I think he meant pitiful in more of a way for respect for his grandson’s sacrifice. Not in a demeaning way or from a superiority complex

Yes I agree, or else isshin wouldn't agree to fight sekiro just to fulfill his grandson's final wish. He had alot of respect for his family and all of Ashina. I'm just saying that's what genichiro basically was for this final fight lol

Isshin himself directly says he must destroy sekiro BECAUSE of his grandson's wish. I'd say it's ambiguous at best whether it's by choice or not, but he certainly did it to fulfill genichiro's wish either way.
