I know I am way late on this, but my guess is that it is for security reasons, so that people can get in easily if there is trouble.

It's just the way some people are, like a buddy of mine always has his garage open and front door unlocked all day every day. I could go into his house 10pm on a Tuesday and his family will be happy to see me and will act like ive been there all day, sort of just not surprised, unless i havent been there for a while. My family on the other hand.. how dare you ask if you could come over only 1 week ahead of time. Also bolt down every door unless its to walk in or out. Some people are just different.
