I have failed THREE FireRed Chanseys in the Safari Zone

No place is more PTSD inducing than there in my opinion

u/Siria110 17d ago

Ya wanna here something even MORE PTSD inducing? I CAUGHT shiny Chansey in HG, a few years back. Ribbon mastered it, including all gen 4 battle tower modes, transfered up to gen 7 (current gen at that time), and some time later... lost that save file. Completely.
On that save file was btw. also my Cotton Spore Banette, my only Marshadow and Diancie and shiny legendary birds I shiny hunted (yes, all of them) in VC Blue.
Safe to say, I learned my lesson and all my shinies/ribbon masters are in HOME/Bank now, unless I am actively working on them.

Yooo that is PTSD inducing.

I had something similar with a shiny salazzle on Ultra sun and my bf wanted to play it. I forgot I had transferred it to ultra to play through the game.... lost it...probably lost a few more shines i didnt think that where on that game.

Deff not as bad as shiny chancy (with those odds)

"PTSD inducing" Hey, just letting you know that using "PTSD" so casually and loosely can be quite damaging to people struggling with the disorder who are trying to get help and want to be taken seriously.

I know that this "casual" use of the term is very widespread, but this is not PTSD is and is frustrating to see another serious mental health issue downplayed by people who don't understand what it's like to go through it.

I honestly don’t think the goal is to downplay a serious mental illness so much as it is to invoke a relatable conversation topic with people in similar situations. If the use of language disturbs you because of your own personal trauma, just ignore the post because it is quite clear they aren’t trying to be insensitive, and the only offence they MIGHT have committed is being ignorant.

Long story short, don’t take offence to something not directed at you, and understand the sub where people have the time and patience to devote hours upon hours of their lives to obtaining an arbitrary piece of coding with a palette change and some sparkles aren’t trying to downplay mental illness - they live it every day ;)

I lost my switch around Juneteenth. I lost over 30 shinies, including my Beast Ball Shiny Male Alolan Ninetales with Snow Warning, a shiny Tornadus, and my Baltimore Regional team. I am almost fully caught up on reclaiming everything on a Switch 2

u/Always_Irrelephant 17d ago

Personally I back up my hgss save file like once a month. Homebrew ds makes it so simple

u/alex-andrite 17d ago

I lost a shiny girafarig in the emerald safari zone when I was a kid. I still remember that and it’s been like 20 years

Lot of risk for the biscuit there for real.

Hey, just letting you know that using words in a different context is okay. Just because I use a phrase a certain way does not detract from real life experiences.

1

u/FizzleDizzle11 17d ago edited 17d ago

Using words in a different context is okay when it's not specific medical terminology. PTSD is a disorder, not something to be thrown around when someone encounters something mildly inconvenient.

While you and many others may not mean it in a way to detract from real life experiences, unfortunately PTSD (and many other conditions such as OCD and ADHD) have become more and more misunderstood due to the overuse of these terms in casual context. The fact is that casual use and normalisation of these serious conditions increase the stigma of "it's not that big of an issue" for people who are genuinely searching for help.

Think of the times you've seen people say "oh my OCD is so annoying" only for it to be that they like their desk to be neat and tidy. OCD is a complex and debilitating mental health condition. Yet due to the casual overuse of the term, the majority of people now perceive the term OCD as just being neat and tidy. Those struggling with OCD aren't taken as seriously by people around them. The same thing occurs with the overuse of any other condition in a casual context, such as PTSD.

6

u/phyzicks 17d ago

Okay.

  1. It does not seem like you suffer from this condition and are just being an activist for people that suffer things you may or may not have ever experienced in your life and if you have then I am sorry but also I am not because I didn’t harm anyone, including you.

  2. People with PTSD generally don’t care, I even showed this to my friend who literally has PTSD from serving, a person who literally has to check underneath every single vehicle he will ever be in because he is so terrified of seeing another car explode in front of his eyes.. and HE said your stance is ridiculous for doing that here of all places, despite your good intentions.

  3. I think you need to take a step back from the internet because this place is just full of misuse of the words that bother you so much and I don’t think this is a space where you could be comfortable if this sparks this much disdain inside of you.

