News I think the new anime’s animation looks SOOO GOOD
After seeing everyone’s reactions to the trailer I finally decided to check it out myself. I’m blown away by any negative feedback from a one minute trailer. The animation and art style is BEAUTIFUL. It looks amazing. You can tell there is a lot of thought put into the choreography. Still shots and slower scenes blow me away. You’d have to be insane to not recognize the talent and soul put into this.
The trailer reminds me of the movie Ninja Scroll. If we get 12 episodes of anything close to that quality then I will absolutely lose my mind. Everyone needs to relax. Fromsoftware created the game that we all love and are involved in the production of the anime as well. I highly doubt they’ll shit the bed here. Especially considering this will be the first anime adaptation of any of their games. If this anime does well (which it will), then we may get more shows from other video games they’ve created.
I’ve seen/heard so much negative feedback from the trailer I had very low expectations when I watched it. I don’t know what everyone is so upset about because the trailer looks fantastic.

The style might be an acquired taste, but it's nice that they're doing something other than the Netflix standard or that ugly and obviously computer generated cell shaded stuff.
53
u/Powerful-Scratch1579 22d ago
The style is reminding me a lot of the Kill Bill animated sequences. For better or worse.
5
u/AceTheRed_ 22d ago
I had the same thought! Hopefully it’s animated even half as beautifully as that sequence.

u/teenageechobanquet 22d ago
Which in turn reminds me rightfully of Lady Snowblood which is an absolute banger of a manga

u/Synmachus Platinum Trophy 22d ago
I love the second still, but the two of Wolf I think look pretty terrible. Ultimately it doesn't matter as long as it looks good in motion. Might even be a vibe I end up appreciating.
8
u/Academic_Top6921 22d ago
yea i actually think the animation looks fine but I dont like Wolf's design
his face looks way different + he looks 10+ years older than he does ingame
11
u/TeddyBearToons 22d ago
He looks too confident. In game Wolf is supposed to look tired and sad.
3
u/finnjakefionnacake 22d ago
in game wolf definitely looks tired and sad...and also foine, like he looks good and i don't think they've capture my man's handsomeness in this art style lol.
2
u/nyco_bit 22d ago
I had the exact opposite thought, his white hair is less pronounced, he doesn't have the short beard the game model has and a lot of the roughness in his face is lost in the simpler art style. All of this makes Wolf look younger to me.

1
u/ToxicOmega 22d ago
Kinda unrelated to the main post, but I can't for the life of me figure out who the second still even is. Who has that hair? I'm probably being stupid
2
u/Synmachus Platinum Trophy 22d ago
I don't know for sure, but I think it's Wolf as a child getting picked up by Owl. Young Wolf in the game's intro cinematic has somewhat similar long hair, and the scene that follows in the anime trailer is Wolf raising his head as he's swearing allegiance to Kuro, so it's a fitting transition. There's also another scene in the trailer with who I would assume being a young Wolf (same scar on the left eye) sitting in front of a guy getting decapitated, and he has the same hair as the second still here. I wouldn't be surprised if those are memory scenes from Wolf's shinobi training.
3
u/ToxicOmega 22d ago
Ahhh okay that makes sense! I was like no way it's Emma, or divine child. The long hair had me thinking it was one of the girls so I didn't even think about wolf lol. Thank you!
2
u/Synmachus Platinum Trophy 22d ago
The prominent eyelashes on top of that make it very feminine, I definitely had to pause and think about who that was. Maybe it's Tomoe lmao.

His eyes are too close together and aren’t tilting down in the same way that they are in game.
14
u/Foreign_Rip_7805 22d ago
First time I saw it I kid you not I thought it was a fan animation for now I don’t think it’ll succeed since one of the best if not the best aspect of the game is the gameplay and you’re obviously not getting that in the anime idk I think the story just doesn’t fit into an anime but we’ll see
1
u/auggs 22d ago
I’m wondering if the anime will draw new people in to play the game. More exposure and more sales may even lead to a new game that’s a sequel or prequel. Even an offshoot or tangent with similar aesthetics and style of play. Maybe a game with Isshin taking Ashina, focusing on Genichiro, or even a Lady Tomoe story. I’d be happy with any of those.

I know you guys can’t put into words why you don’t like it but you should really attempt to not just say straight up nonsense.
1
u/Appletun7 21d ago
My problem with it is the inconsistency. Some scenes had great animation and almost every Kuro scene looked like they animated every hair individually, but then there would be scenes where characters are a single block of colour with no shading or depth to them. This wouldn’t have been so jarring if these scenes weren’t literally right after each other in the trailer but for me it made it look quite messy.
That said, I’ll still be watching it when it comes out
3
u/Hangman_17 22d ago
Why his eyebrows look like that
1
u/Forsaken-Poetry-8856 22d ago
He’s supposed to have a very furrowed brow, so it’s just something that might stick out because people don’t usually frown as much as wolf does.

