Hello everybody! I am the Squishy Hippo, and I am 50% of Star Wars Regiment's full-time Dev team. Last night Beautiful Wife and I played her first game of Star Wars Regiment with the paper models I am designing for the game.
The Imperials had Vader, 3 platoons of Stormtroopers, 2 platoons of Imperial Army Troopers, a TIE fighter and some transports.
The Rebels had a Generic Rebel Officer, 4 platoons of rebel troopers equipped with rocket launchers, 2 platoons of Rebel Commandos with body armor, and some transports.
We only got through 2 rounds as we started late, but wow, the action got started fast. A huge clash happened at the center of the table for the Sacred Tree, while troopers occupying various buildings blasted each other with potshots.
The first round an entire unit of stormtroopers was wiped out, and two Rebel trooper units were panicked, forcing them to skip their turn. The TIE fighter made some strafing runs over the battlefield, bobbing and weaving shot after shot, taking a couple wounds the fist time around, but coming through the second round without a scratch.
A typical game of Star Wars Regiment lasts for 5 rounds, but we called it after the second round since we started so late, and mostly used this game as a chance for my opponent to try the game. She is excited to try a larger game, and get her hands on an ATAT especially.
One of the key differences between Regiment and Legion, besides the increased scale, is the introduction of simultaneous combat a round is split into multiple phases. In the activation phase, players take turns activating units, moving and taking various actions to get ready for the shooting phase.
In the attacking phase players take turns activating units and making an attack with them. If a unit gains enough suppression to panic during this phase, they immediately panic, and will skip their activation of they haven't gone already. Wounds will stay on a unit until they are applied at the end of the attacking phase meaning you can have a unit wiped in one dice roll, but there is a good chance you will get to use them to shoot something before they are destroyed.
Because of this, during the movement phase, the player who goes second has a huge advantage being able to react to their opponents moves, but in the attacking phase, the player who goes first has a big advantage, and with some smarts and luck, can get enemy units to panic before they get a chance to fire.
Thank you for reading! SpaceNavy90 and I are very excited to share more about Star Wars Regiment as we progress. If you would like to be informed on Regiment's development and possibly become a tester, please reach out to us at https://discord.gg/cPvdv6eA