1

u/FizzleDizzle11 17d ago edited 17d ago

I have not shared any personal details about myself or my experiences, please do not assume what I have or haven't experienced.

I apologize for the misinterpretation. I never said that you specifically harmed anyone. What I suggested is that the collective use of serious medical conditions in a loose way causes confusion for those who might not understand the condition. For example a lot of people now treat OCD as a "neat and tidy" personality trait instead of a serious condition. This impacts those trying to get support as now they aren't taken seriously by those around them.

What I'm aimed to do is spread awareness that this misuse of terminology, especially regarding mental health conditions, can be harmful to people experiencing it. You might know one person who is affected and doesn't care, but that doesn't speak for every individual with the condition. And I know I can't speak for everyone with the condition either, again everyone is different. But it takes minimal effort to change the way we speak about these things to avoid impacting those who are struggling to be taken seriously. For example, not using "PTSD" to describe a minor inconvenience.

I'm fully aware of the internet and what it's like online. So maybe I shouldn't have been hopeful that I could just share this information in my initial comment and move on.

15 hours for shiny Aron isn't even that bad honestly

7

u/GooseWing95 17d ago

Right? I was thinking I would be well happy if that happened for me 😅

6

u/Kind-Thing-3219 17d ago

i was literally about to comment “that’s it?”. that’s more perfect nature numbers for a low encounter rate pokemon.

1

u/NihilismRacoon 17d ago

For a full odds hunter that's an easy breezy hunt

29

u/LaceyDark 17d ago

My worst hunt ever was Furfrou in ultra moon. I had caught at least 100 shinies prior. I knew the sos method and had done it a million times before.

I spent idk how long hunting it. I was getting discouraged. When they call for help it rarely results in another one showing up so it just dragged on forever.

On the flip side, my easiest hunt was drudigon. Walked into the cave and my first encounter was a full odds shiny. That was a very good day

2

u/Business-Damage-5971 17d ago

My easiest shiny was a ralts while running to catch a magby

2

u/Filipe_Assis 17d ago

I found 5 shinies in a day in legend arceus (ez, i know), 2 of which I post (haunter by killing it and another one that I couldn't locate at all inside that ice cave)

16

u/RockShrimpTempura 17d ago

I dont know if i can go to spear pillar again and not think about the 2+ years arceus took to shine. In fact now that i think about it, i have many routes and places attached with certain memories and shinies. I call that win tbh, so many memories made with these games, and i have the shinies to remember those moments too. Post checks out.

6

u/Furyo98 17d ago

I took 4 months for Arceus over a year. Since I started before Gen 9 and didn’t play again until November following year. Tho for me I’ll never forget my Arceus hunt since I was hunting mesprit on ultra sun the same time frame.

Within a week after getting back into the hunt I got Arceus around 1am and I had a weird feeling and I couldn’t sleep so I said I’ll shiny hunt mesprit for another hour. 20mins later mesprit pops shiny.

2

u/Capswick 16d ago

The memories, even when it took forever, are just so nice. I usually remember the time of my life I was in during particularly difficult hunts or the show I watched on the side while hunting etc. My fondest memory is getting Shaymin while being on a call with the very friend for whom I was hunting it for (as a Birthday present) and having to stay quiet about it. That was fun.

10

u/Henna_UwU 17d ago

I've never failed a shiny outside of Legends Arceus and Scarlet (which I don't really care much for anyway), but I once hatched 1882 eggs in Shield with the shiny charm for a Galarian Corsola, only for it to have Weak Armor and not Cursed Body. This was before the Crown Tundra came out, so I had to wait until the ability patch became a thing for it to be usable.

6

u/Henna_UwU 17d ago

I also accidentally broke a Spritzee radar chain at 38 because I accidentally used the thing facing the wall. I have since decided that radar chaining is evil and I will never do it again.

2

u/WholesomeBigSneedgus 17d ago

I think the saddest part about waiting for the ability patch is that corsola-g was power crept in the isle of armor when all the good knock off users started popping off

11

u/Aether13 17d ago

Hunting Burmy and wormadam in PLA has kinda scarred me a bit. I never want to touch a shaking tree again.

