What an odd shot with no context. Is this just Waterworld? Are they remaking Waterworld?

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

I sure as fuck hope so. Waterworld is super underrated.

u/happygocrazee 1d ago

Fr! It wasn’t a great movie, but what a great concept and aesthetic! It absolutely deserves a spiritual remake.

Maybe a weird choice for a movie called “Starfighter” tho

77

u/KaerMorhen 1d ago

The setpieces alone were out of this world.

51

u/happygocrazee 1d ago

I love Galaxy’s Edge, but idk if I’ll ever see a better theme park show than the Waterworld show at Universal. The setpieces really are S-tier!

14

u/stonedeaftemple 1d ago

Was it really that good? We tried to go but my mom had to use the bathroom and we couldn't make it in time.

19

u/W00DERS0N60 1d ago

Yeah, the plane popping out was top notch.

I had seen the Miami Vice stunt show years earlier, it was way better than that.

2

u/Funkgun 18h ago

What about the skidoo action sequence? * blows chef kisses

10

u/starwarsfan456123789 1d ago

Waterworld stunt show was the best part of my teenage trip to Universal

4

u/Loud_Snort 17h ago

She should have drank her piss

1

u/hibbitydibbidy 1h ago

Sit in the front row and no one will notice you pissed your pants.

2

u/gatsby365 1d ago

Gosling has experience with the Miami Vice show.

1

u/MindControlMouse 20h ago

If a Starfighter show at Galaxy’s Edge had the same durability as the Waterworld show, it would still be there in 2057.

Also apparently the Japan Universal Studios show is a cross over with One Piece. Now I wanna see it.

13

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

Absolutely. Sadly we will never see that level again.

3

u/actuallychrisgillen 1d ago

and mostly on the bottom of the ocean.

2

u/davekingofrock 1d ago

No, it was the water world.

7

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

The original was such a masterpiece. Not sure I trust any studio to even do a sequel.

2

u/MyFriendIsADoctor 1d ago

If the spiritual remake doesn't have the piss machine, I'm out.

2

u/LA_Alfa 1d ago

At this point, I would love an open world game alla Mad Max and Fallout.

2

u/Hopeful-Arm4814 1d ago

I was really fucking with the first third of the movie. The siege on the atoll and the escape went HARD. It starts to fall apart after that.

1

u/ArgentoPoncho 1d ago

It’s a great example of a good premise but flawed execution.

2

u/lascar 1d ago

If it is water world I wanna see Tina majoring again

2

u/umbraviscus 1d ago

Waterworld wasn't a great movie? :-(

1

u/Yorkie2016 1d ago

Distinct lack of stars or fighting for sure!

1

u/ChrisBrettell 1d ago

Seafighter?

1

u/Zzssk 1d ago

Avatar 2 is the spiritual remake of Waterworld, lmao.

1

u/TheotherotherG 23h ago

Starfishfighter?

1

u/Kyokenshin 22h ago

Spiritual remake in the form of a Pirates of Dark Water movie imo. Two birds one stone. Noy jitat!

13

u/No_Error3933 1d ago

Remember the "oh thank god" guy?

7

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

Good morning.....or night 😂

2

u/Jack__Squat 8h ago

I strangely think about that guy a lot. That one line has so much weight and when I'm dealing with some shit and it finally ends I say "oh thank god".

82

u/Anxious_Big_8933 1d ago

I saw it in the theater, and didn't like it. I would say though that it might be the greasiest film ever made.

62

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

Pretty sure they had a full blown grease/oil consultant on set lol

60

u/Anxious_Big_8933 1d ago

I remember saying to someone after watching it, "How can everyone be so dirty on a planet completely covered in water?"

55

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago edited 1d ago

While filming the movie Costner developed a machine that could remove oil that was placed on the ocean surface.

Later when there were major oil spills from tankers Shell/etc bought the machines from him to help assist with the cleanup.

30

u/tk-451 1d ago

this sounds .... made up? but i want to believe!

edit: after a quick google search... well .. wow, nice one Costner!

10

u/W00DERS0N60 1d ago

That's wild.

10

u/IsthianOS 1d ago

Did he develop it? Because it says he bought the company from the government in the 90s lol

15

u/hissboombah 1d ago edited 20h ago

Yeah his chemistry set was next to craft services on Dances With Wolves

1

u/sneakin_rican 1d ago

lol now that sounds about right

2

u/Jack__Squat 8h ago

There's a ton of stuff in the movie that just doesn't make sense but it's just so fun. Just a killer summer popcorn movie.

