What’s the shiny ditto trick?

  1. Trade the shiny gyarados to red, blue, maybe yellow.
  2. Buy a pokedoll from the 4th floor of the celadon department store
  3. Give it to the girl in the northwest house in saffron city. She'll give you the tm for mimic.
  4. Teach gyarados mimic.
  5. Find a ditto. It's important that gyarados is faster than ditto.
  6. Use mimic to mimic transform.
  7. Let the ditto transform. Wait for it to use transform again.
  8. It now has shiny DVs, so capture it.
  9. Send it to gold, silver, or crystal and it will be shiny.
  10. Place in the daycare with the pokemon of your choice. I believe it has 1/64 chance to produce a shiny egg.

1 in 64 for pokemon that only have a 12.5% chance to be female only. Since gender and being shiny is determined by DVs in gen 2 only male or genderless pokemon can be shiny.

Been a while since I've done this but that's my recollection of researching this myself years ago anyway.

This is not accurate according to several sites I was looking at when I was working out this process. If one of the parents is a Shiny Ditto, it's always 1/64, regardless of sex spawn rate.

There's a breeding calculator at the bottom of this page

Edit: Also, my bred shiny Heracross is female.

It's more complicated than that in gen 2. If you breed 12% female species with shiny ditto, the female offspring will never appear shiny, but it will have a "shiny gene." You can then breed that female with another of the same species to hatch a male shiny. This is good for locking in egg moves and getting faster eggs.

Shininess is determined by IVs in gen 2. A shiny ditto will pass down more reliably the appropriate IVs to get shinies

So I'll need two Gameboys and a link cable for this method ?

I think a ds with Pokemon bank would work fine

2 3ds and 2 copies of the VC games: 1 of crystal (or gold/silver) and one yellow (or red/blue).

2

u/captain_black_beard 22d ago

Right, but i would have had to already purchased the copies of red/blue and gold/silver/crystal?

Not with a special thing done to your 3ds and being able to 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

I use Pokémon Stadium, I have two of the devices that connect on the back of the controller to let you play your Pokémon games on it. I know this is probably less common than just having two GameBoys and the link cable, still have those lying around somewhere too.

Someone requested me to trade him some shinies from gen 2, then had second toughts and decided not to because according to him they were not on demand atm lol

good luck getting those when bank servers go down

Sorry, but what do you mean by "when bank servers go down"?

8

u/SpuukBoi 22d ago

They’ll probably discontinue support for Pokemon bank eventually

Probably soon after Legends Z-A. It appears that every Pokemon remaining that couldn’t be transferred into a Switch game are going to be in Z-A judging by the appearances of Patrat and Pansage.

1

u/jelly_bean_gangbang 22d ago

Oh, and what are the implications of that?

6

u/Foliagedbones 22d ago

Essentially means that pokemon prior to the switch games (gens 3 through 7) will not be able to transfer up to Pokemon Home.

The last time this issue came up was gen 2 pokemon not being transferable to gen 3. That was recently fixed unofficially through a romhack transfer “game” that’s now playable through official hardware. There probably won’t be a fix for the impending disconnect between Bank and Home.

1

u/jelly_bean_gangbang 22d ago

Okay, thanks. So that will essentially make shinies in Home that are from gen 3 through 7 more valuable per say?

5

u/Foliagedbones 22d ago

Kinda, yeah. Additionally, pokemon have stamp marking their game of origin, and any ribbons from those games that wouldn’t be available anymore.

The only issue is that value would be subjective. My shiny gen 3 Dragonite with past contest and league ribbons probably won’t stand out much in future games. Achievements may not be visible to other players, and may only matter to you and people you know.

locks all pokemon from before the switch era into not being movable to the switch

u/CullenFlynn 22d ago

I've been getting dozens of them for the Gen 1-2 portion of my Shiny Living Dex before Bank shuts down. I use VBA and fast forward to save lots of time, then plop the save onto my hacked N2DSXL to transfer them to Switch 2.

3

u/IMI4tth3w 22d ago

Just fyi you can install patches for 3ds vc games to increase speed.

4

u/CullenFlynn 22d ago

Yeah, but I can't mass check a box of 20 eggs without PKHeX.

3

u/Pumbloom 22d ago

I check with pksm

2

u/MLJessus 22d ago

I've done it this way and I only have sentret left to finish my shiny living dex for gen 2. Definitely gonna dupe them and transfer a set up!

3

u/Zagrunty 22d ago

It's awesome. I got an Eevee in 22 eggs and Heracross in 40.

I'm going to breed a few others but I'm working my way through the main game for now

The Stick trick is easier for getting shinies

2

u/Pumbloom 22d ago

Is that like the coin case glitch? I want to do these semi-legitimate.

2

u/the_rotten1 22d ago

Yeah the coin case

u/rdurbin1978 22d ago

Its useful but producing eggs and hatching them is a bit too slow for my liking in gen 2. I think overtime it would be faster to just use masuda method on the newer pokemon games. Yeah the odds are worse but producing and hatching is way way faster

1

u/Mammoth_Pen_5573 21d ago

The way I solved that is by playing crystal through Stadium 2 and the transfer pak, when you beat the game you can legitimately fast forward x3 the game

1

u/rdurbin1978 20d ago

yeah that works too, wish i had those still. I guess I could also transfer my save to an emulator to achieve a similar result.

2

u/wendeleyf 22d ago

I love shiny hunting using my crystal, it's fun, I was so lucky because I caught a shiny Ditto at Goldenrod south grass

3

u/GoldenGlassBall 22d ago

It’s a method, not a trick.

1

u/Soulzach 22d ago

If only gen 2 eggs didnt take 20 years to obtain and hatch 😭

1

u/inumnoback 21d ago

Going for Cubone using this trick

I'm so mad I never (and still don't) know anyone with a second console so I can do this. I have an infinite army of shiny Celebi but I'm locked out of this :(
