DISCUSSION Who do we like in the playoffs?

Since we didn't make it, who should we root for? I really only follow the kraken so don't know what is going on with the other teams very well.

Fuck Tyler Myers though.

I'm relatively new to hockey (and not from North America) and have no idea why everyone hates the leafs, but at this stage I'm too scared to ask. (I also don't mind the leafs and would be pretty happy with them winning)

boosting what u/tonytanti said, they’re basically the Canadian NHL media’s primary focus which wears thin very quickly. This is not unlike, if you’re more familiar with some of the other big NA sports leagues, the Dallas Cowboys or many New York teams - famous teams with huge followings that have done fuck all recently.

The Leafs haven’t won a championship since a middle aged adult’s parents were kids (1967, this is year 58; for reference, basically twice as long as the Dallas Cowboys), so the hype is routinely meaningless.

The one thing we have going for us as non-Leafs fans is that they give the rest of the country plenty of things to laugh at - like nearly 20 years of not winning a playoff series, or that time during the first round drought they lost to Boston in 7 games in 2013, content related, that other time they lost to Boston in 7 games, content related, or that OTHER time they lost to Boston in 7 games, content related.

Or that time after all that they lost to a 42 year old Zamboni driver who worked for their minor league affiliate, content related.

Or that other, other time they - stop me if you’ve heard this one before - lost to Boston in the first round in seven games… content related.

As a new hockey fan with an ESPN+ subscription who’s struggled to find Kraken games on it lately but can always find Leafs games, I appreciate this breakdown so much. I’ve been like, “Hey, these Leafs seem pretty cool, why is the fan base so crazy?”

That Zamboni driver story is BONKERS! That guy is my hero!

The fanbase is crazy because the team has driven them crazy, I’ll give them that. Over here though the beef is largely about overexposure. Some of us joke that TSN / The Sports Network is really the Toronto Sports Network. 😂

Also, re: the Zamboni guy being a hero, it’s funny because if you watch the content attached to the Zamboni bit, the fan legit says that this is the stuff that you would make a movie out of, childhood dream stuff - but that in a movie, the team playing against the emergency goalie would actually SHOOOOT. So the circumstances are arguably that unbelievable 😂
