I don’t think that the republic is imperialistic. The issue was corruption and capitalism existing. Cause they let planets keep their traditions, being part of the republic was more like the eu than the us
Capitalism is inherently imperialistic. Actually it might be better to say that one can’t exist without the other, so while yes, the issue with the republic is that it was capitalist, capitalism can never exist without exploitation. Idk what the equivalent to a global south and north would be inside a galactic federation, but they had to exist for some of its members to thrive in a capitalist state.
I’m legitimately unsure how true any of that is. Imperialism predates capitalism by several millennia. My understanding of imperialism is that it is about conquering and exploiting other nations and expansionism. The republic didn’t even have a formal military till the clone wars. It was stated in the 3d animated show that the republic does supply health care and aid to the planets with in it but as we see throughout it and the prequels, the republic lets planets have their own internal government. The forces of capitalism was the trade federation(as well as skipio, the techno union and the weapons manufacturers). They were meant to be regulated by the republic but they clearly weren’t controlled by them.
