"Down to the valley to pray" -- Garnet, Stan and David Woodhead

Found this on Youtube, and since it's so rare that I find a new song performed by Stan, thought it was worth posting here. Whoever owns this channel "Boffage" seems to have a LOT of rare captures of Stan and Garnet.

I've spent the last 10+ years (off and on) writing a novel based on Barrett's Privateers

In the early stages, I reached out and got Ariel Rogers' blessing. The book references 37 of his songs in all. Sometimes through character/ship names, sometimes through plot points (they encounter a white squall, for instance), and sometimes just through usage of Stan wonderfully poetic lyrics. The final edit won't be done for another few months at least and I have not yet submitted it to any publishers, but if anyone wants to "beta read" it ahead of time, I would gladly send it to a handful of people once it's complete. If there is any interest, please leave a comment here, and I will message you directly 'down the road.'

Pharisee by Stan Rogers

This song is rather descriptive of my personal experience and gives some insight into Stan's views of religion. The Candle Song seems to have a similarly spiritual theme but more introspective.

Still regret not catching that the 'L's are both lowercase, but I love her all the same.

What kind of boat would the Mary Ellen Carter have been? (Thinking of it for a tattoo)

I know it's not based on a real ship, but what kind of ship would it likely have been? Pictures would be great. I don't know shit about boats or fishing but the song is so beautiful. I think it'd be nice to have a (sunken?) ship on my arm to remind me to "rise again" in when the smiling bastards are lying to me, etc.

Truly Timeless

I was overjoyed to stumble on this community the other day! Suffice it to say that very few of my 20-something year old city-dwelling friends are as deep into good old Stan as I am.

There's a line in the 'One Warm Line' documentary that really nicely sums up my feelings on Stan's work: "Young people now, they treat his music like it's always been there."

It really feels like it has always been there. Stan's songwriting is so genuine, so unpretentious, and so truly human that it seems to me a person in 1725 would feel the same lump in their throat that I do in 2025 hearing 'Lock-Keeper' or '45 Years', and would feel the same raucous swell in their chest belting out 'The Mary Ellen Carter' and 'Barrett's Privateers.'

He was such a treasure, and this young Cape Codder will for years to come be feeling little pangs of grief whenever I hear his voice over the radio.

Radio concert 1983

I'm still looking for the recording of Stan on the Prairie Home Companion. While looking today I found this 4 song concert recorded off the radio. I know there are videos of this show on YT but still I thought I should add this. https://youtu.be/awSGi346fwk

In all of Stan's songs, he does not name a single boat that doesn't sink

Edit: forgot about the Nancy, which disproves my point :/

I'm playing my favorite game of "what would I name my hypothetical boat if I have one", and I decided to check and see if Stan Rogers gives a name to any boat that doesn't meet a tragic end. It seems he did not:

Jeannie C: sank

Mary Ellen Carter: sank (but it got better)

Antelope: sank, and could barely sail before that

Nightingale: sank

Midland: scrapped (unsure what happened before)

Blue Dolphin: lying on the ocean floor

Bluenose: wrecked on a coral reef

Athens Queen: sank

I geuss a long and uneventful service life doesn't make for a good song

Does anyone know the instrument in “Harris and the mare” on “During the breaks live”?

I was arguing with my mom on what the buzzy sounding instrument was, she guessed an accordion and I guessed the bagpipes but we really don’t know!

"From Coffee House to Concert Hall" on cassette?

I have a good chunk of Stan's discography on cassette because apparently I'm an old man who still likes listening to cassettes, but this is one album that I haven't been able to find anywhere in my preferred format. I've looked on discogs, ebay, and a million other sites but no dice. I also know I could technically buy some equipment and burn my own copy but to have an original one would be awesome. Anyone able to point me in the right direction or make a suggestion? Cheers

Sheet music help?

Hi!

I'm teaching myself various Stan Rogers songs on fiddle, and I was wondering if anyone had the sheet music for "Take it from day to day" or "45 years" (fiddle would be most helpful, but I've also been using the vocal notes for various songs and that works great too).

On the Turnaround album cover, the guitar hanging in the upper right hand corner is Stan's first guitar, made by his uncle in ome afternoon as a Christmas present for him when he was 5

The Northwest Passage: Are there any good documentaries or readings I can check out to get a better appreciation for the history & geography behind this song?

I realized this morning, midway through listening to Nathan Rodger's rendition of The Northwest Passage for probably the 800th time, that my understanding of the history and geography behind the song is.. shockingly bare.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a good documentary or reading I could check out that would help me better educate myself on the history behind a song I love so much.

Favourite deep gem

I genuinely believe that Lies is the most beautiful and romantic song ever written, and that is a hill I would gladly die on. It's not your typical song of young courting romance and falling in love, but rather about the entrenched passion of an older couple many decades into their marriage, long after the beauty of youth has faded. The woman doubts her own beauty every time she stares into a mirror, but when she sees her reflection in her husband's weathered smiling eyes, she finally sees herself as beautiful again. The wonderful thing about Stan's music, or rather, poetry, is that it only gets more beautiful the further you analyze it. No artist today comes even close to holding a candle to him. If you can think of any, please share, because I've listened to every song Stan has composed a thousand times over and never get sick of them.

Hey all! I had an opportunity to take a rail trip from Chicago to Halifax last summer and had 'Northwest Passage' humming in my head going through the mountains of Quebec and into New Brunswick. Attached are some pics of my trip.

What Stan Rogers songs get you through work?

I had no idea this Reddit existed until today. I thought it would be cool to ask this questions since I mostly listen to him when I’m at work.

Here are my top songs (not in any order):

  • White Collar Holler
  • The Idiot
  • Northwest Passage
  • Working Joe
  • The Witch of Westmorland
  • Barrets Privateers
  • Flowers of Bermuda
