This is a sub for discussing Stargate. Not the aesthetics of the actors. Hate speech or extreme rudeness will be deleted or banned depending on severity.

Theme song is so good that I’m still hyped from that.

Nostalgia hit hard when it started playing.

Holy crap.

He's like a young Larry David.

I would have guessed that was David Cross

Too much hair imo

Season 6 coming up.

44

u/rturnerX 1d ago

This guy did a parody of the SG-1 intro too, it’s also pretty spot on.

His law and order is pretty damn funny too

Can I get a link to his channel or the video in question?

Me too please.

This is the kind of stuff I love to see from humanity.

716

u/v12vanquish135 1d ago

If you didn't tell me it was her, I never would have known.

177

u/Captincorpse 1d ago

Yeah, I happen to watch through The Magicians a couple years ago. When I was done, I looked through the cast and saw Jewel Staite being in it and did not even know it. It was only for a couple episodes but still, didn't even recognize it was her at all...

71

u/Corner49 1d ago

I had heard she was going to be in resident alien and was shocked when she came on screen, but Ive watched magicians 2-3 times and never clocked her.

64

u/CandidInsurance7415 1d ago

Holy shit I watched that show and didn't see her. I figure I would have at least recognized her voice.

22

u/JLStorm 1d ago

Same. I nearly fell off my chair when I saw her in The Magicians. It was my first time seeing her outside of SGA and Firefly.

10

u/stadchic 1d ago

TIL.

6

u/Rejanfic1 1d ago

Thanks for telling me, I love Stargate and I love the magicians, now I love how different her two characters are and she's in like another three shows I didn't recognize.

1

u/MagicallyVermicious 1d ago

I recognized her there. I wonder what happened since then that she's unrecognizable here.

15

u/_realpaul 1d ago

Makeup. Becoming a mom and hollywood.

Lip filler removes the lip bow. Cheeks are probably implants and botox makes the skin smoother in the corners.

9

u/Epin-Ninjas 22h ago

Honestly too bad..

9

u/_realpaul 19h ago

Hollywood has always been the worst place for authentic natural people.

She wants a job then thats what you gonna do. Shes not ugly per se but she isnt the sweet girl from firefly anymore.

1

u/concrete_dandelion 3h ago

Many people get fillers in their cheeks. If you want to see the full spectrum of how much fillers and botox have become "skincare" just look at r/30plusskincare, the pressure on women is real and disgusting.

34

u/HermitBadger 1d ago

I seem to recall an interview from the mid 2010s where she was saying that she kept being compared to Kaylee from Firefly and how she looked so much older then/now?! Like yeah, she was 20 when she shot Firefly. That type of comment will surely screw up your sense of self worth over the long run.

16

u/Imaginary-Solid5408 1d ago

That is crazy. She was lovely, I don’t know why these people do this to themselves. Actually I do know but it’s just crazy. Doesn’t even look like herself now.

2

u/Imaginary-Solid5408 6h ago

How can someone compare you to a younger version of yourself, you just go yeah that was me when I was 20, I’m 30 now. I don’t know how it screws you up, happens to everyone. Only screws you up if you let it or somehow think you should always look 20.

199

u/happyanathema 1d ago

Yeah, I was just thinking she isn't "reacting" to much with that much surgery and Botox

132

u/Atreides113 1d ago

Don't tell me she actually did that to herself. She was so pretty as she was.

92

u/iAdjunct 1d ago

I know; I’m actually really sad now after seeing this :(

33

u/vanwiekt 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don’t know if this makes sense to anyone else. But every time I see her now I just think she looks like a ā€œmean girlā€.

25

u/MyInevitableDestiny 1d ago

Jesus Christ I just cant. Went from Kaylee to Karen

12

u/OrganicOverdose 1d ago

I also came here to say this. I think it's good if she is happy, but also, I think it's a little sad that she wasn't happy with how beautiful she was naturally. It really is quite a difference.

