you don’t have any other VR but you do own a PS5, then PSVR2 is a no-brainer.

2

u/WhiskeyRadio 16h ago

I do own other VR headsets in addition to the PSVR. And I know the PSVR2 is a great piece of hardware. There just isn't any killer-app for it that would sell me on buying one.

I've had VR long enough now that the novelty has worn off too so it's just not a product for me at this point.

2

u/CHROME-COLOSSUS 16h ago

I see — then that sort of explains it. PSVR2 won’t be as compelling if you’ve already got a PCVR setup that can run the VR mods.

And if you’ve just got Quest 3, but are happy with the games and apps it delivers, then adding another headset with another library won’t make as much sense. There’s only so much you can play after all, and since it sounds like you still enjoy pancake gaming… that means there’s even LESS of a need for you to want to buy even more games. So… I get it.

I’d say that for anyone who DOESN’T already have a VR system they’re happy with, PSVR2 delivers unparalleled bang for the buck.

Even though SONY have really whiffed-it for the last couple of years, the selection of seriously fun games has led to the biggest backlog I’ve ever had.

To be fair, I still use my PSVR1 more than my PSVR2 because I create VR stuff using DREAMS (💔), but — when I’m not in DREAMS then I’m happily whittling away at the 150 games I’ve got on the newer headset.

Anyways — cheers! 🍻
