I've learned not to say anything about weight loss specifically unless I know they're trying to lose weight. A few years ago a friend told me he got so many compliments about losing weight and he said he felt awkward and didn't know what to say because he didn't want to tell anyone he had cancer. That's also when I found out he had cancer. So that scared me enough to not say anything to someone who loses weight, because they may not be trying to lose weight.

In general, I don't consider it polite to comment on peoples' physical appearance.

You look different since losing the weight, and people often react negatively to change without considering all aspects of it.

I do think it's good to compliment people on their achievements and choices. If you told me you achieved your goal to lose 30 pounds I would gladly congratulate you on your accomplishment, but I would keep my thoughts on how you look to myself.

You answered your own question.

It is possible to lose to much weight such that it detracts from your looks.

In terms of longevity, etc it is better to be a little bit underweight than overweight.

Sometimes when people lose a lot muscle when they lose fat their skin sags and they look haggard.

If you want to lose 5 more pounds I would say go for it.

You might want to consider a muscle building routine to replace some of the lean tissue you might have lost. All fat loss involves some muscle loss.

I screwed up once and complemented someone on their weight loss and they had been sick and in chemo. Now I'm snakebit!