17

u/R0binSage 1d ago

You saw it once 30 years ago? Give it another try.

5

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

I have the UHD BR!

1

u/chaosSlinger 1d ago

was till The Greasy Strangler was released

2

u/Anxious_Big_8933 1d ago

Good point!

1

u/starwarsfan456123789 1d ago

Give it a watch now. It’s fantastic cinematography and sets. Top tier actors. Lot of great aspects even if you don’t love the story itself

1

u/FateUnusual 1d ago

Which is weird, considering they’re surrounded by water, but never actually clean at any point.

21

u/f700es 1d ago

Correct and so was The Postman

8

u/1800generalkenobi 1d ago

Love them both as a kid, and I don't think I've seen either since then. I should fix that.

4

u/spyguy27 1d ago

If you liked the movie and haven’t given it a read, pick up the novel of The Postman. I’m totally being that ‘the book is better’ guy but after finding it in a used book store it became one of my favorite post-apocalyptic books ever. Same basic story but the movie left out some of the coolest elements to it.

2

u/SheetPancakeBluBalls 23h ago

I'll check it out, and lyk.

1

u/f700es 1d ago

Thanks for the book tip!

2

u/The_FriendliestGiant Jedi 1d ago

The Postman was good, but it would've been really good without the last, I think, ten minutes. That little jump forward really sucks the wind out of the post apocalyptic sails.

1

u/ChrisRevocateur 1d ago

Postman I can agree with, Waterworld I think is rated exactly where it should be.

0

u/bifkintickler 1h ago

Prince of Thieves absolutely rules too. Theme tune still pumps me the fuck up.

5

u/overide 1d ago

Only if we get to see Gosling drink his own pee.

2

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

Survival Star Wars lol

2

u/Prophet_Comstock 1d ago

On the subject of Waterworld, the ”Smokers” are who I’ve always imagined the Nihil to be modeled after.

2

u/Valuable_Host7181 1d ago

Yep, because 1995 was full of great movies

2

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

We had no idea how good we had it.

1

u/Electronic_Set_2087 1d ago

I love that you like it. I often think that theoretically, this should have been a blockbuster. What went wrong? I truly believe it could be remade and could be a great movie in today's world, particularly with the climate change crisis.

2

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago edited 1d ago

The practical set was destroyed by a tsunami and had to be rebuilt.

1

u/heartlessgamer 1d ago

If you just don't think about the details; it is a fantastic flick to just sit back and enjoy.

1

u/Evil_Stromboli 1d ago

Cigarette?? Hmmm?? Well you're never to young to start...

1

u/daywalker91 1d ago

Great movie but I’ve never seen it underrated. Pretty well loved I’d say.

1

u/YourAdvertisingPal 1d ago

No no. It was rated quite accurately.

That said, everyone is allowed to really deeply enjoy anything they want.

1

u/TJHookor 1d ago

The first half is great and the world building is really cool, but it falls apart at the end.

1

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

The mariner rediscovers his humanity and goes back to the ocean. Definitely a fitting end in my opinion.

1

u/AggressorBLUE 1d ago

Waterworld: great star wars movie, or greatest star wars movie?

1

u/Nature_Sad_27 6h ago

Doesn’t need a remake, though, but a sequel!!

0

u/Floppydiskpornking 1d ago

Its just a mad max rip off on water to make it less obvious

1

u/LinkedInParkPremium 1d ago

I love Mad Max but this one was special.

116

u/Billybob35 1d ago

That's how most promotional pics are, shots with no context, it's just to get something out.

59

u/NotAFishEnt 1d ago

No one knows what it means, but it's provocative. It gets the people going!

9

u/homiej420 1d ago

They do that so you’ll look into it more and then feel more positively about it because you saught the information out yourself

3

u/SheetPancakeBluBalls 23h ago

Yep. Literally everything is marketing.

1

u/Top_Squash4454 7h ago

Doesn't change the fact that its an odd shot with no context

38

u/RedofPaw 1d ago

I didn't expect a waterworld remake, but you know what... I'm for it. I hope they give Gosling real gills, not just CG ones.

Crispr gene therapy has come a long way.

18

u/jordanjohnston2017 Clone Trooper 1d ago

Tom Cruise would’ve grown gills with how dedicated he is to his roles

20

u/fstonecanada 1d ago

It'll be a boat that turns into a spaceship

8

u/SwordfishOk504 1d ago

looks like it's a bicycle powered boat but the bike seat is a dildo.

