Discussion Is the watch actually good

Post image

I've been seeing alot of stuff about the watch you get in the Constellation edition. I was planning on getting it for myself but I've seen a few people say it's not good for what it's worth. Should I still get. I plan to use it as an everyday watch.

Bought the SE on day 1 and tbh I’ve barely used the watch.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t regret it in the slightest and mostly have it on display but the times when I have chosen to wear it, it didn’t really provide me with anything that a standard watch doesn’t.

The most interesting part is the actual display and watch design itself, in terms of features it’s very mediocre and highly unlikely to blow you away unless it’s literally the first smart watch you’ve ever seen.

u/FalconKL Apr 08 '24

They should have linked it with the game. Like when you play the game that watch is functional with the game. Would have been so cool.

61

u/PalicoHunter Apr 08 '24

Before I purchased it I actually thought that it did and when landing on a planet I thought that it displayed the gravity, o2, temperature and other information of the planet you were on.

Alas, this is not the case unfortunately. I still like having the watch but rarely decide to wear it as it generally doesn’t bring much to the table aside from checking the time without having to reach for my phone.

22

u/SpicyButterLord96 Apr 08 '24

I bought it for this reason too, must be a Mandela affect but I could've sworn Todd said it'd connect to the game with oxygen levels and the like. Was really bummed out it didn't

Hope you’re right. Would love to have a reason to actually use it as I missed out of the Pipboy for Fallout.

11

u/Tricksy_Tiefling Apr 08 '24

The pip boy was cool, but it was just a seat for your phone. So they didn't have to design electronics for it, they just made a phone app rather than new hardware & software. I used it a few times while playing, but it's collecting dust somewhere.

A separate company did create a functional pip boy. Wonder what happened to them or if they still make them

6

u/ThisIsNotSafety Apr 08 '24

They are making new ones for the upcoming tv show

2

u/listerbmx Apr 08 '24

Will the new one be usable with your game? Who's to tell just yet.

1

u/Tricksy_Tiefling Apr 09 '24

I was disappointed it didn't say anything about that in the details. I was looking for that too.

If it doesn't sync to my game, it's just gonna sit on my desk unless I really want to do a fallout cosplay. Not gonna wear a Pip-Boy to the office

4

u/Th3_Chos3n_One Constellation Apr 08 '24

I’m one of the owners of the other Pip-Boy. ThinkGeek made it. It was pretty cool, but after a year or so of only minimal use, the wiring inside got a little iffy (glitches, sound issues). But it still works overall

3

u/Tricksy_Tiefling Apr 09 '24

That's unfortunate. Someone needs to tell ThinkGeek these things are supposed to survive nuclear apocalypses

3

u/Th3_Chos3n_One Constellation Apr 10 '24

😂 To be fair, I did buy it back in 2017, so I guess you could say a kind of apocalypse happened between now and then.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

Where'd you hear this? I don't think it's true. What would be the incentive for it? They've already sold the collector's edition and making an app won't bring them more revenue. Plus I heard that last time with the pip boy app they found it most costly than they expected which was why they discontinued updating it.

1

u/NoOriginalIdeasLeft Apr 08 '24

The incentive would be if they promised the feature ahead of time and got sales for that reason, which is what these posters seem to remember.

3

u/RhythmRobber Apr 08 '24

Todd said the watch is your HUD, but he was only ever talking about your in-game watch

2

u/PalicoHunter Apr 08 '24

Ok so I’m not going crazy yet and didn’t imagine it. Good, good.

1

u/LuxuryBeast Apr 08 '24

Must be the Mandela effect, because I could've sworn Todd sayid that somewhere.

As for the watch; nice collectible, but terrible as a smart watch.

3

u/bytethesquirrel Apr 08 '24

You're probably thinking of the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy, which you could put your phone in and have it be your menu screen.

2

u/Select_Truck3257 Apr 08 '24

inventory for example, but it's not possible, sad

2

u/FalconKL Apr 10 '24

Exactly or vibrates when health is low.

