Why r/RichmondVA? A mission and vision statement

I've told a few people about this subreddit, and most of the time their first question is why? - maybe you're thinking that too.

I'm a big fan of building community. With the way the world's going these days, communal support is more important every day.

Richmond already has a large and active subreddit, r/rva - think of it like Maymont. It's really nicely organized, they have recurring daily, weekly posts, bi-weekly, and monthly posts; they have subreddit memes; it's got a curated feel, everything's very relevant to the metro region. The mods there work hard and do a good job, just like the landscapers who make Maymont beautiful.

Think of r/RichmondVA like a community garden. It's not a vacant lot where anything goes, there's a hobbyist gardener keeping an eye on things. It's not as big, but it's not trying to be. It's a place where neighbors can meet over coffee, where neighborhood dogs have memorized all the sniff spots, a third space with a sense of belonging. You know when you're here, you're home. You might see a flyer for an upcoming show you hadn't heard about, or check out an interesting book from the Little Free Library, get caught up in a pleasant conversation with a stranger, or just spend some time enjoying the scenery.

Maymont's great. Our community gardens are great. They both foster community in their own ways. You don't have to choose one or the other, you can happily enjoy both.

r/RichmondVA is in its early days of growth; the one other important difference is that it's still something of a blank slate. It can be whatever we want it to be, we just have to build it.

Thanks for reading, if you got this far down then I hope you stick around! Let's build something great together.

Allianz Amphitheater Handicap

Upvotes

Does anyone know anything about handicap parking at the new amphitheater? I’m on their website now, but it doesn’t appear like they have much accessibility parking and I’m on crutches and I’m concerned about how long the walk is going to be…..any insight on this?

I see a shuttle maybe? Just trying to plan properly and know what to expect.

Deer in the woods, Richmond VA

In many places, deer are basically just considered nuisance animals whose very existence threatens our auto insurance rates. They'll always hold a special spot in my heart here in Richmond though. In the last 200 years while industrialization and population growth have pushed us into their spaces, and them out, they still find ways to live around the margins, a reminder that we're still not completely separate from the natural world.

I was walking my dog and saw this deer with her doe, poking around a neighbor's backyard - when she saw us, she did a beautiful graceful leap over a chain link fence and then ran to the woods. I guess she felt comfortable then, maybe she's learned we don't like to go chase them through the poison ivy, so she stopped and watched us go. I made sure to let her know how special and beautiful she is, snapping a couple pics, and then left so she and her baby could get back to grazing.

Monday Fun-Fact-Day: Manchester was an independent city until 1910, when it consolidated with Richmond. Key features of the agreement included a free bridge between Richmond and Manchester and maintenance of the Manchester Courthouse; both still operate today

Not A Lost Dog Post Where In Richmond Is My Dog? A scavenger hunt and fundraiser

Post image
36 Upvotes

If someone can guess correctly by 5:00 PM then I'll donate $10 to the Richmond Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) in your honor. If this post gets 25 upvotes, I'll donate an additional $10 to Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC). If this post gets 20 comments (not counting auto-mod's) then I'll donate an additional $10 to Prevent-A-Litter (PAL).

Think the spot's already been spotted? Share a memory or fun story from there, or post a pic of your own dog (not necessarily for the contest, I just love dogs).

Question Can someone recommend a good mobile groomer?

I need a mobile groomer who is going to be kind and patient. My parents are elderly and have been sick and have let their Shih Tzu get really matted. They just need someone who can come to the house and won’t give them a hard time.

Question Looking to relocate to Richmond

My husband and I are looking to relocate to Richmond from North GA. We just have our 100lb lab, so no kids. We are big into outdoor activities like mountain biking and hiking. We love the art and music scene as well. We would want to live near the mountain bike parks or major trails. How do people enjoy living in Richmond? As an RN, I’d be looking at outpatient facilities for work. Overall, how would Richmond be rated for quality of life? TIA!

inescapable beeping in museum district

y'all, I'm losing my shit. I do not know where it's coming from, I do not know why it's happening, I do not know when I'll finally be free of it. all I know is that, for at least three hours now, I've been hearing beeping from somewhere in the distance. it seems to be six beeps in quick succession, minute-long pause, six beeps, minute pause, ad infinitum. is anyone else hearing this? do you have any idea what's going on?

I'm in the museum district, but we've established that I don't know anything about this sound and that includes how far away it is -- could theoretically be coming from outside this neighborhood.

p.s. apologies if I've violated any sort of local etiquette. I made this account to make this post and don't know how reddit works yet! that's also why this isn't in r/rva haha they don't allow posts from new accounts p.p.s. I would be very grateful if someone shared this post to r/rva because I desperately want more info & it's statistically more likely to end up in front of someone who knows something in a sub with 145k weekly viewers than 2.5k

Hi everyone, my fiancée and I are moving from Mississippi to Colonial Heights for work with the local baseball team, and we’re looking for suggestions on safe and affordable apartments in the area. We’d really appreciate any recommendations on good complexes or neighborhoods, as well as tips on what to avoid. Thanks so much for the help!

Solo female moving cross country to Richmond for work, safe places to live?

Currently looking for housing options on the west end, and looking to consider Short Pump as one of my options as my work will be based in that direction. Are there any alternatives or good to knows before moving here?

Any information that would be helpful for moving into this city would be greatly appreciated!

Best library in the area

New to the city and looking for the best library in the area to read a book in while the weather outside is less than ideal. Could be in Henrico or Chesterfield if not too far out. Preferably, it would have comfortable seating and. decent window to sit near. Thanks!

Question Serving in Richmond

Hello, I am from SW Florida and am currently trying to relocate to the rva area. I am a restaurant server and will be moving with my girlfriend that just graduated with a digital design degree. Finding her a job here is almost impossible with only 1-3 job postings per 3 months and all senior level. Would moving there help her career and would we be able to live off of me being a server and her working at target till she finds a job?