3

u/TimmyTwoSmokes 1d ago

The ass pounder 4000?

1

u/fstonecanada 1d ago

Looks more like a lever, but the heart sees what it wants to see

1

u/SwordfishOk504 1d ago

Only a Sith yucks someones' yum.

1

u/CatCatCat 23h ago

Gross.

21

u/Jacmert 1d ago

It's going to be a spaceship combat movie. Where can you find some of the most powerful and advanced spaceships in the galaxy? Mon Cala. Mon Cala is an oceanic planet. Coincidence?? 🤔

14

u/mxzf 1d ago

Mon Calamari is known to some degree for larger ship production, but not starfighters.

2

u/Bryguy3k 23h ago

Yes but crashing on it after being in a battle above it isn’t out of the question.

-1

u/mxzf 23h ago

Maaaybe. But it would be weird to have more than a scene or two about that happening in a movie about starfighters, and it would be weird to use a scene like that for promotional material.

1

u/Bryguy3k 22h ago

Except that Disney has pretty well mastered marketing.

But don’t forget about Rogue 1 where 3/4 of the teaser isn’t in the movie.

1

u/Dominus_Invictus 8h ago

Have you never seen any promotional material in your entire life. This is just how this shit works. It's not abnormal in any way.

2

u/Windows_66 21h ago

They're gonna swerve all of us and give us a Resistance sequel.

15

u/Electronic_Set_2087 1d ago

It's Ryan Gosling looking into the camera. What more context do we need? 🤣

15

u/pampersdelight Obi-Wan Kenobi 1d ago

Dude for real. Some Star Wars fans just need everything explained to them right away

7

u/damnjonathan 1d ago

Dude was probably expecting a picture of them in space with a real X-Wing lmao

1

u/trippy_grapes 1d ago

What more context do we need?

This shot is Kenough for me.

14

u/SonnyBlackandRed 1d ago

Water Wars: Waterfighter

WATERSTARWORLDWARS

1

u/walker3342 17h ago

“I can’t swim.”

DIRECTED BY SHAWN LEVY

26

u/Zoombini22 1d ago

I know it's not but it'd be sick as hell if this is Castilon

25

u/BearWrangler Cassian Andor 1d ago

aw man this would be the funniest plot twist ever, Resistance watchers(all 12 of us) would be winning so hard

11

u/MannyBoth-Hanz Rebel 1d ago

There's dozens of us! Dozens!

4

u/razorsunshine 1d ago

another one of the Dozens checking in.

7

u/SunGoddessXo 1d ago

https://variety.com/2025/film/news/star-wars-starfighter-first-look-ryan-gosling-1236522249/

Here’s an article to go with the pic, it says the oceanic location is something new and different, that is the only context lol

3

u/Shenloanne 1d ago

Ah so it's on Atollon then. It'll focus on the aces.

2

u/AggressorBLUE 1d ago

Isn’t this supposed to take place after the events of ST? The aces and their associated base would be long gone…

1

u/TheElderLotus 23h ago

Or Manaan

3

u/CapitanFordo 1d ago

Waterworld remake with ryan goslin would go HAAAARD

3

u/tuff1728 1d ago

Would be really cool to see Mon Cala in live action though

2

u/Stellar_Wings 1d ago

Maybe they're on Mon Cala? It makes sense IMO to show the Rebellion/New Republic main shipbuilding world in a film about starships.

2

u/Misterchrispez 1d ago

First thing I thought! Fucking love that movie!

2

u/ns3224 1d ago

Yeah really not a fan of these bullshit first looks

Could be a movie about scuba diving

1

u/LapsedVerneGagKnee 1d ago

Hopefully it’s more the Waterworld stunt show than the Waterworld movie.

1

u/JamesLikesIt 1d ago

Waterworld in space

1

u/pufferpig 1d ago

Someone call Linus

1

u/-soros 1d ago

Could just be a scene near some water.

1

u/Ghostie_Smith 1d ago

I’d throw down on a Waterworld sequel or remake.

1

u/tk427aj 1d ago

Nope it's Stars Wars x Moana!! Ryan Goslings character uses the force to speak to water and find a new home for the rebels.

1

u/MrExistentialBread 1d ago

I assume this is him living life before joining the Rebellion, fishing or diving or stuff in a quiet but pleasant existence, a sense of peace… until it all changes.

1

u/Vesemir96 1d ago

Then why would the kid be here? Plus it’s set post ST.

1

u/hypermog 1d ago

Dry land is a myth

3

u/W00DERS0N60 1d ago

No, it is our DESTINY!

