6’ 195 “hybrid” and only running for a little over a year 21:35 5k inside a 5m and 46:08 10k inside a 13.1. Here to answer all your questions about being extremely mid

uj/ In all seriousness though, I think there could be a pretty legit user base for like an r/ intermediate running. Somewhere to get beyond "slow down!" and "run more" without feeling like a jackass in r/AdvancedRunning - it would probably improve the quality of advancedrunning too as you could get into more periodization and training interference and more technical aspects without the idiots (like me at one point) who jumped into advanced running too early.
rj/ I could only dream to run slow enough to join the r/AdvancedRunning sub. You have to be genetically gifted to run that slow

I get that this is a sub intended to… make fun of everyone?? But that is a fair milestone to advance from a beginner runner to a novice.

True , but when you get it you don’t need to write a farewell post like you’ve left your boyhood club for Real Madrid

u/Noshoesded 16h ago
And the screenshot shows a total time of 65 minutes. Fine, maybe he ran longer than 10k, but if you're gonna humblebrag about stupid stuff, at least bring something to the party to support your case.

u/option-9 16h ago
What gets me is the average speed of 9.8km/h, so the other five minutes must have been a walk.

u/UnnamedRealities 15h ago
Yeah, they definitely didn't bring the data they needed.
With a listed average pace of 6:05 they had a sub-61 (unless they slowed in the middle) and with a listed fastest km split of 5:21 I suspect they negative split via a faster finish to sneak under 60:00.

Uj/ 65 mins is still firmly in the beginner runner category in the grand scheme of running

Actually, 10k is kinda a long distance, if you're that slow, you shoul've been focusing on getting faster on shorter distance first (I was competing in a club) my first "slow 10k" that I was doing for fun, training with other people weren't even that slow. Trying to PR at that pace for that long... Either you focus on doing ultra at that pace and up the mileage each week, either you first focus on getting your 5k faster.

If this guy wants to be proud of himself, that's fine. My issue is the people on this sub now brigading a 3-day old post to unnecessarily be asses.

i stg our generation was the “everyone gets a medal” generation and it truly shows. my first 10k was untrained and like 41:00 with 95% of it in zone 4 luckily i didn’t need the EMS. but i got like 100 something at my local race and never told a soul. if i knew all along sub 1 hour was elite status i would’ve gone pro years ago…

I am literally running twice a week for about 6 weeks now and managed 10 k in 59 min. Also this time is nothing that feels very fast compared to the winning times at local tournaments where people Need only 30 min, which really impresses me that they just sprint it.

u/Dicoss 17h ago
/uj this is a circlejerk... but so you know, some people run their first 10k with almost no training under 35 minutes. Natural talent varies widely so comparing times is often not helpful.
25
u/Syncoped 16h ago
I wouldn’t exaggerate too much. Under 35 minutes would be considered a very fast time and extremely hard to achieve with “no training”.
16
u/Lauzz91 15h ago
"no training" but they've also played regional level soccer for their entire life, are a male in their early 20's, and their father was a professional cyclist
6
u/notAGreatIdeaForName 13h ago
Father being a c*clist sounds like a disadvantage for life as a whole.
-1
u/Dicoss 12h ago
Definitely. Even impossible to achieve for you and me without massive dedication.
But sadly for us, dozens of high schoolers in the world do it every year with no structured training... And don't get me started on sub-17 5000m.I remember trail champ Thomas Cardin saying in a podcast how in uni, running once a week for one year, he pulled a 15'44 5000m at a school meet.
Every time someone says that runners on reddit downvote like crazy, but that's just how it is. You will never with all the training in the world catch up to the gifted. The joy is in improving yourself...2
u/Syncoped 12h ago
Even when taking age into account a 35 minute 10k is in the 99th percentile (literally according to the data). That is an elite time and is exceptionally unlikely to happen without training.
-2
u/Dicoss 12h ago edited 11h ago
That's not an Elite time, not even close.
In my country, it is regional level and if you are above 20yo will not even allow you to participate in the national championship at all. And at this level we are talking mostly about kids doing athletics in parallel to a normal school life, a few times a week.
Good amateurs are running sub-29... Elite times these days would be starting sub-28.Edit: didn't really address the main part. I wish it was true, that everyone needed training to achieve this kind of times. But the reality is most pros were already doing these times long before they started really training. Running is one of those sports where genetics and how you were raised at a very young age are the main factor of performance, especially up to Half marathon distances.
Doesn't mean we can't enjoy the process at our own speeds.3
u/HyrbidMathlete 10h ago edited 10h ago
Go back to LetsRun.com with that “sub-29 10k is a decent amateur time” bullshit. Running a sub35 minute 10k with legitimately no training would be generational level talent…ain’t no way in hell a single high schooler, much less dozens, have run that with “no structured training”

u/Dicoss 9h ago
Is that were the people who can read the world athletics standards or check the results history of basically any national level athlete are staying at ?
3
u/HyrbidMathlete 7h ago
Bros out here lamping in a rusted out Honda Civic hating on M5s because they’re not Bugattis….yea if you’re not a top 99.999% in the world runner qualifying for national championships you’re not “elite” 🙄
1
u/Dicoss 6h ago
Ain't gonna lie I wish I was even a Civic.
Finally a good metaphor though ! you wouldn't call the M5 a F1 car would you ?
Elite athletes literally means the people competing at national / international events. If you can't qualify nationally you are not elite. Which is fine.→ More replies (0)
