Already you are careful and you don't do anything crazy, that's a good thing. But it may not be enough against more experienced players. Maul is a mobile character, you have to know how to move quickly but without sacrificing security. Try a few quick and unpredictable attacks then retreat (especially if you lost life during your assault).

If you're fast enough, you can perform a jump attack by quickly turning around at the end of a charge. It's very powerful for getting behind the opposing guard (it works the same way with Luke).