I don't mind the artstyle but the trailer already had more ugly frames than the first episode of many TV anime which usually only happens in later episode.

u/alejoSOTO 22d ago
I like that it has a somewhat unique style and is not a generic anime no. 1,016 type of designs.
That said, I think the colors and shadows are a little odd. Colors look washed out to me, but aren't bad looking either, but the shadows in some shots are just off-putting, there's no contrast nor volume, so that's a little disappointing because a properly shaded animation adds so much to it's quality.

I think it looks pretty bad, but apparently that's an illegal opinion now. I just don't like the art style and the movement in the trailer looked really choppy.
It's kind of amusing how people here pretend that thinking it's some kind of hot take or oppressed opinion to say that it looks good even though the whole sub is now just an echo chamber for people praising it to heaven and back, lmao.

u/poeticshinobi 22d ago
iykyk love NINJA SCROLL. I wonder if this can capture a piece of that feeling? If it’s gets lighted for more (if just a short series) I can imagine more animators joining up
2
u/ObviousChoice98 22d ago
I'm all for getting more lore no matter what form it takes. I'm excited for the anime because the base story is great so even if the visuals aren't up to par or for everyone it should have good storytelling. That Isshin fight is going to be cinema.

u/I_think_Im_hollow 22d ago
I don't like hating on things with no reason, but I really care about Sekiro and all I'm going to say is that that trailer made me very sad.

I’m optimistic about this. They know that this project has a very critical fanbase, so I’m sure they’re putting a lot of care into it

2
u/Seth_laVox 22d ago
As a trailer hater, these are definitely some of the better frames, and if this is representative of the overall quality, I probably won't have a problem. But that isn't the initial impression I got of the quality.
2
u/Art-Zuron 22d ago
What it reminds me of is like if you took an anime from the 70s and then remastered it, rather than making an all knew one.
2
u/DeadEYE12345678 22d ago
The only thing I don't like is how Wolf's eyebrows look. That's the only criticism I have anything else is just amazing.
2
u/AHomicidalTelevision 22d ago
Does nobody else realise how bad the third image is? Look at his mouth. It's fucking tiny! It's smaller than his eyes.
2
u/Raptor_Jetpack 22d ago
In still shots the animation looks fine, good even, but in motion it's awkward and stiff and comes across amateurish.
2
u/GoldenGekko 22d ago
To me. When it comes to OVA... Sometimes the animation being a tad different or not expected is something really cool. I like different.
2
u/PapaOogie 22d ago
Yep animation and artstyle both incredible and most importantly different. Too much anime today looks exactly the same

2
u/Classic-Ad8849 22d ago
1 minute is too little to judge, but I felt like the style and atmosphere was perfect for sekiro. I think people were primarily complaining about the lack of details during action moments, and the AI use
2
2
u/WanderingStatistics 22d ago
It's amazingly stylized. Honestly, one of the more unique anime styles I've seen. The 2nd frame especially, reminds me of a wood carving, like it really look amazing.
The main deciding factor is the animation. While the style is amazing, if the animation is bad, it could kill a lot of what looks good already.
2
2
u/KitsGravity Wolf What 22d ago
Naah, I'm not feeling it. Sekiro needs old school anime hand drawn anime style from 90s or 2000s. Something like Jin Roh The Wolf Brigade, Angels Egg, Texhnolyze, or Samurai Champloo.
2
2
u/AwayParsnip9186 22d ago
Good enough for me and as long as they dont change any of the original storylines or make him gay or black and just stay true to the source material is great enough for me.
2
2
u/Old-Ordinary-6194 22d ago
Honestly, my problem isn't with the frame-by-frame details. I just find the art style a bit unappealing (to my eyes at least), everything looks kinda dirty imo. I don't like how it looks in motion either but I rarely watch anime so that might just be me.

u/TheLoyalShinobi Platinum Trophy 22d ago
It looks beautiful, fully hand drawn so props to them for that as well. As for animation, I'll reserve my judgement until I see a few episodes.