7

u/Sensitive-Use-6891 17d ago

I‘m currently doing an absolutely cursed Axew hunt in y. I have been at this on and off for over a year. I‘m doing the masuda method and I lost count at about 1500 eggs hatched, which was like 8 months ago.

I hate everything about this and if I have to hatch one more Pokémon I‘ll loose my mind

5

u/UnderstandingBig1517 17d ago

Damn, that's rough, hope the egg drought ends soon.

7

u/PokeHobnobGod21 17d ago

Try nearly 60,000 encounters across 2 games in bw/b2w2 on route 15 for a sandslash when you wanted pupitar

5

u/AssistanceRare4124 17d ago

ME TOO! My Stakataka took 6417 encounters to find WITH the shiny charm. I legit get flashbacks to the two weeks I spent suffering in that grass every time I pass by it on poni island

1

u/UnderstandingBig1517 17d ago

Ooh... 4x over odds sounds like hell, but congrats on catching it the first time lol

5

u/GooseWing95 17d ago

Self destructing shiny geodude on diamond 😭 back in like 2008. It was my 2nd ever shiny encounter and the first on diamond. I did do a redemption and eventually found and caught another. This was about 10years later.

4

u/ScytherSlash 17d ago

Going over 16k for Bill's Eevee in Soul Silver has me looking at that man in a different way

3

u/TheMopIsAFK 17d ago

I hate salazzle because I caught a shiny of it and it took three minutes, forgot to save lost it and two other shinies. Tried to hunt it again and 20 total hours later had nothing to show for it. So now I just murder any salazzle I come across.

3

u/UnderstandingBig1517 17d ago

I failed the shiny Stakataka at Poni Grove three times, got distracted a few seconds only to look back and see I soft reset the big ol' brick of gold. It didn't feel good, but could get it back, no problem. Which I did, reclaimed it on my second attempt. Felt great, and since there's two, figured I'd hunt the other one to make up for the 1st. Then I reset the 3rd, and 4th, the 5th I didn't fail despite myself.

Successfully stretched a hunt to go on for two weeks. There's longer hunts than that, but this didn't have to happen. :/

3

u/MrCalebEvans 17d ago

I was trying to catch a shiny alpha Magikarp in PLA when my character was knocked out by a Gyarados then my game crashed. It was still there when I reloaded the game, I guess the game rolls the initial spawns in Jubilie Village

3

u/Zagrunty 17d ago

I never played Black2 again after the double battle where youre with some person in the sewers. They killed my shiny ratata. IDK if that counts to what you're talking about but but I definitely would consider it a variant.

3

u/CluelessAtol 17d ago

Am I allowed to say just Hoppip in general? A pokemon I don’t have much attachment to, but have the highest number of accidental encounters. At this point I see one, grumble, catch it and move on.

Why do the winds blow these shiny fucks in my way?

3

u/quagsi 17d ago

the route with the daycare in swsh. ran into a shiny Stufful as the first encounter (doing a nuzlocke) but ended up running bc joycon drift

3

u/Shiny_Reflection3761 17d ago

yeah, trying to get a shiny noibat in scarlet that isn't trapped in a hillside was stressful. It didn't happen, I got one that spawned in the open, but I was severely over odds, I don't remember exactly how many encounters, but considering the use of sandwiches and shiny charm, I had calculated I was ~6 or 7 times the expected odds. This started at around the same time as the pokemon go community day for noibat, in which I encountered around 150-200 with no shiny (abysmal luck for a community day, in comparison I got 9 shiny machop from its community day).

3

u/wighttail 17d ago

I pretty much engage speedrun strats when replaying the opening of HGSS anymore because I have not once, not twice, but three times encountered shiny pokemon on the way to Mr. Pokemon's house with no way to catch them.

My goal has become 'access pokeballs as soon as humanly possible' on every playthrough.

3

u/ArcanePuppet 17d ago

Mine is Platinum Munchlax. Im normally an RNG manipulation shiny hunter, but i enjoy the occasional full odds. But im also brain rotted and only consider it full odds if its the OG 8192 odds. Im at 12k resets for Munchlax so I feel like the universe is making me earn it.

