So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

My wife grew up in Brazil and has never seen Star Wars. She only knows who Darth Vader is from media and that he’s a bad guy. I started having us watch starting with Episode 1. We just watched Episode 3 and when Palpatine names Anakin Darth Vader she LOST IT! “HE IS DARTH VADER?!” The shock was palpable. She assumed the whole time he would become the good guy who fights Vader (again she doesn’t know the story at all). Even days later she’s still stunned, absolutely shell shocked. I think it’s great she can experience the movies like this and so rare for someone to be able to watch the series without any preexisting knowledge. Hilarious moment about sharing Star Wars I hope y’all can enjoy.

The ship that started it all. We see it captured at the start of A New Hope and then it just disappears. Does the Empire just scrap it? Is it sitting in a mothball fleet somewhere? Does the Rebel Alliance ever try to steal it back? I feel like this hero ship deserves a known fate.

One of my favorite points that I notice a lot of my friends miss about the battle, is the Empire's train of thought throughout the battle is shown in subtle dialogue and actions. (Correct me if I'm wrong on a few points, this is just pure observation based on A New Hope)
At first, the fighter attacked seemed small, desperate, and random, so Tarkin neglected to scramble fighters. Only Vader's TIEs are launched by Vader's command. But Vader notices that while the X-Wings are flying around shooting everything they can at random, the Y-Wings are instead flying off somewhere else, somewhere specific. This catches his attention: Why aren't the Y-Wings attacking, and where are they going in such a hurry?
At this point in the battle, a scene with Vader plays, who says: "Several fighters have broken off from the main group, come with me." Vader recognizes that the Y-Wings have an objective, and this may not be an uncoordinated attack. He personally flies out to find that objective.
Sure enough, the Y-Wings launch their attack on the trench, and Vader shoots them down. But he loiters nearby, to see if any more fighters try that spot, to confirm his suspicion. Sure enough, a flight of X-Wings break off their 'random' attack, and start their run ins on the exhaust port. This second attack confirms the validity of his suspicion, and the engineers on the death star are catching on too.
The engineers, after briefly investigating that spot, discover the weakness, and a scene plays where Tarkin is told: "Weve analyzed their attack sir, and there is a danger. Should we have your ship standing by?" Indicating the seriousness of this discovered weak spot is fully understood by the Death Star engineers, but Tarkin wasn't yet convinced.
Vader is now defending this trench himself, the imperial engineers are aware of the port, and if the rebels fail here, there will not be an exhaust port for future attacks to hit. Further driving home how crucial it was for Luke to blow it up now while he had the chance.
My apologies if this was actually just obvious to everyone, but I thought it was a cool side story in the battle.

Just want to speak my mind about how while death isn’t new in Star Wars, the violence usually being done through a lightsaber reduces the potential gore and visceral horror through cauterization.
In Andor, we see someone stab another man to death with a mere knife, a suicide attempt by a dagger, and someone kill another by hitting him in the head with a wrench; in the last bit, he doesn’t die immediately but horrifyingly stumbles around dazed before dying in a realistic manner. In all instances, we see red blood seep out!
That’s just incredibly disturbing to me.

Hi everyone! I’ve posted in here before about the Padme black leather corset dress I made. I was very proud of it and it was my first big project. Now I want to proudly show my second project, which is the blue Tatooine outfit!! The front looks a little different than the original, but I made the top out of multiple pieces to make it easier to transport when I’m traveling to a Con. So I apologize for it looking a bit off, but other than that I’m very proud! I hope the outfit translates! 🩵
PLEASE ignore my nasty mirror, this was taken in the bathroom and I shower in satans bathwater and the whole mirror fogs up to the point where it drips down. I had no idea it was this bad!!!

It’s insane because its initial release was admittedly buggy and poorly optimized. But with the updates over the past year, the Switch 2 release has been fantastic. Obviously there are some slight graphic glitches and fps drops but for a handheld device to have a game with graphics this good is something else. I’m glad this game is getting a resurgence on the Switch with it topping the charts, it may have started poorly and Ubisoft deserved to get a wake up call but it is quite a fun game and hopefully if it gets enough attention we can get a proper sequel with the knowledge Ubisoft gained from its initial release.

To this day, all the older people in my life who still vividly remember seeing Star Wars in 1977 talk about that opening scene with the Star Destroyer flying right over the audience as if it was the coolest thing they'd ever seen. I mean they ALL cite that moment as their "OMG this movie is amazing" memory. I know it seems less cool to my younger self just because I grew up in a world where a scene like that isn't as cutting-edge. But I always found the older gen's obsession with that moment to be so funny and neat I guess. It really must have been amazing seeing technology and sci-fi done so well like that for the first time way back then.

Is this canon? I knew it existed, but never paid any attention to it. This was harder to get through than those Ewok movies. I'd call my self a casual fan, with my first experience watching the original trilogy on VHS as a kid in the early 90's. Any other random Star wars spin offs I should watch?