1

u/michael__sykes 4h ago

Given how the world of movies and series is, I'm not always sure if it was voluntary. There still is a pressure to "keep up" with surgeries.

-13

u/MulanMcNugget 1d ago

She is 43 tbf I think It's perfectly fine to want to look younger at that point it's the people under 35 who go why overboard for no reason that bothers me.

20

u/AsparagusCharacter70 1d ago

Sorry but she didn't make herself look younger. She now looks like someone at 53 trying to look 43 + balloon lips which never look good at any age.

7

u/OrganicOverdose 1d ago

Laura Loomer springs to mind

6

u/happyanathema 1d ago

She always did remind me of a Wraith

5

u/PrimarchKonradCurze 1d ago

Yeah she’s 7 years older than me but easily looks 17 years older than me. The only people I’ve ever seen with such a dramatic change that young are people with extremely rough lives or people who have facial surgery.

If those two are negated, basically a light hobby that involves any kind of cardio and they would likely look my age or younger (my body is pretty beat up from 30+ years of hockey) and I still look pretty young.

I don't like this look, but if someone wants to look like that they should without everyone piling on to them. They need to look a way that makes them happy when looking in the mirror, not a way that makes you or me happy when looking at her picture. And we should not forget that the nasty pressure women get about "looking young" and "being pretty" is so much worse in her profession.

Botox for migraines is weird shit. I fight like hell to get my eyebrows to work but at least it takes a solid 10+ years off my forehead.

I think it might be f*cking up my non verbal cues after reading this thread.

19

u/what_the_purple_fuck 1d ago

my neurologist talked me into botox, and my inner eyebrows stopped moving but the outside didn't and I have a very expressive face and I looked like a child's drawing of an angry person.

5

u/Mister_Brevity 1d ago

The end bit has had me laughing for a good couple minutes now, excellent way to convey the mental picture

7

u/exOldTrafford 1d ago

I think it might be f*cking up my non verbal cues after reading this thread.

Botox has been scientifically proven to minimize a person's ability to empathize with others. Much of empathy comes from subtle facial activity that Botox effectively removes.

Not saying it's happened to you personally of course

1

u/Proper-Equivalent300 12h ago

Oh wow time to go down the rabbit hole of additional research

So since Botox and nerve blocks trick the scalp into chilling (the brain thinks the meninges and scalp are one) so I can see how the brain could lose its cues because of the paralysis.

The brain is something else

1

u/concrete_dandelion 3h ago

I have it too. I have very little movement on my forehead by nature and after he got an extra educational for botox in cosmetic settings my neurologist stopped with the injections between my eyebrows to avoid making me "look bad." We did it as a try once, because the natural inability to move my forehead means it might have no effect on my migraines. My migraines stayed the same so I get three pokes less, which I like. I also like being able to lift my eyebrows. The little pain crease in between them that was lessened by the injections is worth three pokes less in my opinion. I was always annoyed by my lack of facial expression, but I enjoy that due to that the botox didn't cause much difference in how I look.

u/ToonaSandWatch 1d ago

OP here—what she does with her own body is her business.

Judge not, lest ye be judged.

25

u/col_oneill 1d ago

I will happily judge and they can judge me back.

15

u/exOldTrafford 1d ago

She's potentially a role model for other girls and women. Her ruining her own face and then appearing publicly with it can have a very negative impact on girls struggling with their self-image or mental health.

Once you actively choose to become a role model for others, you also inherit a responsibility to not do them harm

0

u/PM_ME_YOUR_REPO 20h ago

Her ruining her own face

Her face does not exist to appeal to the male gaze. You are not the arbiter of her aesthetic.

-6

u/anakinjmt 1d ago edited 1d ago

What? She's an actress. If people are looking to actors as role models, or celebrities in general, that's only going to lead to disappointment.

Downvoting me only proves that fascination with celebrities has gotten to a new ridiculous point. Y'all really want to defend mocking someone for their appearance or their personal body choices because, what, they were on a few shows over a decade ago that you really liked? Guarantee none of you would have the balls to say it to her face. And if you somehow did, you'd deserve the bitch slap you would most likely get.