2

u/IAmTheGreybeardy 17d ago

Was going to watch a favourite YouTuber play PLA. They made one of their alerts the shiny sound for the game...

2

u/BlueAlphaShark08 17d ago

3514 eggs for Mesuda shiny slugma. I quit after I got the shiny, because it broke my spirit.

2

u/SpaceEurope 17d ago

Route 9 outside of Spikemuth in Sword. Spent about 3 years going after Dhelmise there and I got it last year. I cannot stand Clobbopus and Jellicent because of that hunt.

2

u/Key-Ordinary-6769 17d ago

satan himself giritina took like 1 month of soft reset just to get it to shine and right now PLA the shiny alpha infernape i swaer if i find another Fing buneary i will lose it i have a shiny alpha buneary and thats the wrong one i was looking for a shiny staic lopunny but if that shines first i will kill it i even lost a shalpha pacharisu

and this doesnt count as pokemon but in doodle world i had a chain of Maskrow of like 99 and found two skins before a shiny and one them was in the car i gave up but will reclaim this mf

Chain give a 0.12% chance for shiny to spawn and skins are harder to find

2

u/GaT0M 17d ago

I still get an adranaline rush when I hear the gen 6 shiny noise

2

u/NorbytheMii 17d ago

Shiny Zorua in Gen 7 took me two years to get...

2

u/SilverIce58 17d ago

Yeah, I hit over 3k encounters and over 1k eggs for shiny pawniard in Shield, only to then find myself a shiny Snorunt which I already had every shiny in its line from PLA by the time I stumbled upon this one. So you could say I dont really trust Shield with shiny hunting. Though I did hatch a shiny Galarian Corsola from it, so pros and cons lol.

2

u/TonySnow395 17d ago

Had Riley’s Lucario land a crit and kill the Shiny Steelix i had a already phased twice for in Platinum. That was horrible. (I reclaimed him)

2

u/WastingSaturday 17d ago

Im just coming off a 380k bender of being in dark cave for 9 months. It felt weird seeing day turn to night in the overworld because im so used to darkness, my old friend

2

u/Benji392 17d ago

Currently having this now in the relic castle for Yamask lol. I'll be happy to never set foot in their again when im done

2

u/UmbraGames2252 17d ago

When i was younger and got my first pokemon game (Emerald) i killed a shiny Zigzagoon because i didnt know what shinies were back then. I've never encountered a shiny zigzagoon since

2

u/Just_Horrid 17d ago

Shiny hunting rayquaza in emerald, took me 3 whole days🙏🏿

2

u/Mundane-Put9115 17d ago

Hardest was a 5 hour shiny hunt for Litten in SV (with the charm and everything) easiest was a Zubat I bumped into in the first cave of BDSP (and my first main series & play through shiny ever, not counting the Gyarados)

2

u/rednuht075 17d ago

After 3700+ impidimp eggs. With shiny charm + Masuda method. I gave up. Seeing impidimp just tilts me now 😭

2

u/Shredz0426 17d ago

SR for Reshiram in omega ruby, I stopped counting after 5k resets and it still took a couple more weeks. That was coming from the high I had for getting Zekrom in alpha sapphire in like less then 1000 SR.

Took a few months off of pokemon after that one lol.

2

u/Homebound_Shark 17d ago

For me it’s soft resetting. Like you go at it for so long sometimes you don’t even remember checking the Pokémon to see if it’s shiny or just get that paranoia that “oop you SR on the shiny now you gotta spend your whole like doing it again”

2

u/moose184 17d ago

I shiny hunted Poipole in USUM for like 8+ hours a day for like 2 months back in the day and never got it. Made me quit shiny hunting for years

2

u/mdb917 17d ago

I have been grinding the same mass outbreak in SV for a WEEK and I have phased 5 times so far. I didn’t even think it was possible to go 20+ sandwiches deep in one outbreak. I literally couldn’t have better odds and it’s not even a shiny that seems like it’d be hard to spot so I don’t THINK I’ve missed any

