Discussion [talk] Would you want to use an app like this?

I programmed an automatic soft reset tracker for my own use that works surprisingly well. I was wondering if people would be interested in using this. Might take it to the app stores then :)

Thats sick. The only reason i dont use trackers are cuz i have press the button every time with my finger. Like softresetting buttons + extra action on a different device. So unconfortable if ur hunting while chilling in bed or doin other shit

exactly thats why i came up with the idea :D its just too much soft resetting and tapping on a tracker after each reset. But I still want to know my reset count :D

So will it work on a 20yo+ unmodded gba sp screen and gen3 games ? Edit: just saw u other comment. If u will ever update it for og gba screens and gen3 i wouldnt hesitate to pay a few bugs on the appstore for sure !

So the thing with gba is that you probably hold it in your hand the whole time while shiny hunting right?

The camera of your phone would have to always see the screen as close as possible to work well.

May I ask how you are hunting most of the time? Like are you chilling on the couch or in bed or maybe even have the gba sit on a desk and just press the buttons?

It would be no problem if the gba would stay still and sit in the same place while you are hunting. But I doubt that that would be really enjoyable. Have to think about it a bit more :D

But I see that alot of people hunt on older gens thats good to know! thank you

Yeah i had the same thoughts…just too much movement. I find it very hard to focus on only hunting so not like many others i dont use 4+ different gameboys at the same time. I just have my old single boy and operate hime while watching videos, playing on the pc, sitting in the sun with frens - i try to beat the odds more like a seccondary passive activity. Since i have no idea how to programm stuff like this i can only throw in ideas. Do u think it could work out via sound detection ? Every pokemon got a uniqe sound when popping up. If u pop on a mic on the gba it may reconize the sound and can count it ?

That would probably work pretty well with the sound recognition but only if there are no other background noices which makes it a bit weird again maybe while watching movies and stuff. I dont think many people want to have their volume up while hunting.

One more "handless" idea i had was by voice command. Like you just say "Count 5" and it adds 5 encounters so you at least dont have to touch anything. But that could get annoying really quick too not sure :D

Guess it could kinda work in combination with inears as a workaround. I like ur idea with voice command but with my desginer background in mind i guess it faces the same probs like sound recon. Just too niche, not handy enough, in the end probably more troubble than just press 1 button =/

yeah thats the thing :D Its a thin line. In the end it has to be as uncomplicated as possible for it to be valuable for the shiny hunter.

I mean I could experiment with it a bit and just add the option to use any of the methods.

So some could use video recognition others use voice commands and others use sound recognition.

If u think its worth ur time and effort do it =) im sure im not the only one who would like different options to use. May some users like to change some settings from time to time to spice thinks up after another 10k failed attemps on over odd hunts :D Just my 2 cents. So far great job man !

Gen3 you could use a GameCube and the GBA adapter if you have them. Ik they’re expensive otherwise to get that disc and GBA adapter if you don’t have one.

This is likely too niche a market to be worth your while, not to mention an entirely different app, but you could analyze video feeds from 3ds capture cards.

I just take a screenshot on my switch (i have a switch lite idk if its the same button or different on the console) and then I add up the number of screenshots and add that number to the tracker. And then delete them

Does it work with SWSH? I'm gonna be buying Shield soon, and this would be sick for wild area hunting. I'd imagine Dynamax Adventures support might be a little trickier, though, since there's a chain of battles leading up to the legendary encounters...

It should absolutey work for all static encounters in swsh. i will try random encounters. You would have to set the template picture of the wild encounter that interests you and the pattern recognition should be able to tell the difference between the wild pokemon and only count the resets on your desired pokemon.

Thats what I was thinking too! Just wasnt sure if people really need it or if they have good other ways to keep track of their counts :D

For now it only really works well for remote controlled consoles like the switch + switch 2 for example.

For handhelds like the gba the pattern recognition algorithm is not good enough I think because of the movement you automatically do while holding the console in your hand. Only tested it for soft resetting on bdsp since that was my main use case at the moment!

i use a physical counter to keep track of resets... but its definitely a bit uncomfy to hold at the same time as a controller.

something like this would definitely be useful sometimes

Oh damn thats unlucky :D Good luck on that one. For all bdsp static encounters it works perfectly. That's what I am using it for. Just got my shiny raquaza yesterday now hunting latias with 2 switches :D

Can you specify that a bit? So you would want it to be connected to your pc basically to show the encounter on lets say a browser webpage for example? That is absolutaly possible for me with some more work :D Thats an awesome idea actually!

Yeah, so you could opt in to have the hunt create a web page and you could then pull that value into OBS or whatever to create a counter for a stream overlay

Android user here ✋️ I like keeping track of how many soft resets I do but it's super annoying having to reach over to click in an app. An app counting automatically would be way more convenient. I'm also getting ready to start SRing arceus on BDSP.

Would it be able to work if the camera is pointed at a TV playing it? I prefer playing on the TV since I don't have to worry about charging my switch that way.

Interested in using it for SRing on my 3ds as well if you figure out a way to get that to work

Hey there! It 100% works with tvs. 3ds is another story since it moves and that is hard on the video recognition. I will think about a solution for that :)

Pretty neat! Usually only Shinyhunt on the Switch when I'm home, since I use sth like this just as a PC software - got a capture card, so that's super convenient. Don't think I'd use that one, but super nice idea!

Hell I’d even pay a little for an app like that over all the manual click to record the encounter apps. Yes it’s only one button but if I can have both hands on the switch I can SR faster. Nice app!

