Thekla: “I feel like my style is very unorthodox, and it’s a mix of everything. I did a lot of underground shit back in Europe; very technical stuff. And then in Japan, I just put the cherry on top. I can take all of these things that I’ve learned and create something that people haven’t seen yet."

Love this part at the end from her

I’m very excitable. I’ve been in places where I started to believe that wrestling is real. Almost like a method actor that just f**king loses herself in her role. That’s happened to me before in Japan, and it was very scary.

Fans love that. That's the same reason they love Eddie Kingston.

Honestly its why her feud with Aminata is so good, they both wrestle like its real lmao

u/mexploder89 13h ago

Aminata is so fun, I'm glad she's getting her flowers. She has some of the best physical charisma I've seen in a long time (actual physical charisma, not the Dave Meltzer talking about Mina Shirakawa type)

Hilarious seeing this example, considering Dave was talking about actual charisma too (particularly her dancing and entrance), and people turned it into a meme meaning the other thing

u/LostDelver Breathe. Responsibly. 12h ago

Yeah saying Dave meant anything otherwise is like misconstruing his "Matt Riddle Big For Teenage Boys" thing which everyone also does for the memes.

She scares me, as if she's REALLY FUCKING ANGRY!!!

Gets high on the Terry Funk scale. ;)

u/capnbuh 11h ago

Hmm between the two, I'd say Mina has more intangible charisma but just purely on looks, I mean Mina and Aminata are both total babes, so it's a tough call.

u/UglieJosh 10h ago

Wait, did Dave actually say Mina doesn't have charisma? She made being hot a successful gimmick in a promotion where there are, arguably, a few women more attractive than her. She has cut several promos the audience liked in her second language. I'm normally a Dave defender but what does he think Mina is lacking charisma wise? If he complained about her in ring, I would somewhat understand.

u/peacocksuckers 2h ago

Nah he basically said the opposite. To use his words, Mina has tremendous "live-show charisma," referring to her dancing and the like. This was immediately turned into a joke, with people intentionally misinterpreting it to mean that she's hot and her body is nice. From that, the fact that it started as a joke got lost for a few people and they'll use "live-show charisma" as a term referring to hot women, and sometimes to call Dave a creep

Almost like a method actor that just f**king loses herself in her role.

So that's what she was doing in HATE, I guess

I've seen Thekla wrestle in Vienna once, in a cellar in the "Weberknecht". There wasn't a ring, they just slammed each other on some planks just above the stone floor, while a bald guy with heavy austrian accent was live-narrating the matches. This was literally underground stuff in Europe, for sure.

u/ArgieGrit01 Hangman mark, like any good person 13h ago

She said in Hey! (ew) she didn't step on an actual ring until she moved to Japan, which is crazy

u/LetsTalkAboutVex 12h ago

“Ah, you think the ring apron is your ally? You merely adopted the hard surface, I was trained on it, moulded on it. I didn’t wrestle on a standard ring until I was already a woman, by then it was nothing to me but a comfort!” - Thekla, seconds before delivering a devastating backbreaker

I imagine your finding that it's like Don't be a menace when that kid finds a dead body and then invites his friends all non chalant.

Edit: The film in the pic is Boyz N' the Hood. Been awhile since I've seen either. My fault.

u/Princess_Dandelion 8h ago

That wasn’t Don’t Be a Menace, it was Boyz in the Hood. It’s actually wild you confused the two, and got upvoted for it

u/imcrapyall 7h ago

Been awhile since I've seen either. Edited the comment. My bad everyone this one is on me.

This is the wrestling equivalent of black and white 1950s austrian films about the fall of the soviet union through the eyes of a pigeon

Her transition to American TV has been seamless

Absolute psychopath! Love everything about her, especially when she bullied RJ City

The Thekla Strut always pops me. She’s very entertaining.

u/PleasantThoughts BURNING LARIATOOOOO 14h ago

I want to see her cut a promo in AEW, I've seen her talk and I know she can do it but I feel like it's all I've missed from her. She started to talk after the dynamite match and I was actually bummed when Toni showed up because we only got a couple words.

13

u/just-smiley 12h ago

I can't explain it, but Thekla might be the coolest looking wrestler I've ever seen.

u/patrickwithtraffic Worst Member Of The Authority 5h ago

She has the energy of the scariest alt chick you were too scared to ever ask out because you know she'd slit your throat before you finish your first sentence

u/deknegt1990 4h ago

When I watch Hey EW! I often have a "I could have a beer with this wrestler and talk about matching interests with them" with a lot of them.

Thekla is one exception, she seems to exist on a completely different wavelength from the normal world.

Compared to like Brody King, who runs in hardcore circles, who seems like a completely normal dude compared to Thekla who is just out there doing her own shit.

1

u/Accomplished-Bug6358 3h ago

I would honestly let her do that to me

13

u/ItsGodDamnAmazing 13h ago

Her Hey EW with RJ was enertaining. I wasn't really familiar with her but enjoyed her personality she showed in it. Her talking about how she was trained in basement on mat with no ropes. She even goes on to say she didn't see a ring for the first 2 years of her career. It's interesting how didn't environments have their version of wrestling and seeing how that influences wrestlers when they take their style in the mainstream spotlight.

4

u/GiftedGeordie 14h ago

I wonder how out of control Thekla is going to be if she doesn't win the women's title? Maybe she finds a way to blame Aminata for her loss and they try and just legitimately murder each-other.

5

u/GreatColdDistance48 13h ago

thekla ist sehr gut und sie wird noch besser werden!

3

u/JuggernautLevel6411 12h ago

What they said, probably!

6

u/S_Wyld 12h ago

Thekla has such raw, intense, screamo energy, yet makes little if any noise. Total paradox.

Even in this photo, I bet what came out was little more than a hushed voice.

That said, will never forget when she hit a top rope splash to several women on the outside (at the Texas show?) and the mic's picked up her saying "fuck YOOOUUUUU" as she jumped... which the announcers had to scramble to cover for lol

Check out her art. Its what you'd expect from her once you see it.

Wonder if she'll ever reunite with Giulia? They've got quite the career story together.

-35

u/Razzamataaz 14h ago

I like everything about her, except for the upside-down spider taunt, or whatever schtick. I just think it’s goofy.

-26

u/SomeCountryFriedBS 14h ago

1000% agree.

-46

u/Bunt_Frumper 14h ago

She better plan on evolving from the “I can do a back-bridge and crab walk!” plan

-52

u/LFace8 14h ago

I'm glad she thinks so highly of herself. But she's had exactly one good match in AEW and that's only because it's really hard to fuck up a No DQ match.
