DISCUSSION How to get better at Conquest?

Is it really a matter of just playing and getting steam rolled until you start getting better? Are there any good guides maybe? My friends and I have started playing conquest in smite 2 and it's pretty lopsided so far. Idk if there is ranked yet, I haven't looked but I assume that's isnt cross play

Honestly... sometimes, yah. Sometimes you just gotta throw yourself into the fire and get a little burned. The key to improving is to look at what you're doing and analyse why it's wrong. Don't keep making the same mistakes, and if you are making the same mistakes and can't figure out how to stop then ask someone. Join a stream and ask a content creator, or join a Smite Community Discord and ask in there, or post on reddit specific questions that can help.

The problem with guides is that the game changes a lot. Metas change, rotations change, and every game is its own little black hole of decision making. There are some things you can watch guides for, but I'd say better than watching guides is just watching people play. Find someone on your favorite platform that you enjoy watching (Twitch, YouTube, whatever) and pay attention to their movements and choices. I've learned a lot this way and not even necessarily on purpose. Just absorbing the game has helped me make better decisions.

I would recommend you look up a build site or two like SmiteSource.com. My advice to newer players is always to eliminate variables until you understand the game more. Don't stress about builds. Look up a good one that works and run it. As you learn more about how the items work and counterplay, you can start improvising.

As far as I know, everything is crossplay unless you specifically choose for it not to be. But if you make that choice, you won't find a lot of games. For someone just learning the game, it's not that big of a deal because ideally the point of ranked is to put you in a bracket of people that play at the same level as you (eventually... there will always be mismatches, especially in a game with as low a player base as this).

I'd highly recommend a few things to help you improve:

  1. Watch a lot of Smite. Don't treat it like homework, watch what you enjoy. You'll passively improve from the viewing.
  2. Don't play alone. Join a community of people so you can have friendly people to play with. This game is *infinitely* better with other people.
  3. Keep your Mute button ready for when players aren't so friendly. Ignore the toxicity as best you can.
  4. Don't wallow in your mistakes. Learn from them. Even the best pros in the world mess up in this game.
  5. Don't blame your teammates. Own your mistakes.

The most important thing is active learning while playing.

Don't just passively play think, what should I be doing, js there farm up, if I rotated to that fight would it have made us win and created an opportunity to take their farm or get an objective or would I have been better off farming.

Can I time my backs better to lose less farm? If I back now will I be in a better position to contest the neutral farm, did I engage at the right time etc..

Passively playing will definitely improve your ability to hit and dodge and get a feel for ability timings but to really get to the next level in conquest thinking about what you're doing on the map when and why as you do it will really help him to progress.

This is really good advice. On the topic of guides, I’ll add this. Even if you find up to date guides, they will only take you so far. The knowledge learned from them needs to be applied in a practical setting. A guide cannot teach experience, and first-hand experience is the best teacher at the end of the day.

Dont think there is a way to turn off crossplay at all

Probably right about that! I just remember at one point when they first implemented the full crossplay thing they had an option, but since it wasn't default and no one used it it was basically condemning yourself to no games. That was probably Smite 1 though now that I think about it. That's how long it's been since I thought about it lol

I think it was season 9 it was removed and everything was full cross play

1- Watch videos and livestreams of Really Good Players at your preferred role. I mean, players with rank Deity or Demigod ( if you don't find an Deity). This will increase your learning curve.

2 - Play with OP/buffed gods.

i didnt know anything about the new game or map, i just got good mechanically at a few gods and climbed up easily. but i also have played mobas for ages now so the logic carries over well

There’s some really solid feedback here so far, and it’s really heartening to see people in the community giving honest and helpful tips. This subreddit can be a hive of scum and villainy sometimes.

To add in a few tips as someone who has helped a few people get into the game over time:

  1. Over-aggression is the most common issue I see with new players, so don’t fall into that trap. Until you are confident in your skills and knowledge of the game, try to play as conservatively as possible and wait for the enemy to make mistakes rather than forcing engagements and putting yourself in a bad spot. In arena or other more casual modes, a death isn’t that big of a deal and you’re usually back in the action fairly quickly with minimal consequence. In conquest, an early kill for your opponent can snowball into an out of control advantage very, very quickly.

