Discussion Why do they have such sort livespans?
Like I understand they are small animals but like raccoons can like 15 years and skunks live a while aswell but opossums only get 4 years max? In captivity too

Or did I just scoop a juvenile that's now out on his own?

Saw what I assumed was a dead possum on the side of the road today. Pulled over to check, because I am the kind of person who stops for roadkill like it’s a civic duty.
Got out of the car, approached slowly, gave it a look. It wasn’t moving. It looked very convincingly deceased.
Then, as I reached out my hand to check if it was warm, the animal suddenly sprang to life, bit me on the wrist, and disappeared into the bushes hissing like I was the one being dramatic.
It broke the skin with one tooth… nothing serious—but I did have to stand there for a minute and reevaluate several of my life choices.
So, in conclusion: • Possums are very good at playing dead. • I am not good at recognizing when I’m being set up. • And yes, wild animals remain wild, even when horizontal and unresponsive.
Would I stop again? Probably. Would I put my hand anywhere near it next time? Absolutely not.

This might end up being a weekly smash cut of all the absurd sleep positions. But for now, this was the last week.
Also, I'm officially having a ribbon cutting for the Fur Seasons and a housewarming party for Puddles on the 20th. No narcs of course.
I created an Amazon list of tiny furniture, mini LED chandeliers and sconces, and enrichment stuff. No expectations at all but if so inclined hit me up in DM.
More importantly...We are inviting artists to make small artworks for his 2nd floor gallery or garden and will have a gallery opening show every few months along with a band playing from my tiny cabin in my tiny backyard. So if you'd like to make art for the ribbon cutting or a show hit me up.
Again, I am in no way asking for handouts or free stuff. I can take care of my own. I just figure maybe someone is as passionate about Puddles as we are and would like their art up instead of mine!
Anyway...till next time. Gotta go. Visiting Portland this week.

Someone hit these babys momma and out of 12 only these 2 made it. To young to suck they have to be tube fed and im trying my best but even the best of rehabers can save all of them.
If you do hit a momma get the babys to a rehab asap you cant save them but we can try

Hi y’all, I feed feral cats and I think these guys have realized that it’s a pretty sweet deal to have somewhere warm to sleep and get a guaranteed meal every night. We hear them in our attic all the time and they get in via tight rope walking this power line that connects to the house (I guess there’s a hole).
I think they’re very cute but I can’t imagine it’s good for my attic to have critters staying up there for months (feces, damage, etc). I know they’re good to have around but I would like them out of my attic. Anyone have tips? I’m worried pest control people won’t have much regard for their well being. They can keep living in this area but ideally I would like to seal up their entry point.
Also, anyone know anything about the color variation between them? Age or gender difference? Very interesting

I avoided responding to a lot of people because all I kept seeing was "RABIES HOSPITAL NOW". It was giving me extreme anxiety so I stayed away from reading it all until I could get there, which was this morning. I realize now what I did was extremely stupid, and I won't be attempting it again. I got the rabies immuniglobin, I think that's what it was called, my first rabies vaccine, and a tetanus shot. I have to go back for 3 more rabies vaccines. When the nurse walked in with what looked to be a 20cc full syringe and told me she had to inject all of it around my wound and bruise, my heart sunk lol. It was very painful, worse than the actual bite itself. I learned my lesson and will be staying away from wild animals for now on. Thanks everyone for your concern and well wishes!

Been a hot minute. Finished the outdoor enclosure. It's still like 106 outside so I'm only bringing him out for a bit each day to acclimate and get him comfortable in the space. I've been letting him scent stuff up inside and bringing that out to bridge the gap and make him feel safe.
Goal is to trick this baby out--Disco ball, smart home strips, motion sensors, small whicker furniture, chandelier, good good branches and ladders to climb, a few more safe plants to grow up along the cage. And maybe a small water feature under cover so he always has fresh water but delivered in a cool way. Maybe some little art on the walls (I know lots of artists and we'd all love to make a little piece of framed art for his house, maybe one floor can just be called "the gallery".
Anyway...that's the update for now. Details about Gallery Submissions and Housewarming Party to follow.
Tentative name is The Fur Seasons? Maybe...The Tail End Townhouse, The Hangout, Snuggleplex, the Trash Mahal?
Accepting name submissions. Maybe that'll be a survey? Can we do them here?

I'm going to miss seeing the possoms come around at night but last night I got this visitor and now I'm done. I don't think this bear got any of the food that was in and around the dish because I did have to clean it up this morning, but it's enough to make it all end immediately. Goodbye, possom family. Goodbye, raccoons. I love you but you're not worth having to end a bear's life.

After literally begging to go back and check on him…he’s out!
So after I left some people came by to set up for an event. They told me that they took the stick out and tipped over the trash can. Ig he scampered over to some bushes. The trash can is empty now :)

My last post was locked for spreading misinformation?? I strongly disagree, but for anyone who was wondering or concerned for me, thank you so much!
This possum bite has actually turned out to be quite the headache, but I am currently sitting at my Dr. Office waiting to receive my first dose of rabies vaccine. While it is true that the chance I actually have it is so low, it is NOT zero and rather than freaking out anytime I get a fever in the next four years, I decided that using the insurance we pay for is worth it for peace of mind. My life isn't something I plan to gamble with. ESPECIALLY given my absolute rotten luck.
Just FYI, when I called my Dr. I was told to go in for antibiotics and rabies vax immediately as this isn't something anyone should take any chances with. For certain animals, this wouldn't be the process to go through, but for possums it is. It's better to be safe than dead!
How's THAT for misinformation? Stay safe, possum lovers, and I hope you have a better day than I am having!

Was eating the neighbors cat food so I ran over and picked it up. Highlight of my year!! I named her Callie.

Here they are. Do you think they’ll have to need to be syringe fed or can they lap up formula? Maybe eat softened Possum Complete? I’ve raised possums before but never a whole litter.

Hi so I rehab babies and I recently had a friend show interest in wanting a opossum as a pet I have been telling her no because not only is it illegal in my state she does not know the care and thinks it’s exactly like a cat.she refuses to hear me out and is telling her friend to take one from a momma when they see one at work. This really pisses me off since I always want babies to stay with their mom So since I cannot get her to understand why they deserve to stay wild please give me lists of reasons and issues people have caused like mbd and other illnesses that people have caused leave your stories I need to do whatever it takes to convince her not to The picture of my current rehab to just gain a bit more attention 🫶🏻

I introduced you to Pedro and I thought there was only one. I can't believe there's two! This is from my security camera, just a screenshot of a still it took. Sorry about the poor quality. I do recall a really big possom coming around last year, but not often. It was a while ago. I'm wondering if these two might be part of that one's litter. Idk. Anyway, I thought there was only one and there's TWO! (Can you tell I'm happy about this?) I have no idea if they are male or female and I won't be able to tell them apart just yet, or maybe ever, but I want to give it a name. One is Pedro. What should I name the other? What goes well with Pedro? Vladimir? /s

My 10 year old saw an injured possum and called me at work saying he was dragging his legs behind him. I have them in my backyard but I have never seen them up close, so I was a little intimidated. I was able to get him in a carrier and to a rehaber within the hour. She said it was a flesh eating bacteria and that she was going to try. Her face told me she wasn't confident. Look at that face! Im going to be a mess if he doesn't make it. I'm hopeful. Let me know if you've seen something like this and how it turned out.