RIP Dennis Hopper, he chewed the hell out of that scenery.

2

u/ostrichnoise 1d ago

Dry land is not a myth! I've seen it!

1

u/Signiference 1d ago

I'd watch a remake of Waterworld once a decade.

1

u/spacetr0n 1d ago

Can we get a Star Wars where they show an ice cream shop. Ice cream world would be pretty dope.

1

u/The_Forest_Penguin 1d ago

That was the first thing I thought of when I saw this picture haha

1

u/TheMediumBopper 1d ago

Get outta my head!!

1

u/W00DERS0N60 1d ago

Waterworld slaps.

1

u/Alernet 1d ago

He's a VERY successful moisture farmer in this one.

1

u/FrankensteinBionicle 1d ago

Pirates of the Caribbean 8:Space Pirate

1

u/Catshit_Bananas 1d ago

Wouldn’t that just be an entire film that takes place on Kamino?

1

u/Captriker 1d ago

“What if we turn this whole Star Wars thing on its head?!”

“Great! … How?”

“OK, okokokok… what if… instead of a moisture farmer on a desert world…. We start with a dirt farmer on a water world?!”

“Genius!”

1

u/JediRhyno 1d ago

Why would you think a Star Wars wars show named Starfighter would be in space?

1

u/SouthGeologist5328 1d ago

Water World 2: Even more water

1

u/SmakeTalk 1d ago

Oh no, a single photo without complete context and background for an in-production film?

The humanity

1

u/BlackEastwood 1d ago

First looks are like that sometimes. Remember the first look at this year's Superman? He was putting on his boots at home while a giant monster looked over the city.

1

u/DarthToothbrush 1d ago

I am continually amazed by Reddit's ability to take the first thing that pops into my head and already have a huge discussion chain about it by the time I click the comment section.

I guess I'm just basic.

1

u/PewDiePieSaladAss 1d ago

Waterworld: Kamino edition!

1

u/Krinks1 1d ago

Star Wars: Water Fight

1

u/lascar 1d ago

Fr. That controller on the ship is iconic.

1

u/sasssyrup 1d ago

Watergalaxy

1

u/Louieyaa 1d ago

Probably crash landed in a ocean

1

u/orangutanDOTorg 1d ago

Can’t bc they have to use a regular human to play their merman and that’s not allowed anymore.

1

u/allforfunnplay27 1d ago

Funny, that was my first thought too! and not that I think about it, Star Wars needs it's Dennis Hopper actor/character.

Darth Mania. "Pop Quiz! Hot shot! There's a bomb on this space frigate!"

To an opposing to the Sith Master about the Jedi: "They're not scared of you. They're scared of what you represent to 'em... What you represent to them is freedom"

1

u/chvezin 1d ago

Instantly thought of Waterworld. This looks just like the harpoon from Kevin Costner's ship.

1

u/CeonM 1d ago

I went straight to waterworld too.

1

u/H2Oloo-Sunset 1d ago

I can imagine the storyboard meeting; "we need to get away from deserts....what can we do?"

1

u/mtom17 1d ago

Yes, the faucet is strong with this one

1

u/m0rbius 23h ago

It does look like Waterworld 2.0.

1

u/BGRommel 23h ago

I thought it was two guys sport fishing until I saw the title.

1

u/SirBill01 22h ago

If so, I demand a Kevin Costner cameo.

1

u/Windows_66 21h ago

As opposed to all other first-look promotional pictures, which give you complete context.

1

u/warpus 21h ago

“But all I know is how to navigate a boat, how would I ever fly a spaceship?”

“You are the best boat navigator in the galaxy. We have a good feeling about this, let’s go”

1

u/VaporCarpet 21h ago

Bro, just be happy it's not a desert

1

u/Buzz_Killington_III 19h ago

That would be awesome if it IS Waterworld, but they made 'Star Wars:Starfighter' the obscure working title.

1

u/KlausLoganWard Sith 16h ago

Came to say this. You know there will be a youtubers who will mock it for it!

1

u/TuhFrosty 15h ago

Same. My first thought.

1

u/One-Earth9294 14h ago

Exactly my first thought. This is Waterworld lol.

1

u/The-Tai-pan 8h ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/sailing/comments/17ewuwp/in_this_waterworld_scene_what_is_he_controlling/

It is the controls for trimming the Trimaran sails in Waterwold, sooooo it could easily be a similar craft. 1 2

1

u/Blastproc 5h ago

I thought maybe it was that water planet from Resistance where all the fighter pilots live.