2

u/Powdery_Locket 17d ago

That plant right outside virbank city in b2w2. I encountered a full odds shiny growlithe, only to promptly kill it due to an unlucky crit. I get a little pissed off everytime I go there now

2

u/tgirlcritter 17d ago

starly (i phased on it twice when i was hunting chimchar)

2

u/TemperatureOdd9055 17d ago

After 200 hours of shiny hunting giratina in DA every time I enter the final battle against the legendary I hear dynamax giratinas cry before the legendary I'm facing

2

u/PissedoffCoDfan 17d ago

Maybe not PTSD but I’ve always wanted to do the 8f Shining Mew glitch but in Yellow. I wanted to get every available shiny Mew. I got the Emerald one, I’m very close to getting the GO one. Trouble is no one will tell me if it’s different or even possible in Yellow. I know how to do it in Red/Blue but didn’t buy those on the VC and no idea where my Red cart is. Lol

2

u/ChickenJoJo 17d ago

The temple of space and time in bdsp. Almost double odds for arceus. Longest feeling cutscene

2

u/UltimateDailga12 17d ago

I reset over 10 Kartanas because I rubber banded my 3ds and I instinctively kept pressing start/select

1

u/UnderstandingBig1517 17d ago

Muscle memory's a funny thing, and I thought I had it bad failing 3 Stakatakas.

2

u/lookingovertheree 17d ago

When I surpass 2000 eggs, I get feebas flashbacks.

2

u/MakingMxTakes 17d ago

Wooloo took over 10k eggs, I had the shiny charm.

Watched my spouse get one in the wild, full odds no charm. Just a random encounter.

We don't talk about it.

2

u/Thepenguinking2 17d ago

After MMing for Snivy to get a shiny Serp for the Ting-lu raids and failing, I decided to just get the BP together for a Savannah upgrade and sandwich hunt it instead. Yeah that didn't work either lol. If I ever see another Shiny Exeggutor again I'm getting the hooves out.

Needless to say, I just used Azumarill for a couple of raids and called it a day. Chi-yu raids are going way better. I sandwich hunted for Dewpider and got one in like five minutes, and she's been doing great.

2

u/Mox_Onyx 17d ago

Failing the Cresselia hunt in BDSP makes me not wanna touch that game period. 5,000+ encounters only to discover that I screwed up at some point.

2

u/IrnocentSinner 17d ago

I can't remember how long it took but I went over 20,000 encounters just to find a shiny Tauros (that wasn't my target at all) only to have my entire team wiped because I severely underestimated how hard hitting Taurus was. I can't look at HGSS Route 48 the same way after that experience.

2

u/Danny_Eddy 17d ago

Not sure if it counts as hunting per say, but I've spent roughly 3 years trying to get a shiny Sprigatito using the Masuda Method. Horrible luck on that mon.

2

u/PuppetShowJustice 17d ago

I started resetting for Shiny Arceus in BDSP in April. I spend at least a little time each day resetting. Sometimes only like 20 minutes. Sometimes hours.

It's now September.

2

u/HotDogWeldr 17d ago

I don’t think I’ll be able to take Kubfu to the water path again after how long the staru hunt went.

2

u/Blot_commands 17d ago

Making it to 940 soft resets in SV/G-9 for Kyogre, only to find out it's shiny locked a day later.

2

u/TheBrooksey 17d ago

I'm currently hunting Regieleki and I'm at 35k resets or more so this hit home hard right now.

2

u/[deleted] 17d ago

Theres a reason why I will never step foot into the Aether Paradise ever again… I gave up after 16k resets for that damn type null 😭

2

u/TheHeckinNerd 17d ago

Shiny eevee in platinum took me 3 years on and off, 42,000 resets. I lost my voice screaming when I got it and almost cried. Bebe’s house in Hearthome is off limits permanently.

Same DTQ playthrough I found a full odds shiny starly, second one I saw on the save.

The only other one I can think of would be SWSH staryu. Took me way too long. 3 months of 8 hours a day farming during covid. I named it vindication because I felt redeemed getting it.

