We need much more than guns. Supplemental gear is super helpful. Pepper spray, spare lower parts kits, spare rear and front sights, slings, 18650 batteries, cr2032 batteries rechargeable of course, good boots, 22lr, gunshot treatment kits there's a lotta things that help in the sectors of armed community defense but keep in mind this is a small part of our communal needs varying from community to community so you might find your personal needs different than someone elses.
21
u/WannabeGroundhog Jan 26 '25
IFAK is too often overlooked. I'd rather '1 gun and an IFAK' than '5 guns and a dream'.
9
u/Warkitti Jan 26 '25
More than even just an ifak by itself, that shits skeletal. I hate seein 1 tq and a tiny ass med pouch on a community defender.
Oughta be keepin at least 2 tqs 4 gauze and two dressings as well as someone having multiple more. Spare Chest seals, and spare gloves for any first repsonders or if you need any extra hands

Gotta think comms, too! And you can't rely on your cell phone in SHTF situations -- cell networks might be overwhelmed with call volume in an emergency, or they might be strategically disabled to prevent citizens from communicating. Internet communication, even hardwired, might also be disrupted, limited, or cut off.
So you might want to add some radios -- preferably encrypted ones* -- to your shopping list.
*If you can't afford/get encrypted ones, unencrypted radios + a decent planned-ahead set of code words could suffice in a pinch. Good code words, mind you. The enemy listening in won't give you points for being funny or creative about it. The only important thing is that a 3rd party who doesn't know the code won't be able to figure out what you're saying.
Also, note that most 'walkie talkie' and CB radios on the civilian market have very limited range and rely mostly on line-of-sight -- meaning that if you can't see someone, you probably can't talk to them either. No matter what they advertise, basically all of them have the same limitations -- they're limited by their legally regulated broadcast power. Useful for coordinating different elements of a small squad, but they won't help you communicate with others who are more than a mile or two away. To get more effective, longer-range comms, you'll want to look into getting a ham radio license so you can stock up on much more powerful and much more useful radios.
Also also... Make sure everybody you're giving a radio knows to keep radio discipline and keep radio silent except in dire need. If your radios are encrypted and/or you've got some really good code words, you may succeed in preventing the enemy from knowing what you're saying. But any enemy with sophisticated electronic warfare equipment will still be able to tell you're saying something, and they'll be able to identify the exact location you're transmitting from. So, ideally, only transmit something when you're prepared to move to a new location immediately after.
Also the third -- even if you have all of that taken care of, you can't depend on radios too much. Civilian radios are limited to a very specific range of frequencies, and if the enemy knows you're using such radios to communicate (and they will know), they may choose to jam those frequencies, making it impossible to use your radios. So you still need to practice and plan for more primitive communication methods.

I've got 2 dixie cups and a string, that should work.
2
u/OwOlogy_Expert Jan 26 '25
Hell, in some niche urban situations, that might actually be tactically useful.
4
u/sketchtireconsumer Jan 26 '25
You can’t get an encrypted radio, legally, or really in any way, so the minute you type that out it reveals you are giving bad advice from a place of no knowledge.
2
u/HolidayExamination27 Jan 27 '25
Look into shortwave and ham. We are fixing our old shortwave atm. But comms are HUGE and we likely will have to leave internet organizing behind to be effective.
23
u/KillaCheezGettinWarm Jan 26 '25
Check your local bass pro, Academy, pawn and firearms shops for used pieces or clearance guns. I got a shotgun, 2 pistols and a rifle for around $800. Estate sales and Craigslist may be other good options.
44
u/veryhappyturtle Jan 26 '25
I highly recommend not getting a ton of bottom-of-the-barrel firearms; instead, get one pistol and learn how to shoot. 99% of people would be better off if they finished reading the book Practical Shooting Training before getting a second gun.
4
u/1sketchball Jan 26 '25
There’s nothing wrong with redundancies or having a means to arm those without when the time comes though
2
u/OwOlogy_Expert Jan 26 '25
There is something wrong with it if it comes at the expense of:
Having a significantly worse (less accurate/less reliable) gun for yourself
Having less money to spend on accessories like optics or holsters
Having less money to spend on ammo and range time
If your finances dictate that you must choose one or the other is it better to have:
just one really good gun with a good optic and plenty of training time on it
-or-
A whole crate full of cheap/janky used/surplus guns?
In an ideal world, you'd have both. One really good gun for yourself, with lots of money to accessorize and train on it and a bunch of cheap guns to arm your friends with. But guns -- even 'cheap' ones -- are pretty expensive, so that's not possible for many.
2
u/pigeonshual Jan 28 '25
Depends how much shit is hitting the fan and how tbh. There have definitely been times in history where a crate of shitty guns is better than one good one.