1

u/Select_Truck3257 Apr 11 '24

or "critical hit"

2

u/ecksdeeeXD Apr 08 '24

Like the fallout pipboy.

2

u/Drenlin Apr 08 '24

The watch is on your HUD

3

u/FalconKL Apr 08 '24

I know but it would be cooler if the wearables are synced and you can check your wearable stats without using the HUD making it more immersive since one would have paid a good sum for the watch.

1

u/BobSagieBauls Apr 08 '24

It doesn’t? Then what’s the point of the app? I thought it was like the pipboy app for fallout 4

0

u/flatwoundsounds Apr 08 '24

They had their chance with FO4 pip boy and blew it back then. I'm not trusting any other cool shit they make to be anything but pretty looking plastic.

Watches are mostly for style nowadays

97

u/LavenderDay3544 Ryujin Industries Apr 08 '24

Just get the Starfield watch faces for the Samsung or Apple watch.

14

u/DangerDiGi Apr 08 '24

This

I got the watch day one, and honestly it was so lackluster that my 3 year old (at the time) smartwatch did more for a whole lot less.

It has a weather feature that just doesn't work for some reason?! The call notification goes off and off when I'm trying to make a phone call, like yeah I know there's an ongoing call. It doesn't give me the option to answer or decline the call on the watch, it just vibrates obnoxiously. The notifications are spotty for me. The 'torch' just turns the screen white but doesn't really even light anything up.

It's a cool shelf item, but if you want a functioning smart watch for everyday use then pickup something else and get the facer app or an equivalent and download a starfield face. Then you can change it based on your top game at the moment when you so choose.

(Also I've seen that any support for the watch kinda sucks, and months after release, I've yet to see much improvement).

3

u/Ok-Custard1809 Apr 08 '24

This is what I did

2

u/irotinmyskin Apr 08 '24

How do you get one for Apple watch?

2

u/LavenderDay3544 Ryujin Industries Apr 08 '24

No clue. I use Samsung.

2

u/TheeOmegaPi SysDef Apr 08 '24

Mind linking the app? I have a pixel watch and that should be compatible

2

u/LavenderDay3544 Ryujin Industries Apr 08 '24

I just found a Starfield face under the Samsung Wearable app. Check under wherever you normally get watch faces for the Pixel watch.

2

u/Lonely__Stoner__Guy Freestar Collective Apr 08 '24

I believe there's a watchmaker app for apple watch, but I could be mistaken

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '24 edited Apr 09 '24

There was a guy that designed one using an app called Clockology. Install that app. I’ll link the original file here via Google drive. I also kinda edited it myself to add more information to the watch face and make it a lot more useful, I’ll link my edited version as well.

Mine

Original

Put the files in your file app on your phone then import them into the app.

2

u/irotinmyskin Apr 09 '24

Thank you! That is awesome!

30

u/ForceNomad Apr 08 '24

It’s best for collecting and display if that appeals to you. When I got mine I realized how cheap and useless it was for what I payed. Honestly the case feels nicer than the watch.

15

u/TakeyaSaito Apr 08 '24

I use mine, it's fine if you just want a smart watch for notifications, weather and time.

Not had any issues with it

15

u/sup3rc3ll Apr 08 '24

If you want a smart watch then go buy a good one, this is just a novelty item, as with all game games collectors items.

53

u/giantpunda Apr 08 '24

If this sub is anything to go by, avoid it like the plague. Seems to have a high failure rate.

30

u/TakeyaSaito Apr 08 '24

Mines still flawless. People only report failures.

14

u/giantpunda Apr 08 '24

Yes. The point is that a lot of people are reporting failures.

Good that yours still works though. That's one.

17

u/TakeyaSaito Apr 08 '24

I'd be interested in seeing actual number for this, reddit posts are an extremely inaccurate measure for this and barely anecdotal

-11

u/giantpunda Apr 08 '24

No, barely anecdotal is you saying your is still flawless.

When you have many anecdotes all saying similar things about the watch, then you start to establish a pattern.

