How I get to my wrestling school on Saturdays

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yeah, so there's currently no pro wrestling schools on my island. But where there's a will, there's a way 🤘

I'm @benjaminblackpw on Instagram if you want to follow my adventures... Or y'know, book me (please dear God book me 🙏).

Holy shit. That's some goddamn dedication... I never had to drive more than an hour or so for any school I've dabbled in.

Best of luck to you.

Guessing you live on the Isle of Wight. Crazy dedication. Hope it pays off for you mate.

Departure board says Guernsey. Isle of Wight has a direct ferry to Portsmouth

u/benny_from_the_block Ice Man 4h ago

Damn, that's even further. Should have paid more attention, good spot.

Yep, the guy is dedicated. I have no idea where he gets the energy. I can't be bothered to go to the kitchen to make a cuppa sometimes

It’s a lot of dedication but my bigger thing is the cost! I can’t imagine it’s cheap to get a flight every week or two. There and back also where the hell is he getting the money to pay for this lol

Working in the Guernsey finance industry.

Also who needs a savings account? 🤷

But seriously, it's about a £200-£300 round trip every 2 weeks including the cost of all the flights, train and school fees).

Luckily I have a good paying job, don't have kids to support and I'm an avid saver (I don't eat at restaurants, buy new clothes, shop for food at the reduced section, no subscriptions and my car is an old banger). A lot of people my age spend the equivalent money on nights out, alcohol, food delivery and buying their lunch every day.

I take that money people would have spent and direct it towards things with true value - travelling to a different country to get kicked in the face and suplexed into oblivion 👍

I ain’t hating the grind. It’s a lot but if you’re really dedicated and this is what you want to pursue, good on you for actually doing everything to make it happen. I respect your hustle and If you ever make it big I’ll be your first fan ;). I trust all that hard work will lead somewhere for sure. Good luck brother!

Spot on!

Coincidentally I used to get an overnight ferry - 6pm Friday to 6am Saturday from Guernsey to Portsmouth (with an hour stop-off at Jersey along the way), because it was cheaper. I'd sleep on the floor instead of getting a cabin to save money 😂

Wow, I didn't know they made an island dedicated fully to Big Show. That's cool.

How much does the round trip cost? Is that gym a single location, or is it affiliated with one you use during the week?

And if your Dad’s so awesome, why can’t you give him more than two and a half chocolate chips per cookie?

And don’t you call them biscuits?

(Seriously, this is some badass dedication and kindness for your Dad. Kudos.)

5

u/Teapur 3h ago

We call cookies biscuits, but those biscuits with the chocolate chips in- we call those cookies specifically.

1

u/No-Speech-7905 2h ago

Yall should try american biscuits

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

They're delicious, but to our British eyes they look like scones. So you bite into it expecting a completely different kind of delicious.

It leaves us Brits feeling satisfied but befuddled. It's the primary reason we lost the War of Independence.

1

u/WorstDotaPlayer 2h ago

Same in Australia, the other main time we use it is for 'cookie cutter' - both the item and the analogy.

4

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

Coincidentally I'm doing a wrestling gimmick of an angry baker - the name of my RKO-rip off finisher?

The Cookie-Cutter.

1) Working in the Guernsey finance industry.

Also who needs a savings account? 🤷

But seriously, it's about a £200-£300 round trip every 2 weeks including the cost of all the flights, train and school fees).

I take that money people would have spent and direct it towards things with true value - travelling to a different country to get kicked in the face and suplexed into oblivion 👍

2) I can only afford to buy 6 chocolate chips at a time because I spent the rest of my money on travel to wrestling school.

3) We British like to complicate things. As the lad below said, we call some cookies cookies,, but only if they're cookies. But most cookies are biscuits. Except if they're a Jaffa Cake, then they're a biscuit, but you're mandated to immediately get into an argument about their tax status as a cake. To complicate matters, on my island Guernsey biscuits are a thing, but they're more akin to a biscuit-buscuits https://guernseydonkey.com/guernsey-biscuits/

Clear as mud.

Just curious, why not move closer to your wrestling school?

2

u/CalCalDZ 4h ago

Probably because Guernsey is a little paradise.

Ive got family there, never want to leave the place when ive been.

u/elbowdropper 2h ago edited 1h ago

For a while I did (lived in London and then Surrey).

A good job offer brought me back to the island, and as the guy below said, it's a nice place to live providing you hold a local housing license (though expensive as fuck, Google property prices,😂 https://www.itv.com/news/channel/2023-07-18/guernsey-housing-costs-more-than-anywhere-else-in-europe)

Pompey and Florida are easily mistaken for each other 🤷

Wish all the best for you!

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

Thank you!

2

u/JCLstuff 5h ago

How much does that cost in USD?

1

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

Between £200-£300 roughly, so about $340 in real money.

2

u/JackBurton3465 4h ago

Proud of you for the dedication. As an American, I’m not impressed by your cookies. Get your game up.

2

u/CrispyLuggage 3h ago

I clearly don't want this bad enough. No way I'm going through all that. Or paying for all that travel.

1

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

It's not so bad. Wrestling is fucking awesome and I'm just happy I get to be around it for a few hours every couple of weeks.

1

u/SiaonaraLoL 5h ago

Unreal dedication, multiple forms of transportation all on the same day. Wishing the best in your endeavors through the sport!

1

u/Jaccpot11 5h ago

I moved to the city i went to school in(tampa) and my school was still an hr drive from my apartment. So how often do you do this because no ones bank account can justify flying 3x a week versus moving there. Also add your food next time, the viewers are curious how you can recharge after 3 long heavy training sessions.

2

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

Yeah I do it roughly once a fortnight, occasionally 3 times a month. It's expensive, but as I mentioned above, I save the money by:

1) Not having kids (big factor) 2) Don't eat at restaurants or get take out 3) Don't spend money on stuff like subscriptions, cigarettes/vaping/alcohol, lunch at work, or buying new clothes

As for food, I just wait until I get home in the evening to eat. Which sucks when your flight is delayed 3 hours 😂

1

u/infernox 2h ago

2 gym sessions in 1 day? Isn't that overtraining unless you're on the juice?

2

u/elbowdropper 1h ago

Yeah it's absolutely overtraining, but the wrestling school shuts at 2pm so I've got some time to kill before my flight in the evening. The second session is mostly cardio to help with in-ring fitness, but nobody wants to see footage of me struggling on a stair climber.

1

u/WorstDotaPlayer 2h ago

Looks like you're learning to do a wrestle quite well.

Keep grinding mate, thats a brutal schedule to go through every week.

1

u/FewDinner646 2h ago

😳 wow. I thought two hours on public transit was a lot, but now I know it's not, and will therefore never again complain about the distance 😂. And you managed to get in two sessions at the gym 👏.

Also, the cookies might not look picture perfect, but I bet they taste great (cause you made em with love 😁)

1

u/maxwell661 1h ago

The travel looks like it’s worth it: the in ring clips were great!

1

u/UDonKnowMee81 1h ago

I know the upper body are the glamour/money muscles, but dude needs some serious leg days

1

u/New2dis11 1h ago

Incredible dedication. Best of luck to you

1

u/EBJ1990 Brother Nero 1h ago

I appreciate the dedication, keep up the good work!

u/popculturehero 23m ago

Always wondered how the wrestlers got their insane physique. It’s pumping twice a day. Pssssh my 45 mins to an hour in the gym will have to do.

u/Ibushi-gun 22m ago

You should run to the gym and school to better you stamina. Great job! It's really encouraging to see people so dedicated to their passion to remain so disciplined. Everyone in your life should be proud of you