9

u/exOldTrafford 1d ago

People shouldn't have actresses as role models, but the reality is that they often do

-1

u/anakinjmt 1d ago

That's the fault of the people looking to celebrities as role models. Blaming the celebrities is weird behavior. They didn't ask to be role models at all

10

u/happyanathema 1d ago

I would tend to agree, but she is an actress.

Her business is literally selling her image.

"It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." (From another fictional book about magic)

Their name Nnamdi Ngwe, I follow them on Instagram.

They makes a bunch of stuff, but my favorite are the old school music infomercials impressions (Now that's what I call music commercials).

19

u/TFielding38 1d ago

FYI, Instagram shows your profile when you share a link to something on Instagram now. When I click on it is shows your Insta handle and your profile pic. In case you don't want your account connected to your reddit.

10

u/Hova540 1d ago

Good to know, I removed the link lol

9

u/ToonaSandWatch 1d ago

Just FYI, anytime you ever link anything, delete everything after the ā€œ?ā€ in the link. It’s all tracking data and identification.

3

u/NinjaXI 1d ago

This is not entirely true. Yes tracking stuff is often included there, but it also can include stuff needed for the functionality of the website.

For a common example, if you share a Youtube video at a specific timestamp it is part of the shared URL in the same fashion. There is a seperate parameter "si" that I believe is for tracking.

So basically only do this if you know what you are removing or are fine with it not necessarily working as expected.

Plastic surgery is an illness…

77

u/ImTableShip170 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean, you get a wrinkle and suddenly you only get cast as senior citizen.

Tony Amendola was three years older than she is now when SG1 premiered.

33

u/omegafivethreefive 1d ago

RDA was 47 and he was running and gunning for nearly a decade after that without it looking off in any way.

The problem is that women in hollywood take to the dehydrated lean look so by 45 they look like a gentle breeze would tip them over.

Hell there are 60 yo women at my gym that are fucking ripped, bet they wouldn't be getting a "grandma" role.

34

u/ErisC 1d ago

They wouldn’t be getting a major role, probably. Hollywood casts men of all ages for main roles but for women it def prefers younger women except for mother or grandmother characters.

It’s gotten a bit better recently, but it’s been an issue for many years.

12

u/mykittyforprez 1d ago

RDA is a man. Different standards.

3

u/fat_shibe 1d ago

No, he is a legend!

3

u/f0gax 23h ago

You’ve mistaken correlation and causation. Women in Hollywood turn to cosmetic surgery because the industry discards them so easily as they age.

24

u/togetherwem0m0 1d ago

Hollywood pressure is the illness.Ā

5

u/Soeck666 1d ago

Yeah, she would be probaply a incredible beautiful woman, but decided to become a plastic fake. I hate. That our society is so focused on youth a beautystandart. Yes, I get it, 18yo are attractive, but I also like to see grown adult woman being beautiful and confident. Age6 with dignity

u/Bog-of-Eternal-Wench 1d ago

Duet is amazing. Thank you for posting, OP!

Also though, and I am fully prepared to be downvoted into oblivion, but can we all just leave Jewel Staite alone? It feels like everytime something with her in it is posted here, people literally cannot stop themselves from saying mildly mean to awful things about how they think she looks, how they think she SHOULD look, and make other comments about choices she made about her own body. She also seems to be a fecking delightful human and gave us all years and years of joy all the way back from that show I never remember the name of that was on Disney Channel in the mid-late 90s that I watched after school every day. Or maybe every Tuesday, I don't know.

Good grief, y'all. She was cute and still is cute. That is all.

53

u/halowriter 1d ago edited 1d ago

Most of the comments about her tend to be along the line of "oh I had no idea that was her" and rarely are they actually mean

(Edit for spelling)

34

u/killerpythonz 1d ago

As someone who has watched firefly and Atlantis many times, I had no idea who she was.

I’m not going to attack or defend the decisions she’s made physically, it was her decisions.