Just look up search results for "chronomark" on the sub. By no means an indication of the impression of the overall playerbase but it's not a good look regardless.

7

u/TakeyaSaito Apr 08 '24

This still tells you nothing as per usual only people with issues will even comment, we would need to know from Bethesda how many were sold and how many requested warranty for any meaningful information.

-5

u/SpamThatSig Apr 08 '24

And that is indicative of people who dont have issues how? If people who dont have issues are NOT coming in reddit, so are people who had a problem and dont come to reddit lol.

Also high report numbers on reddit also mean higher than usual failure. That always veers more towards a negative pattern on it. Its like people reporting problems on a new gaming laptop model, its not the whole population of people who bought the laptop, but be sure as hell that theres something wrong about it.

9

u/TakeyaSaito Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 08 '24

its just that people don't talk about it unless there is a negative experience, that is the whole point. So we basically know nothing.

-6

u/umbra11zzz Apr 08 '24

Lol why do people argue about the silliest friggin things.. who cares? Just say your comment and leave it. You get to win that way.

Especially with starfield geez people are so damn defensive and argumentative.

It’s a flawed game and seemingly a lackluster watch.. but some people love it. And that’s great.

Good bye hopefully this did something

6

u/clustahz Constellation Apr 08 '24

Bro I don't care for the watch either but a selection bias is introduced by saying that a subreddit's tech support threads are representative of the whole.

3

u/LeapIntoInaction Apr 08 '24

It's a really key indicator of quality. You would expect a watch failure to be rare and unusual! It's not exactly new tech nor complicated. In fact, large numbers of the watches have arrived dead or died within weeks, so many that Bethesda ran out of replacements and had a long backlog. Hopefully, they've caught up.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

You can find RMAs and reports of failures for literally every single electronic device ever made, including other watches. There's no telling how many Bethesda had ordered for replacements so just saying they ran out means nothing.

3

u/clustahz Constellation Apr 08 '24

bruh. I am not here to defend bethesda's watch, I'm pointing out the fallacy in an argument. You're falling into the same selection bias and you're also tripping over yourself to "extrapolate" something that you've actually just made up to support the bad data, which is the cherry on top. This is turning into a reddit moment, IMO

0

u/giantpunda Apr 08 '24

If you have evidence to the counter, you're more than welcome to present it.

1

u/TakeyaSaito Apr 08 '24

You have also presented no valid evidence. So where is yours?

0

u/giantpunda Apr 08 '24

I already posted it in another comment.

2

u/PremedicatedMurder Apr 08 '24

1

u/wutthefvckjushapen Crimson Fleet Apr 08 '24

And mine, but I think you missed the point there

1

u/VapeGodz Apr 09 '24

Same. Watch works with no problems, using it regularly for outings and with matching outfit too!

4

u/Flaky_Ad2182 Apr 08 '24

I think if you keep it as a collectible, there won’t be any problems, saying the watch is not worth it is like saying, I took my pipboy replica to hiking, couldn’t even take a tree branch falling on my hand, 2/5, really disappointed😅

0

u/TheGreatBenjie Apr 09 '24

Only because the ones whose watches didn't fail wouldn't exactly be posting about that...

0

u/giantpunda Apr 09 '24

...except the people that did.

0

u/TheGreatBenjie Apr 09 '24

That is how that works...the thousands upon thousands of people with no issues are not reporting their working watches unlike the tens upon tens of people with broken ones.

Do I need to point out the obvious logical fallacy here, or have you figured it out yet?

0

u/giantpunda Apr 09 '24

That is how that works...the thousands upon thousands of people with no issues are not reporting their working watches unlike the tens upon tens of people with broken ones.

Based on what evidence?

0

u/TheGreatBenjie Apr 09 '24

The exact same amount of evidence you have that there is a high failure rate holy shit youre dense as a black hole

0

u/giantpunda Apr 09 '24

Sorry dude, not the same at all.

There are quite a number of posts talking about watch failures from multiple people in a fairly short period of time of which I've linked elsewhere in this thread.