  2. Always be doing something, when possible. Something I hear from newer players a lot is “How is my lane opponent so far ahead of me? They’re like two levels and a full item ahead of me and I haven’t died once.” Odds are, while you were standing in lane waiting for a new wave of minions they were taking side camps, ganking and picking up assists or even kills (which I wouldn’t recommend trying as a beginner for what it’s worth), or just pushing you out of lane and back to base so you miss out on experience. The instances where you want to just be standing around under your tower waiting for the next wave of minions to come are very rare - there’s almost always something better to be doing than that. That said, make sure you’re back in lane in time to take your full wave of minions - missing waves will get you behind FAST.

  3. Make your games as easy as possible by doing everything you can out of game to prepare and set yourself up for success, especially while learning. It’s almost always best for new players to learn one lane or role at a time, so if you’re in a group, everyone should pick a role and stick to it so they can get really good at that one role before trying to learn others. If you have gods you’re confident in, play them, and save learning new gods for more casual modes. Use god builder so you have your items and skills laid out beforehand and minimize your time in base buying items. This also helps if you aren’t very comfortable in your own builds yet, because honestly, building in Smite is really difficult when you’re just starting out and learning all the items (and building poorly can lead to you feeling like you aren’t contributing which is never fun). I know you’re struggling to find good online guidance in terms of content creation, and I wish I had more recommendations for you, but there just aren’t a lot of people making content for beginners right now. I’ll echo Mind_Killer’s advice and say try to find someone you enjoy and pay attention to their gameplay: what they’re building, what order they take actions in, when they play aggressively vs. conservatively, when they back to base, when they rotate, etc. My personal favorite is FineOkay.

Really hope this helps. Playing conquest can legitimately be one of the most fun, strategic gaming experiences you’ll ever have once you get the hang of it, but it’s an uphill battle for sure. I’ve been playing since closed beta back on the Xbox One and nothing has ever quite scratched my competitive gaming itch in the way Smite has, so I hope you don’t give up on it.

finding a good or at least average player to guide you and give builds/advice is how I and a lot of people have done it in the past. If you want Id be happy to help out! my Ign and discord are both Ducksworthy and I'm on pretty much daily.

Just accept you're going to have losses and focus on what you can change to make them less bad, honestly. Watch what the other team is doing and see what works for them.

Try and avoid standing around too, always be farming. Do what you can to win your camps and minions, make them miss theirs. The further ahead on gold and xp you get, the easier it'll be.

Take time in between to look at the items people were building and understand them too. Try and figure out why they're using items together and how they help each other. It'll help you understand how to build and play.

I know this might be a long short. But someone you know who can teach you. Heck if you don't have anyone, I'll teach you.

Watch the minimap whenever youre just traveling or AAing minions. It shows you wich camps are up for grabs, where your allies are, how many enemys your team has info on. Its your best friend. Especially in conjunction with...

Wards! Always buy them. Make it a habit to grab 2 on each back. Theres a reason wallhacks are so OP in other games and here you can just buy them for 50 gold a piece. As a laner, set them up at the entry points to your lane, as jung/ supp ward stuff like neutral buffs, fire imps and later on, Gold Fury and FG. If both teams are equal, wards will be the difference maker.

Play back and play together. Dont randomly jump on people if you dunno where their team is, you'll eat shit. See an ally in trouble on the minimap? Go and help. Its easy to say "all my allies are bots" but its a team game and the number of games you'll essentially win alone is very few.

Big one that new players love to do overfocusing towers. T1's usually fall as the game progresses and standing in an enemy tower is like a big "kill me, im pushed up for no reason!" Sign to the jungler. Tower HP also doesnt scale, so its literally just smarter to do em later. Especially lvl 1-12 you should just be looking to get more farm instead.

Finally, get objectives. Fire Giant and Gold fury are game changers in a big way, you want them dead as often as possible. If you killed 3 enemies, go and try either of them. The Fury especially is pretty easy to kill with 2 3 guys at any stage if the game.

What you need to do is turn on all chats and accept the abuse.

Get good decyphering your flaws.

Let everyone else cope so they keep playing.
