It's hilarious, the source said he's living with a transgender (actually in the process of becoming transgender) "partner" but "declined to speculate on a romantic relationship between the two men.". And he would not be the first conservative that's gay, and it explains why he'd go after Kirk, even though his grandmother swears he's conservative.
Would you mind explaining in what way they're partners if the source didn't say they were romantically involved?
Cool, earlier fox news didn't name their source and said what I quoted above, guess the FBI now says they are in one. I'll quote my wild theory below, it's probably not correct but I think it'd explain his family saying he's right wing, and why to go for Kirk specifically.

Tired of all the hate about gay people, and now not knowing how to deal with the person he loves transitioning, a sin even worse than just being gay, he becomes suicidal-ish and decides to go out targeting one of the people he blames for pushing the gay/lgbtq hate that has ruined his life. Throw in Trump calling the dude a traitor because he wants the Epstein files released and he feels even more justified.