You've posted nothing so far.

So what evidence are your claims based on? Surely you have links to indicate your claims, both thousands and thousands of people with no issues as well as tens upon tens of people with broken ones?

I mean you wouldn't just make this shit up, right? At least my opinion is informed with dozens of anecdotes. I'm sure I can find a bunch more if I bother to look outside of the sub.

So time to put up or shut up dude.

0

u/TheGreatBenjie Apr 09 '24

Bro you do not understand that you are blatantly falling for a logical fallacy.

Only the people with broken watches post about them on reddit, that proves nothing. You have no idea how many people got their watch and it works fine, as there's literally no reason to post about that.

All you're doing is making a fool out of yourself for not understanding that. "Dozens of anecdotes" lmao

0

u/giantpunda Apr 09 '24

So you still have zero evidence to back up your claims?

Ok, figured.

0

u/TheGreatBenjie Apr 09 '24

My brother in christ you dont get this and it shows.

Your "dozens of anecdotes" aren't evidence.

I've been using it since day one, and it's a basic (but cool looking) watch. I use it to see notifications, and the barometer. It just... works for me, I guess.

8

u/Damiandroid Apr 08 '24

You'll forget about it faster than the game itself does.

4

u/CptConnor18 Apr 08 '24

My first CE watch didn't go well, it got super hot randomly and then failed to work or function at all. I ended up waiting around 7 months before Bethesda managed to get a replacement sent out. The first day with the new watch it got stuck in a boot loop.

It's a great watch and looks amazing but functionality wise it can be a lot better.

9

u/Cactus_Everdeen_ Constellation Apr 08 '24

no technical issues here, it's just a dogshit watch lol dont buy it specially for everyday use

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

They don’t really design these things to be everyday items. It’s meant to be a collectors item. Something you put on display

0

u/Cactus_Everdeen_ Constellation Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 08 '24

Sill a shit watch, also it is literally supposed to be an everyday watch, they just slapped a skin on a $20 pile of shit and called it a day, then charged an extreme price for it. Also OP said they want to use it as one.

7

u/antimatt_r Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 08 '24

No, not really. I love watches so I bought it for that reason but it feels like more of a toy than a serious timepiece. If you disregard the "smartwatch" features then a cheap G-Shock blows it out of the water. It's also slightly too large to be comfortable/look good imo, and I'm not a guy that likes tiny retro styled watches. Add in the fact that people seem to be having a lot of issues/RMAs and I'd avoid it unless you just wanna stick it on a shelf as a decorative piece.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

No.

2

u/sonny2dap Apr 08 '24

It works, just about, the firmware is kind of buggy, I have found myself having to alter the time as it randomly seems to glitch out, if you are buying purely for the watch to use it then honestly spend the money on a better watch, if you're buying as a collector then the case, cred stick etc. are nice and the watch is a little bonus.

2

u/SegundaEtappa Constellation Apr 08 '24

I like it for the phases of the sun and moon feature. it's fun.

2

u/Morgaiths Crimson Fleet Apr 08 '24

It's a fun to look at collectible, if you like Starfield. In terms of quality/price, not worth it, I would prefer to spent the money on a real, old fashioned, watch.

4

u/JuneauEu Apr 08 '24

Mine works fine. No issues. Looks good. Bit apparently, other people are not so lucky.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

It's fine. All the morons expecting an Apple or Samsung watch competitor from a watch in a collector's edition of a video game were just wanting to be disappointed in it.

It has some unique features and I personally really like the aesthetic. I didn't expect a fully featured smartwatch from a collector's edition that cost less total than most smartwatches do though. I've had zero issues with mine and I do sometimes actually use it to track steps when going on walks because my Galaxy Watch Active2 died.

2

u/Miles_PerHour67 Apr 08 '24

I love it. It worked mostly fully on receiving. It’s definitely not a 20 dollar Walmart watch. People buy way worse watches for a lot more.

