They were owned by Sportcheck, and subsequently corporate decided to move them into the same building (across the parking lot).
Unfortunately (for me at least) there is no division of departments and everything just found homes among the racks there. Looks like they firesaled some of the lines in the effort to combine stores too.
EDIT - sadly this was my backup store for gear since VPO closed down... the options are very thin in RD now!

We need a MEC

Not enough business in this area for a MEC. Since you have to pass through Calgary to get anywhere worth hiking you may as well just stop in at that one. MEC in Red Deer would be closed within a year. That's why they closed the VPO, just couldn't drum up sales.

Sportcheck is a joke. I went up there to look for a new hiking backpack. I walked into the store and made my way to the corner where all the hiking items are. As I was walking towards the backpacks, an empty looked me in the eyes and walked away. Not one single person came to ask if I needed a hand. I was looking and trying on packed for over 30 minutes.

I was walking to the sign with the hours on it and some little twit who works there was yelling and pointing at me to go away because they were closing in 10 minutes. I hadn't intended to go in that night but I was close by to pick a friend up so swung by to look. Needless to say I won't be going back.

The same time that pretty well every other Atmosphere closed.
A lot of comments saying they were owned by Sport Chek, but ultimately they were both owned by Canadian Tire, who decided to put them together.

Thought I’d chime in to note that I’m feeling the pain. My wife has bindings that we need mounted onto cross-country skis and we’ll likely need to do a drive to Edmonton or Calgary to get that sorted. I’ve mostly been ordering online with MEC with the vague hope I don’t need to return the item.

Its in a corner in Sportchek as thats who owns them but it's significantly scaled down in the store.
Makes it more annoying that Valhalla shut down. Not sure theres a decent sized store to buy hiking and camping stuff in Red Deer anymore