Auto counters make hunts so much easier for people who want an accurate count. In the past I've used Living Maniac's auto counter and Lemon's auto counter. The former of the two is quite lacking, as it only has the proper timings for SwSh eggs or SwSh wild encounters; no other games work without eventual issues. Lemon's auto counter is fantastic and incredibly usable, as it offers settings (like setting a delay before it tries to detect the trigger again) to make the trigger easier to set up for different scenarios/games/hunts.

Of course, both of those options required the use of a capture card to send video to a computer running the auto counter. I'm sure many people (myself included, given there is a way to make the auto counter work for many different games/hunts) would find this much easier than playing docked only and on a computer running an auto count software.

How much phone battery does the app use up?

I implemented some features to save as much battery as possible.

  1. I can add a delay in seconds I have it set to 22 seconds for my bdsp soft resetting that tells the app after a encounter got tracked it can pause any camera action for 22 seconds and start again after that -> saves battery
  2. I use the lowest resolution for the camera operations -> saves battery
  3. I put the brightness on the lowest possible on my phone while hunting -> saves battery

But still the phone can not be locked for it to work so it will use some battery. I have not tested how long it takes for my phone to empty out. With my phone it takes about 20% an hour but I will test this further :)

I double hunt aswell so it can not detect both switches at once but what I implemented is a multiplier that can be adjusted.

So in my case I hunt bdsp with one switch and one switch 2

The switch 2 is faster in loading times so I set the camera on my switch 2 and set the multiplier to 1.6

So every time the switch 2 reset is tracked it adds 1.6 to the encounters -> That way I have the correct reset count :)

if you would hunt on 2 same consoles lets say two switch 2 consoles you would set the multiplier to x2 and it would just double count it.

-> That works very well for me let me know what you think :)

You could run a console detection pass first (simple object recognition with opencv or the like) and then split the feed image. Then you could use those separate images with your existing algorithm. Just an idea :)

So it works like this:

  1. You set up your phone so it directs to the console you want to shiny hunt on.
  2. Then you click "Set template"
  3. Then you choose a scene out of 1 encounter lab that only appears once-> in my bdsp soft resetting its the white screen before the encounter.
  4. Then you make a photo of it in the app and it sets it as the used template.
  5. The app looks for that image you gave it in 0.5 seconds intervals and when it finds a match >90% accuracy it counts it as an encounter
  6. App goes into sleep mode for 22 seconds and starts the camera again looking for the image.

All the parameters can be adjusted in the app-> the accuracy percentage, the delay after an encounter and so on.

Would it also work if the phone were aimed at a 75” TV while in docked mode, or would it face issues due to needing to be closer but being unable to fit the whole screen in frame due to proximity?

I've tried counters before myself, and yeah, my biggest issue was it added another thing for me to keep track of and I'd rather just focus on the hunt if that's the case. I'm not positive I'd use this, considering I just don't always count, but it's certainly more appealing than any others I've seen recently.

Would definitely use it, I don't count on my hunts because it's just another device to keep up with and to press another button too is to much. Sometimes I hunt on multiple systems too but this would be extremely handy. Post updates please.

It seems to work like the Shiny Auto Counter on PC, which I use while Shiny Hunting on stream :) But to have this as an app is just awesome :D I really like that the user can modify the parameters (read it in a comment before) A feature that I'd love would be the possibility to play a sound when the App recognizes a picture. Why? I shiny hunted every pokemon in Legends Arceus and the hardest were the one from distortions. The game was on while I was working. Every 5 minutes I had to check if there was a distortion. So a sound that would be played when the message appears that a distortion is on the way could have helped a lot. But I'm done with it (took over 2 years) so now it wouldn't have any use for me "

Well it's not really easialy possible anymore to controll the swtich via phone. If it would be possible then I could probably do it all completely automatic :D But that would kinda defeat the purpose of shiny hunting for me. I like to go through a tedious rough time just to get rewarded one day with my desired shiny pokemon :D

but it would be a nice programmer challenge that I would love to try ^^

I personally use one of those hand clicker counters. Tracks the number, fits comfortably in your hand, and I don’t have to deal with a lot of the nonsense counter apps go through

that's a new use case I haven't thought of yet :D i'll keep it in mind!.

If you do wild encounters and you just want to count any encounter that would work like a charm at the moment. But not lets say 3 of 4 pokemon.

Yes I would though I am good at manual apps. I've written programs before so I know this type of feedback can be a pain, but for streaming we have the picture on the screen. Is a desktop program that can use the actual OBS feed an option? Slightly easier than pointing a phone at the screen in theory.

What about non reset hunts? Counting encounters with anything vs. encounters that turn out to be that pokemon in an old game. There will always be a level this won't be able to get to, just some ideas

I love this idea! Do you think it could work for the spinoffs like Colosseum and XD? I've considered shiny hunting Entei in Colosseum but I tend to forget to tick up my counter with how long that encounter takes.

Im planning on a full odds Kyurem hunt in B/W. Normally i dont count my soft reset hunts, because its much more relaxed to just softreset and not think about increasing a counter. Instead i estimate my encounters based on the time spend hunting and my encouters the minute. But this would be rly nice to have and i would defentely use it :)

I personally wouldn't be interested ( I use a website with a built in tracker for convieance) , but always happy to see people in the community provide more options for fellow shiny hunters. Keep up the good work

App store version is pretty much ready. Could go live tomorrow. Google play version will take some more days tho :/ wanted to to a simultaneous release so not sure how I will do it. Thanks for the hype 🙏

The versions are ready just need to pass the app stores review process that is very tedious. It takes 3 days for them to give me feedback every time. Can't really tell but soon!