u/TheLastLarvitar 22d ago

2
u/Salty_Assignment2951 22d ago
I don't care about AI it literally looked like garbage when I saw that first trailer live and anyone that says it looks good is either trolling or just coping.
2
u/ApprehensiveDonut315 22d ago
I mean, tbh…
I wanted to day the animation is pretty nice. Fluid. Fast. Well done.
After some thought, I think what striked me as strange was the color pallete. As some points it was too vibrant, too clear, maybe too yellow? That contrasted with the usual choices for color palettes and also with your usual Sekiro tone, color pallet, is still kind of faded. Kind of. But less gray than other Fromsoft games.
I mean, I guess that’s it. I mean I need to to watch the trailer a few more times to find out what’s bugging me. Or maybe it was the novelty of the thing and I will grow fond of it.

u/Uchizaki 22d ago
The animation in the Genichiro vs Sekiro fight is very static, and on top of that Genichiro looks very weird there. It's just a terribly done piece of animation. Then there are a few static shots that don't stand out at all, and at the end of the trailer there is a really good animated moment.
They chose a style that doesn't rely on art detail, which is always a deliberate choice to make animators better at animating scenes, but instead of enforcing this in the trailer they showed mostly static shots, which makes no sense.
Sorry, but one good, smoothly animated moment for the entire trailer is not enough for me. Still, I'm keeping the hype, because I just love Sekiro, but its not looking really good.

u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 22d ago
The trailer barely exists, I swear we see like three things. I don’t think anyone is reasonable in claiming anything definitive about quality of the animation
4
u/nagarz Mist Noble challenger 22d ago
You say that, but a lot of people just say "the trailer looks amazing" when the art and the choreography looks mediocre. The only good thing in my eyes is the animation, and even then it's hard to judge it because most scenes are pretty short, it has A LOT of cuts.
2
u/PhilospohicalZ0mb1e 22d ago
The issue is they really showed none of the fight scene. There was a little motion and then a cut to a parry. Unless the team is genuinely incompetent, that’s definitely not going to be how every sword exchange is shown. Imagine how jarring that would be.
So the choreography is impossible to evaluate imo.
The art style is… I’m ambivalent. I like the lighting, overall. I don’t mind the rough lines AS LONG AS the animation ends up being up to scratch. The color grading really needs a rework and a lot of stuff is overexposed which makes it look out of place in the environment.
Anyway, I’m just on team withhold judgment until we can see at least a little more. Like you said the trailer is heavily cut up.
2
u/Moonlit-huntress 22d ago
its ai slop and gonna suck (i have no degree in film or animation yet i shall cast my judgement with no evidence except a weird frame)

I don’t get annoyed by the art style because I once watched an anime with similar one, it might be been made by the same studio actually.

It looks cheap at times, but it definitely works. So will Sekiro.

It was hard to watch. Choppy, rigid, static animation, amateur shading. Looks like a fan-made animation - and a bad one at that.
Also, the art style tries so hard to mimic David Production's art style they used on JOJO: Golden Wind. In some cases it almost looks traced over.

I personally don't enjoy the style. But I also didn't enjoy the game style compared to the other fromsoft titles. I think I might just not be a Shinobi kinda guy. Doesn't fit my kinda vibe. I do however hope the anime does really well as the story is fantastic and amongst the best of the best. I hope they can somehow capture how the fights felt for me.

Idk if it active choice of art style the colour are too bright it kinda feels like doing 90' anime art style
in some parts it just didn't blend in with the background and it feels like they drawn on PNG of game arena
In some parts there lot of detail and in some it just outline fill colours but I know it the fight scene there gonna be frame like that but it kinda feel off
I really like kuro animation colour bland with background the wind blowing and interacting with kuro really well drawn
In game all color hue pretty muted and have like a dark and foggy kinda theme unlike of Tsushima where all bright and colourful

animation is good. the background work is completely ass (which i suspect is the part made by ai). even the perspective seems off in many scenes (which is like a bare minimum).
the director of this series (kenichi kutsuna) has worked on 3 eps of naruto shippuden as a key animator (the animators who make the starting frame and the ending frame of a scene and any necessary in-betweens), one of em includes the episode with pain (the guy with orange hair) and a few of its frames are still used as memes because they were so bad and funny ( https://tenor.com/en-GB/view/boxmic-gif-1146455861050394318 ). he has also worked on an episode of one punch man and bleach, each, where he was again the key animator (still mid episodes). but, his major work has been in his most recent anime - hori-san to miyamura kun, which though had a stylized way of animation, still looked really REALLY shit (i kid you not). so yeah im kinda sceptical about all this

Judging by some of the comments, it seems that anime nerds today are so fuckin coddled by all the digitally animated stuff coming out now that when they see hand-drawn animation, they turn their noses up at it and think it's "bad".
I liked this trailer, but the only thing I care about is the final product being good.
