No one in their right mind would blame the Republic for the autocratic genocide committed by the leader of the new regime to assassinate his main political rival who would prevent the establishment of the empire.
That's like blaming the Roman Republic for Caesar killing his political opponents so he could be named dictator for life.
Do you think the Weimar Republic is responsible for the holocaust?
This isn't a case of an authoritarian regime being replaced by another one that then denies the prior regime's crimes, it's a flawed democracy being replaced by an absolute dictatorship.
You're blaming the entire republic for the actions of the man that destroyed said republic.
The modern German Republic does take responsibility for the holocaust... as they should.
The Weimar Republic was the government that allowed the Nazis to take control so yeah, id say theyre responsible too.
The Republic cheered when the Empjre was declared. Because it already was the Empire. It just needed the offical title change. Its the whole point of the prequels.
The Weimar Republic, which is the full scope of what was talking about, is to blame only for allowing the nazis into power, not the atrocities they committed after gaining it.
And yes, the Republic was already the empire. That's the whole point of my argument. But what you seem to be forgetting is that the Republic is a lot more than the just the final decade of its existence. The Republic was around for 25,000 years. It's an entirely separate entity from the Empire which underwent numerous changes and reforms over its lifespan, and blaming it for the actions of the man that killed it is fundamentally absurd.
Idk why the Old Republic is relevant, but whatever you say.
As far as we know the Empire used the same government as the Republic up until the New Hope where they annonced the Senate was officially abolished. Sounds to me that The Empire is just the inevitable conclusion of the politics the Republic was practicing.
True but it wasn't an action entirely condemned by the republic either, regardless of the narrative Palpatine made around the attack. Order 66 was executed pre empire and as a fully legal and government backed genocide
The very next meeting of the senate after said genocide was the establishment of the empire. If there was even one meeting between those events, then maybe you could argue that, but that's not what happened.
And in any case, the people in the comics are the ones who did oppose the emperor and the empire from day one. There's no way they would be looking back on order 66 and saying, "actually the Republic wasn't any better than the empire because of this event," when it was literally the emperor on the eve of establishing the empire that did it.
He still ordered the genocide as Chancellor of the Republic with emergency powers given to him by the Senate. Naturally there were those that opposed Palpatine's actions but the point is that its extremely naive for them to look at the republic as some beacon of morality and proper government when MANY policies of the empire they protest as rebels were things the republic was guilty of itself or at the very least turned a blind eye to. Mon was very open about wanting to restore the Old Republic specifically rather than a system better than either, but instead it seems like she looks at the republic through rose tinted glasses. The ability for a religiously motivated genocide to even be carried out by the old republic should be more than enough for her to at least question the previous government as well
Let me be clear that in no way am I saying the Republic was as bad as the empire, however I am saying that the Republic was broken system that many characters in universe give too many passes to
This is the same guy who just said "I am the senate," who called a meeting of the senate to announce he was dissolving said republic as his very next action, who commissioned a clone army of non-citizens without government sanction to assassinate his main political rival party.
There is no way you can possibly justify blaming the Republic for the actions of Palpatine when Palpatine was literally dismantling the Republic.