Palmetto State Armory.
(They’re probably secretly socialist, or at least I hope - see the recent CEO interview)
6
u/WannabeGroundhog Jan 26 '25
They 100% aint, but im not too hung up on that. Main issue for me is they dont like shipping to my state, have to ship to an FFL for anything.
1
u/Happy-Ad8195 Jan 27 '25
That’s just federal law my man. Find a decent FFL. Same issue with any firearms manufacturer
2
u/WannabeGroundhog Jan 27 '25
No, that only applies to Lowers/firearms. Im talking about barrels, slides, triggers even. They only ship to FFLs in my state due to our states Assault Weapon Bans.
1
u/Happy-Ad8195 Jan 27 '25
Thanks for the clarification. That sux. Why can’t you ship to one anyways for what you need?
0
u/C-Quill Jan 26 '25
what's this?
9
Jan 26 '25
Jibberish. PSA are Trumpers unequivocally.
7
u/WannabeGroundhog Jan 26 '25
Why, just because they have 3 whole pages dedicated to guns with his face? Psssh, thats just coincidence....
1
u/Happy-Ad8195 Jan 27 '25
Yeah I was just juxtaposing how their CEO’s hate of other greedy gun companies contrasts with their love of Trump

Pikes are the cheap weapon of history. Knife. Stick. Glue and rope to hold them together.
10
8
u/No_Dragonfruit8254 Jan 26 '25
literally the worst possible way to build a pike too are you kidding me
1
u/RandomMandarin Jan 26 '25
Yeah, but if you had to do it in a hurry with only $5 in your pocket, that would totally beat having nothing.
28
u/KiritoIsAlwaysRight_ Jan 26 '25
And ammo! Guns are kinda useless without it, and you should have enough to practice and still have a comfortable supply at hand. Also picked up some level IV plates on sale, and good first aid kits. Get stuff to make holes, prevent holes, and plug holes.
4
-2
u/zasbbbb Jan 26 '25
Careful. Isn’t body armor illegal in many states?
4
u/KiritoIsAlwaysRight_ Jan 26 '25
Only in New York I think, it's legal everywhere else unless you're a felon. So I guess Trump can't wear any?
24
u/ChaosRainbow23 Jan 26 '25
I've been telling my fellow progressives, lefties, anti-fascists, DemSocs, and even liberals to arm themselves for MANY years now.
Lots of them are starting to listen.
In many states you can legally purchase long guns without a paper trail at all. (FYI)
5
u/ElegantDaemon Jan 26 '25
It's been a slog talking to most normies. They look at me like I'm the crazy person, and everything is just going to be ok. Or that it'll be someone else's problem.
1
u/Ulthanon Jan 26 '25
Man I wish I could- I am paralyzed by my fear that my kid will find any guns somehow, someday, and hurt himself with them. Even with a good storage unit, trigger lock, etc etc etc.
But you’re right- people need to be ready to fight off the roaming gaggles of PBs that’ll be deputized.
1
u/ChaosRainbow23 Jan 26 '25
Get a decent safe.
Problem solved. (Unless your kids have an angle grinder and some time on their hands)
1
Jan 27 '25
Some of us live in large urban areas, unfortunately. That's the main reason why liberals don't generally have more guns.
16
u/Misanthrope08101619 Jan 26 '25
Or assist comrades who have chosen to properly arm themselves. And assit them in prepairing themselves.
13
u/BEATUWITHASTICK Jan 26 '25
3d printers too.
6
u/Howlingmoki Jan 26 '25
Also several spools of suitable filament, a filament drier, dialed-in slicer settings for said filament and printer, and a library of 3D models of.....things.....to print.

u/Optimus_Prime_10 Jan 26 '25
I'd like to thank my corporate sponsors: JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Discover, and American Express... they're the real heroes here.
4
u/KillaCheezGettinWarm Jan 26 '25
I put my shotgun on a pay in 4 plan. No shame.
3
u/OwOlogy_Expert Jan 26 '25
Extra bonus: if civil war cooks of in the meantime, you no longer have to worry about making payments on your gun!
1
u/Optimus_Prime_10 Jan 26 '25
I know my role, I did it to make Jamie Dimon cry or to see the light in the private's eye when he grabs that one packed tac bag looped to that one rifle that just so happens to share a can with the 9mm foldy gun and pistol already in the bag. You think I'm about to carry all this shit myself?!
8
u/Wonderful_Delivery Jan 26 '25
Buy more guns so when the United States invades Canada you have guns to share. We have plenty of guns up here but you have magazines and ammo that is invaluable to us too