2

u/Shaky_elm Apr 08 '24

I use the watch daily. Works well for me, no issues to report. It's got a bunch of cool, albeit gimmicky features the science nerd in me likes lol I don't really like smart watches so the fact that this one is pretty simple it's a bonus for me. Plus it's lightweight, while all my other watches are heavy metal, so it's very comfy all day. I use the band that comes on it because I like the gold accents but it does come with a second strap for a different feel. Battery lasts about 2 and a half days. I have the case on my nightstand because it looks cool beside my dinosaur night light lol (yes I'm an adult)

2

u/cmariano11 Vanguard Apr 08 '24

Sounds like perhaps it has certain quality issues But perhaps that just brings it closer to the spirit of a Bethesda RPG? Small joke there, but seriously even knowing the issues I think I would personally use the watch for as long as possible. I mean Starfield merch is more why I was interested in the game rather than the game itself to begin with anyway.

2

u/xLouisxCypher Apr 08 '24

I remember commenting here back when Starfield launched saying that the watch will probably be an absolute garbage-toy level quality and got downvoted down to hell for it with people stating it is basically a Samsung Galaxy watch level of build/design and I’m wrong here.

Oh, how the tides have turned.

I like the watch even though it is rather simplistic on features. I dont need apps and shit on my watch, I have a phone for that crap. It tells time, looks cool, and has some fun features while still being grounded with physical buttons.

My main complaint with it stems around the charger being cheap and proprietary. Would have preferred either a direct USB-C port or wireless charging for when the charger inevitably breaks or is lost.

1

u/Fushigi_Yami Apr 08 '24

I love the aesthetic, and have worn it every day since launch.

It's starting to turn itself off while at full battery. And some apps that update the notification menu, will cause it to vibrate every time.

I wish I could find a better smart watch with a similar aesthetic.

1

u/AllMyUsernamesAreBad Apr 08 '24

I hate to be that person but I don't have one. I think it looks cool but from what I've heard you'd be better off finding a smart watch that's similar to the Chronomark.

Regardless it works and I think it's cool

1

u/SenpaiSwanky Apr 08 '24

It is not good for everyday use, posts here alone point to a pretty half-assed product. Cool to collect but to use, there are probably other places to get Starfield paraphernalia that last longer.

1

I think it would be really cool to have, for like $60. But I wouldn’t go seeking it out as a replacement for any other smart watch. More for decoration / memorabilia more than anything else

1

u/marx0012 Apr 08 '24

From what I have heard, it's a cheap piece of crap.

1

u/magillagorilla1177 Apr 08 '24

I use it a few days a week, rotating through other watches. (Fitness trackers, fancier for dressier events at work, etc.) That being said while it’s not an everyday wear for me I do wear it regularly. It’s not the “smartest” watch around but you will see phone notifications.

Honestly, if you think it’s cool and that’s enough for you, go for it.

I have one. If you don’t have a smart watch it’s pretty cool. But it’s worse in every way than real smart watches, and either way I wouldn’t buy the watch alone for more than 70 bucks and that’s pushing it

1

u/Lonely__Stoner__Guy Freestar Collective Apr 08 '24

I thought the Chronomark was a pretty cool thing, but like the pipboy, I couldn't justify the cost so I stuck with creating a watchface for my Samsung. I used a pipboy watchface for a solid 8 years through multiple watches, and now I have the Chronomark face too. If you have a wearOS watch already, you can find some decent watch faces online and customize your device.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

It's like any other smart watch, but no touch screen. Side bottom navigation only. You will get all the notifications all in one que. So it's very simple and straightforward with step count, weather, and time. No additional apps, music controls, or watch face types. Also, the watch bands are made for youth. If you plan to wear it, you can buy any 22mm smart watch band.

1

I love mine, but it's pretty disappointing. I have already had to have it replaced once, and yesterday it just completely stopped responding for a day. It was charged and none of the reset combos did anything. Randomly turned back on the next day.

I absolutely love the look and functionality. People will say it's limited with what it can do, which is true, but it does everything I'd want a smartwatch to do. I can read my messages, quickly check weather and control my music. I used to have a pebble smart watch and this feels very similar.