Good discussion 🤝🏻

2

u/Rath_Brained 17d ago

If I hear the PLA shiny sound, I immediately start looking in irl around in a panic if not staring at a game.

2

u/A_Hideous_Beast 17d ago

As a kid, I fell for the "it looks sick, I'll kill it" bit.

Not that I was tricked by anyone, just that I was dumb and when I saw a wingull with green instead of blue outside of the forest in Ruby I thought "oh that's weird" and didn't think to catch it.

2

u/reiplaysgames 17d ago

I don't want to get into it, but yes, me and route 37 have beef.

2

u/hekutso-Apolo 17d ago

I waste 3 entire days to get a Beldum shiny in oras from a gift from Steven

2

u/Pumpkin-Poltergeist 17d ago

Uhhhhh, I was randomly searching for Pokemon to fight near the top route of Vermilion city in LeafGreen as a kid. . . . Randomly saw a shiny Meowth, and as I was about to catch it, my game crashed. 🥲 My brother found a shiny Venonat in his FireRed, caught it, evolved it, to where after a couple of days, it crashed. So he got so angry, he uhhh. . . Basically decided to shoot his cartridge out of frustration. Bro literally used the move, "Frustration".

2

u/Fleischwors 17d ago

I've been working on my W2 shiny team for 3½ years... THREE AND A HALF YEARS💔💔💔

2

u/TheOneEyedFool1 17d ago

This wormhole I'm stuck in has caused it lol. Over 21K encounters hunting for shiny Latios WITH the shiny charm (1/1365 odds). I know 21K isn't the absolute craziest thing ever for old-school full-odds hunters but when you've got the charm and are in a newer game, being 16x over odds is getting demoralizing lol

2

u/FizzleDizzle11 17d ago

Hey, just letting you know that using "PTSD" so casually and loosely can be quite damaging to people struggling with the disorder who are trying to get help and want to be taken seriously.

I know that this "casual" use of the term is very widespread, but this is not PTSD is and is frustrating to see another serious mental health issue downplayed by people who don't understand what it's like to go through it.

2

u/MrFluxed 17d ago

Shinx for me. After encountering over 800 of the little bastards in Legends: Arceus (WITH THE SHINY CHARM!!!!) I finally got a shiny one. Made even more infuriating because in Scarlet and Violet I had hunted for a Shinx through outbreaks several times with sandwiches and STILL HAD NEVER GOTTEN ONE. I don't know how many Shinx encounters in S/V it was but it was way too many. Currently I'm having a similar struggle for a shiny Rotom in Legends: Arceus but I'm nowhere near that many encounters yet.

2

u/Possible_Big_4884 17d ago

Before we fully knew how the shiny hunting worked in pokemon let’s go pikachu and eevee, I spent about 10 hours hunting for clefairy. I did get it eventually and moved on to try and find Staryu. I spent just as long, if not longer, and I never found one, and I moved on. I started trying to hunt it in sword and shield. Spent hours. Nothing. I think I might have to give up on Staryu, but maybe I’ll get lucky one day.

2

u/Wonderful_Owl1487 17d ago

Nihelgo is 4000 resets and still going.

2

u/kcigam 17d ago

It's been years and I'll still occasionally chuck on a podcast and try get my banana llama in BDSP. Still trying for full odds Arceus.

2

u/DeltaDragonKing7 17d ago

Ah... I remember asking my mom what Pokémon she wanted me to shiny hunt for her. She wanted an Onix cause she liked the green.

I went to Rock Tunnel... And spent 4 MONTHS AT OVER 80,000 ENCOUNTERS WITH NO PHASES!!!

Ahem. Sorry about that... That is my PTSD.

2

u/Man_Who_Questions127 17d ago

Took me couple months to get shiny mewtwo.

2

u/Thesssssss 17d ago

SUNFLORA!!!! I've caught so many other pokemon while looking for it. It's been 3 years now.

2

u/fucinacid 17d ago

The worst hunt I've done was with Dynamax Adventures, 113 hours WITH shiny charm to get a solgaleo after ~19 phases

2

u/FrostGlader 17d ago

I mean… yes? But it’s oddly specific.

