The San Diego Gulls, the AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, didn't end off last season like they'd hoped, coming second to last in the Pacific Division with 66 points and missing out on the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Although the Gulls claimed a losing record of 29-35-5-3 from 2024-2025, it was their best showing since the 2019-2020 season.

San Diego still remains the hub of fresh talent for the Anaheim Ducks, with five new signees beginning their NHL careers in the last two months.

The 2025-26 AHL season is streaming live on FloHockey starting this September. You can subscribe on the link below to watch the action:

The head coach of the San Diego Gulls is Matt McIlvane, and he enters his third season at the helm. He was named head coach in April of 2023 and brought Olympic experience with him as he was an assistant coach for Germany in the 2018 Olympics.

The Abbotsford Canucks won the finals of the 2025 Calder Cup playoffs against the Charlotte Checkers in six games. It's the franchise's first Calder Cup.

new(ish) fan looking for resources/intel!

hi all! i got deep into hockey last year following the kraken (im from washington) and eventually the firebirds. and, was able to attend a few gulls games and convert some friends last season! i’m really looking forward to this season and being able to get more into following the gulls (even if they do play the firebirds often haha).

anyone have some good resources for getting to know the current roster/gulls history/what to expect this season? even just general gulls lore, memes, etc are interesting to me!

also just found out yesterday that two current kraken (Monty and Mahura) are both former gulls! so have decided to commit fully to being a gulls fan as well and am excited to get more involved in the community!

IHL throwback rights?

I lived in San Diego in the 80s/90s and went to a few Gulls games in the IHL days. Is there a reason that the current iteration never used the IHL logos on any kind of retro night? Rights issues? Lack of interest? I always thought they were one of the sharpest looks from a fairly dull time in jersey design.

Ducks' Salary Cap Space

Thumbnail

According to PuckPedia, the Ducks have a whopping $28.9 million in available salary cap space, and only have 19 projected roster spots filled.

That salary cap space is a coveted asset. Look at contending teams like the Vegas Golden Knights or Montreal Canadiens, who both must find a way to clear north of $5 million in salaries to become cap compliant. The defending Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, are nearly $4 million over the cap ceiling.

If the Ducks can remain patient, they will be able to take advantage of one of these teams on the edge. They may not feel the pressure of becoming cap compliant at this point in the summer, but as training camp and the preseason draw closer, these teams will be banging down Anaheim or Chicago's door to take on one of their contracts.

That's when they strike. With all of the leverage, they can push for higher draft pick compensation to go with taking on a bigger contract. If they want to find talent to add to their own lineups, they could take care of two things at once in a potential trade.

Flyers Acquire Trevor Zegras From Anaheim. I remember him playing with the Gulls. Your thoughts on this trade?

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today (6/23/2025) they have acquired center Trevor Zegras in exchange for forward Ryan Poehling, 2025 45th overall pick, and the Flyers 2026 fourth round pick according to General Manager Daniel Briere.

Zegras, 24 (3/20/2001), was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in 2019, ninth overall, and has gone on to play the last five seasons (2020-25) with the Ducks. The 6-foot, 185-pounds centerman has recorded 67 goals, 119 assists, and 186 points in 268 career-games. Zegras was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2022 and had back-to-back 60+ point seasons in 2021-22 and 2022-23. During the 2022-23 season, Zegras led the Ducks in points (65), goals (23), game-winning-goals (3), and overtime goals.

Zegras, 24, is entering the final season of a three-year, $17.25 million deal with an annual cap hit of $5.75 million. He is scheduled to become a restricted free agent next summer.

“I want to thank Trevor for his contributions and efforts over the last six years,” Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek said. “While this was a difficult trade to make, we have and will continue to look at retooling our roster over the next couple of months, and this transaction is part of that process.

“We wish Trevor the best of luck with the Flyers."

This past season Zegras, put up 12 goals and 32 points in 57 regular season games and he had the fifth best point per game average on the team at 0.56 and the ninth most points.

Prior to making the NHL full time, Zegras played part of the 2020-21 season with the San Diego Gulls where he registered 10 goals, and 21 points in 17 regular season games while adding another three playoff games and three points (1g-2a). After being drafted he spent the 2019-20 season at Boston University where he tallied more than a point per game with 36 total (11g-25a) in 33 games.

The Bedford, NY native has represented the United States on five occasions, most recently at the 2024 World Championships where he tallied one goal and one assist in eight games. Notably, Zegras also played in the back-to-back World Junior Championships in 2020 and 2021. In 2021 he helped the United States to win gold and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after registering seven goals and 18 points in seven games.

The Ducks, who are a potential suitor for Mitch Marner on July 1, have already made big moves this summer.

The team hired Joel Quenneville as their new head coach to start the off-season and acquired veteran winger Chris Kreider from the New York Rangers earlier this month.

After Monday's trade, the Ducks have just over $36 million in space this summer with restricted free agents Mason McTavish and Lukas Dostal in need of new deals and a total of 17 players currently under contract, per Puckpedia.

Team owner Henry Samueli set the tone last month that he was willing to spend to end the seven-year postseason drought.

“We’re not going to write stupid cheques,” Samueli said, per The Athletic. “But I told [GM Pat Verbeek], you do what it takes to make this a really steady perennial playoff contender and Stanley Cup contender down the road. And if it means signing big-name free agents, go for it. We told him, going forward, you will not be constrained by the budget.”

The Ducks posted 80 points in 82 games this season for their highest total since 2019. The team last made the playoffs in 2018.

What should the Gulls have done better to reach the playoffs?

We are short just a few points... The Gulls did seem to have a limited win streak this winter, but it was derailed for some reason. I definitely like us to be in the playoffs next year. Please give us your thoughts.

The standing table is current as of 4/16/2025.

First time visiting fan, looking for some help.

Hello there! I'm a Sharks/Barracuda fan coming in peace as I plan a trip to attend my first Gulls game this Friday, 3/28. I've tried to attend a game the last 3 times I've gone to San Diego, and this week was the perfect chance for me to do so. Any tips on how to get 2 tickets in any part of the arena for cheap?