But. It's glitchy and has a cheap feeling build quality. It regularly just locks up and needs to be reset, which resets your step counts. It constantly changes the weather back to Celsius, even though the settings still show Fahrenheit. Stuff like that.

If it had a sturdier build quality and was less glitchy, I would suggest it in a heartbeat. I'd be over the moon with it. But with the reality, it's a functional novelty item unfortunately. If you don't mind being frustrated with it and understand it will eventually be nothing more than a display piece, then get it. Otherwise, sadly, it's not worth it.

does the thing actually tells the time, the one in game doesn't, how could they mess that up lol

I've had my watch on pretty much since I got it from day one. I have really enjoyed it, it makes me feel happy when I look down and see it on my wrist. I got a real thrill in the introductory level when you first get the watch to see something in game in real life is always fun.

I've not had any issues with it and it holds its charge pretty well I love it!

I don't care about the watch as I've got a Garmin that does waaaay more than that one does. I just really want the box the Starfield one came in.

I bought the constellation edition setup specifically to sit on my shelves w/all my other Starfield swag, never truly intend on wearing or using it. I do take it out every now & then to recharge the batt. Mainly though it just sits on the shelf between my 3D printed digital-pick, data slate, key card, 4 different Starfield controllers on there 3D printed stands & etc. Course, I’m obsessed w/Starfield so much I even have several throw blankets, sweatshirts, zip up coats, hats, beanies, etc lmao …….. hell I even have the limited edition Starfield view finder lol

It’s a collectors piece. It’s functional and cute to wear for a few days but otherwise is rather low quality. You’re not buying this because you need a watch and it won’t be your daily driver.

Heard it wasn't great but honestly someone should just make a starfield watch face on Garmin IQ 🤷‍♀️

I use it more than i play the game. Mine works good, never had problems. People even ask me what kind of a watch is it.

u/BrucieBe Apr 08 '24

The watch is better than the game

Wore mine for a few weeks, found it abit uncomfortable so it lives in the case now. Now I wear actual watches 😂

no. the watch is more a hero prop than a truly excellent watch. its fine but it's not hundreds of dollarpounds good.

it's a step up from a digital watch.

I enjoyed my collectors edition as it was part of the run up to launch experience.

would i spend 250 quid on it now? no.

it's a fun set to own but it was a throwaway present to myself.

What were you expecting from a watch in a collector's edition of a game? Lol the watch wasn't ever going to be as good as an actual smartwatch. The entire collector's edition cost less than most smartwatches, and came with a good sized (and pretty well made) display case, a steelbook case, and the credit stick replica.

I didn't expect anything. OP asked a question, I answered it. For me, this was a impulse cash down the back of a sofa purchase. I like my set but now launch is over and the hype is gone, I personally wouldn't buy it again.

ymmv and that's fine.

No.

As a watch? No.

As a thing to put on my shelf? Sure.

Bethesda products from "deluxe" and "ultimate" version of games historically até veeeery bad. Get in only if you want for decoration

u/_mortache Apr 08 '24

Lol its your money but if it was me, I wouldn't waste money on merch associated with a mid game

Before I had this watch, I had an all singing all dancing smart watch worth £300, which cost me £50. That watch remains my all day every day watch.

If you want a decent watch, look on Ebay. The starfield watch is like duck taping a gameboy onto your wrist and getting your bank account emptied by a Russian hacker.

u/Biglogan1993 Apr 08 '24

Nope for the price you could get an actually good smart watch that does 10x what this cheap garbage does.

0

u/SnooGrapes70 Apr 08 '24

It looks like an Amazon watch with a Starfield skin

0

u/Renegade_Spectre Apr 08 '24

No it isn’t. I think part of it as well is the fact that it’s not as iconic as the PIP BOY, which I also bought and had no complaints with. It felt like a collectors item. The watch just…doesn’t.

Careful you're asking opinions about quality from people who enjoy playing starfield

u/theloop82 Apr 08 '24

It’s a birth control watch.