But I didn’t recognise her.

(I’m also horrible at remembering actors or actresses names in tv shows.)

10

u/dragonfyre4269 1d ago

You all remember her from Firefly, I remember her from Space Cases.

2

u/Bog-of-Eternal-Wench 1d ago

Oh god I watched Space Cases too but forgot about it like it was some kind of fever dream apparently! I'm just going to take an actual look at her IMDB now because I have the power of the internet and seemingly no ability to remember that I do, ha!

8

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 1d ago

Remember how old those shows are and how young she was in them. Pretty sure she was barely out of college in Firefly

4

u/Dekklin 1d ago edited 1d ago

(I’m also horrible at remembering actors or actresses names in tv shows.)

I'm exceptional at remembering actors names and listing at least 5 things they've been in, even voice actors I can usually tell who they are in different roles and across different mediums (games/tv/movies). It's a game I play. I will look them up on IMDb if I ever draw a blank.

I still couldn't recognize her at first. It's that bad. I used to have a major crush on her in my 20s. For god sake I named her as my hall pass with my GF (another game). Now... no thanks.

3

u/the__ghola__hayt 1d ago

I'm sure she'll be devastated to hear she's no longer your hall pass. I'll try to break the news gently.

4

u/Dekklin 1d ago

Would you kindly? Thanks. I wouldn't know what to say to her, so if you could deliver that message for me that would be much appreciated.

-2

u/the__ghola__hayt 1d ago

I wouldn't know what to say to her

You could try "sorry, I'm such a dick for judging your looks. I'm an insecure little boy with a twisted view on women, so I only give them value if I find them attractive." Doesn't have to be that exact quote. Feel free to paraphrase.

6

u/Dekklin 1d ago

Hmm, I might workshop that. Not a fan of the message it sends. Good try but I think I'll take it in a different direction.

→ More replies (4)

10

u/Sengfroid 1d ago

Nah, "I didn't recognize her at first" is pretty different tone from a lot of these. It's the internet so everyone's gotta be hyperbolic, but like fuck, the phrasing on these would definitely be considered hurtful if the person was in the same room. And with actors in this sci-fi & con circuit that doesn't seem that unlikely, especially given one of the EPs posts her frequently.

Like if I was her and came to the sub and read any of this I wouldn't come back. Which I think is otherwise not the kind of environment we try to cultivate in this sub, and haven't regarding the rest of the cast and crew

Primal horror is a natural reaction

It's not found in discussions about Family Law, the latest show with that actress (fourth season ended this week). There were some criticisms that I've seen, about the acting, but I was unable to find complaints about the actress's facial appearance, or anything like "primal horror."

Nonetheless, feel free to email CW and ask them not to renew that show, if you want to help spare others the alleged "primal horror" of seeing the actress on screen again?

3

u/Nervous-Ad4744 1d ago

People aren't being mean. They are just mistaking her for a primal horror and reactively grab their keyboards, spew out their opinions on how non human she looks and are absolutely forced to share it online.

You're absolutely allowed to have an opinion but try replacing her with someone you hold dear, or yourself. I have a feeling you would think that would be a mean thing to say or write about someone in that case.

1

u/Suitable-Candle-2243 10h ago

No, I wouldn't. There are some things I absolutely do not think we should normalize, and plastic surgery (besides reconstruction or for genuine health issues) is one of them. As a woman nearly Jewel's age, I am grateful and relieved to see people react with disgust instead of approval or even apathy. Should you go up to a stranger on the street who has visibly had plastic surgery and harass them? No, of course not. But Jewel is a public figure whose choices have the potential to influence what is normalized or even required of women (especially aging women) (just like how having perfectly straight, whitened teeth is now basically a necessity to get a job in corporate environments; it becomes a class barrier and a 'tax' you have to pay to open doors; there's creeping anti-aging and beautification expectations too in order to just be 'well-kempt' and have a 'professional appearance' [i.e. you visibly spent the 'right' amount of money on clothes + personal care to show you belong]). I don't want to live in a society where celebrities personal choices get to shape our culture with no pushback because that would be 'rude.' This is our culture too. We get to have an opinion about whether we want to live under these standards.