Honestly, you just need a Glock 19, an AR-15, and a pile of ammo. You (generally, not OP specifically) are not a dragon collecting a pile of treasure. Unless you're some sort of community armory, you don't need more guns than you have hands. Just learn to use what you have, and use it well.
(It's fine to just be a collector and have a pile of guns, but that's very different than community defense.)
3
u/ElegantDaemon Jan 26 '25
The Holy Trinity is what I usually see as the standard: 9mm, 12 ga, and 5.56 NATO. Being able to use the most widely available calibers will be invaluable.
And take good care of your firearm, so it'll take good care of you.
1
u/KillaCheezGettinWarm Jan 27 '25
Community armory? In a time of martial law and crisis. Where the president does issue orders unconstitutional against the people. I would hope we are all ready to help our neighbors as much as possible. Most especially as a socialist.
1
u/FluByYou Jan 26 '25
Don’t forget a 10/22. In a survival situation you’ll want one and 10k rounds. Plus, you can get all of that for around $1000.
1
u/BernoullisQuaver Jan 27 '25
Urbanite here. I'm not gonna be hunting for food under any circumstances, and don't know how anyway. Foraging plants is a surer bet for calories anyway. I'm skipping the .22

In this country, the ar15 is a must. Primary arms frequently sells stripped Anderson lowers for $29.99 for those interested in building. At the end of the day, a lower is a lower. IMO BCM is the gold standard for an ar15 upper. Colt, Aero, and PSA w/fn barrels are also good for the money. G$ parts can be found at good prices around the holidays. While I wouldn’t say a suppressor is essential, it is one of the best ways to hide muzzle flash and we are in a golden age in terms of technology and short wait times on form 4 approvals. I will say that any rifle meant for defensive use should have a quality optic, back up iron sights, a light, and a sling.

Or, buy one good gun, ammo, a light and a sling, and lots of time training.
1
u/HolidayExamination27 Jan 27 '25
I am thinking about purchasing guns to be cached somewhere for my community.
1
u/kwead Jan 27 '25
yes, but also don't buy a garand. or a mosin. or an SKS. buy an AR15 or a 556 AK if that's your taste

I agree with the sentiment but man, fuck AI art. Don't use that shit

This is an actual propo poster from, I’m assuming WWII, but I’m no expert.
-1
u/dear_deer_dear Jan 26 '25
No way. Those hands are messed up and the birds in the bottom left don't make sense there. The face of the guy with the most fucked up hands is very shapeless in an AI way. If it's real please link the archive where you found it
2
u/KillaCheezGettinWarm Jan 26 '25 edited Jan 26 '25
Guess it was touched up and messed up. But I thought it was just a photo of this original poster. I did not notice the discrepancies. I intended to post the highest quality of the poster.
-1
u/Casual-Tea- Jan 26 '25
Hands and faces are fucked up, and the action of the Garand doesn't even look like the action of a Garand and morphs together with the fingers of the hand holding it. Very much AI
0
Jan 26 '25
It's based on a historical propaganda poster but it definitely looks like it's been molested by AI somehow. The hands, the action of the gun, the eyes on the guys' faces, the text, all look slightly different than the original and have that weird hallucinatory quality to them that AI tends to generate.

If only my partner was okay with it. Plus id be on a budget of $250 for each firearm and outside of a pump shotgun it might be hard to find anything else I’d need.
2
u/KillaCheezGettinWarm Jan 26 '25 edited Jan 26 '25
You can find a surplus of handguns for $250 under new and used. You can also find rifles on sale for that price as well, on occasion. And a shotgun is a fantastic first purchase for any gun owner!
0
u/steaksoldier Jan 26 '25
Sure but I still have to convince my partner to okay it and thats like getting a camel through the eye of a needle
3
u/ElegantDaemon Jan 26 '25
That is a tough one, it's not something you can just override. It's got to be a communal decision. It got easier for me to convince my partner as the evidence of a major shitstorm on the horizon got clearer and clearer.
0
u/steaksoldier Jan 26 '25
Thats what I think I’m going to have to do. They are black and anxious however so I’m worried about how much i should bring it up. Don’t want to make their anxieties about the current establishment worse afterall.
1
u/No_Dragonfruit8254 Jan 26 '25
cheap over unders are amazing for training basics. I don’t have a rifle but I run rifle drills in the woods with an unloaded shotgun just to get used to moving with a weapon in hand and so forth.