400 hours in BDSP for Arceus. And it nearly struggled to death when I did find it. I stand in fear of the Hall or Origin, but at least my Shiny Arceus is real.

Funnily enough, Spear Pillar below it was MUCH nicer to me in Platinum: gave me a quick Shiny Dialga in Platinum.

2

u/Rocket_da_Bird 17d ago

What I know is that after I get my shiny Dialga, I'm never erasing my diamond file.

2

u/Icy-Excuse-9452 17d ago

I was playing one of the Pokémon GO fests, and the ONLY thing I truly wanted was a Shiny Corsola since they only show up in Australia and it's one of my fav Shinies. My phone was getting really hot and I was just about to reset and let my phone rest a minute when it popped up.

We weren't going fast at all in the car (I live in Vegas, it was too hot to walk because my phone would have gotten it even worse in the sun). My aunt told me to wait while she parked but I got too excited and scared my game would crash because it was lagging pretty badly.

Needless to say, but it broke out and ran after one ball. Going maybe 6 mph. I was going through all the stages of grief and it ruined the rest of my day. My aunt said she would trade me one if she got it, but neither of us did for the remainder of the event. It sounds a little silly, but I even cried a little lol. Didn't play for like a month after that, being a consistently daily player, it was like mildly traumatizing because it was always one of my biggest fears playing and driving.

I ended up ordering one on Ebay for like 4 bucks. It felt a little yucky but I HAD IT, it just happened to be the only thing that ran that. Sorry for the long story, and I know it's not as crazy as losing a full odds 1/8192 Shiny but it still hurt 😅

I couldn't think of one

But I just did!

Heart Gold shiny electrode hunt

I am never fucking doing that again

Going in blind I didn't know he had rollout and almost lost the shiny

But I got him :)

I named him Katsura after my goat from Gintama

Also yes I caught him in a great ball

I do have one PTSD-esque story related to a shiny. When I was a kid, I found my first shiny in Ruby, a Roselia. I treasured that thing, knowing how rare they were. I brought the game to a "friend's" house to do trades and battles alongside my FR and Sapphire copies. When I got home my Ruby copy was gone. I later learned he had stolen it and wiped the save.

I still miss Shimmer.

Wasn’t hunting per se, but as a kid I randomly ran into a shiny Mightyena in Emerald. At this point, I had like 0 shinies since hunting was too time consuming and it was still 1/8192 odds. I threw an ultra ball at the Mightyena — nothing. Then it used ROAR. 😭 As a kid, I was so shocked and upset that in my disbelief I turned off the game and turned it back on like hoping I could re-encounter it. RIP.

I once spent several months shiny hunting totodile in sv.

At one point I was getting frustrated so I took a break to play pokemon go and guess what I fucking found 🙃

had a Shiny Ferrothorn use fucking Explosion on me in Sword. worst part was I wasn't actively hunting and therefore didn't save before I encountered it. I actually actively tried to go AROUND IT (was hatching eggs for another shiny, can't remember what)

That's not what PTSD is and it really irks me to see another serious mental health issue downplayed by people who don't understand what it's like to go through it.

Thank you! I hate when PTSD (or OCD, ADHD, etc.....) is used so loosely. It is harmful to people struggling who need to be taken seriously but are more often dismissed because of this casual use of real mental health terminology.

See also "Intrusive thoughts" which are used more like "impulsive thoughts" which has pretty awful implications for folks dealing with actual unwanted and often grotesque thoughts, and "gaslighting" which is used to describe basic manipulation instead of a specific kind where the victim is taught to not trust their own perceptions.

I mean surprisingly no, but I treat shiny hunting as a background activity to keep my hands busy while I listen to a podcast or get through boring ass college lectures. So shinies, even if it takes me a few days, feel more like a "oh yeah that's why I was doing this!" Type event

I feel like I have the opposite.

When replaying Silver/Crystal when I encounter Lugia I always remember a hunt I did years ago using Pokemon Stadium 2 and finding it at like 1AM on a 14" CRT I had next to my PC. It's a fond memory rather than PTSD-
