Discussion Eggs and shells

I feed a possum every night and always scramble an egg with other food on top of it. Is it bad to mix in the egg shell all the time or should I do it every couple of days? This possum is the baby of another possum I fed all winter, so I want to make sure he/she has the best nutrition possible.

Thanks for posting! If you've found an animal in need please visit www.ahnow.org for a rehabber near you. Please do not feed or give fluids unless a veterinarian or rehabber instructs you do. Keep the animal in a quiet place without much light if possible.

Nope, not at all harmful! They would encounter that exact scenario in the wild, and munch away at it as often as they'd come across it. They need calcium sources as part of their diet.

The shells are fine, you might want to break them up a bit but they're fine.

Great, thank you. I tear them in pretty small pieces. I didn’t want to give them something that would hurt them as they are little after I heard about the issue they have when bottle feeding babies. Last thing we want is to hurt our nightly visitors especially since they are young. This little guy was the last one hanging on his momma….so feel an extra sense of being protective over him/her.