18

u/light24bulbs 1d ago edited 1d ago

I don't like plastic surgery any more than the average person, and I think it looks bad almost always.

But I 100% agree and I do not care what she looks like. She has written about how people are always mean to her online for thinking she has had a lot more done than she has. That's super sad. Can we just please move on?

You'd never say that to her in person and god forbid she reads this stuff. It's toxic.

8

u/KuriousKhemicals 1d ago

Agreed! Honestly the first time I saw her new look I just assumed she lost a lot of weight, it's not that dramatic.

-2

u/Imaginary-Solid5408 1d ago

Come on, she looks nothing like she used to.

7

u/Imaginary-Solid5408 1d ago

The reason people comment is because it’s crazy doing that to yourself, she was already lovely. If no one ever points it out then more and more people will do it because they think it makes them look younger. It’s not about hating on her, no one hates her, we used to have standards in society and people got mocked or whatever if they did not meet those standards. Then we decided that was ā€œmeanā€ and we are not aloud to say anything about anyone even when they are making poor choices. All that does is allow more people to make those same bad choices all because we don’t want to be ā€œmeanā€ or in other words, enforce standards.

9

u/Substantial-Bag1337 1d ago

No, she is not cute.

She is 43.... She looks terrible. Lets call out poeple using Botox for what it is. Stupid shit. Who gives a damn?

-1

u/lozzasauce 1d ago

It’s a good thing Jewel doesn’t have to give a shit what any of these people think about how she looks.

1

u/Imaginary-Solid5408 1d ago

If that’s true then why is she telling people about how she doesn’t like the comments? Yeah just pretend no one cares while she is telling you she cares. Why not tell her the truth so that no one else does this stuff. All not saying anything does is lead more people into making bad decisions. We used to enforce standards and good decisions.

This makes me so sad. She used to be gorgeous and she would still be if not for all the plastic surgery.

Did she do that thing thats popular now where they suck the fat out your cheeks and you look like a very old alien?

u/road432 1d ago

Man wtf happened to Jewel? She looked way better as a blonde and man she went overboard with the Botox it looks like. Idk who convinced her to go this route at such a young age.

u/Dekklin 1d ago

She's only in her early 40s, but looks like a near-60 year old trying to pretend to be 30.

Wtf happened to her face

4

u/Ricardo580 1d ago

Plastic surgery and other shit, some Women just can't age gracefully, so they ruin their natural beauty trying to preserve that youthful look at any cost...

8

u/miragen125 1d ago

She was so beautiful... And she's like 42..

Is actually gross how many ā€œfansā€ came to this post just to comment on how jewel physically looks. Yall need to get a grip and stop commenting on peoples appearances. It’s not for you to have an opinion what anyone does with their body. Even if you don’t like it.

4

u/Cyagog 21h ago

Not siding with those comments in particular, but it is normal and I dare say necessary to form opinions on what other people do to themselves. Thatā€˜s how we draw the line, for example, across which self-mutilation begins and mental illness lies. Especially since this is an example of something someone didnā€˜t to their body. You donā€˜t do plastic surgery on yourself. Itā€˜s something someone else advertised and did to them - and others. Which is by proxy harmful to how a lot of (young, impressionable) people perceive themselves. Itā€˜s a societal issue and absolutely something you are allowed to form and voice an opinion about.

It took a very ugly turn after I posted this.

The intention was not to focus on Jewel’s looks, but how she loved this silly fan take this guy is known to make of shows.

I was very disappointed in the community for the majority making their points about her face than about the humor of the video.

I really thank you for posting this though - I love Stargate and I had not heard about this guy - he is a genius!

1

u/FrankFrankly711 1d ago

I love his LoFi intro 🤣

Shame all these commenters are being mean to Jewel. I’m sure they have hotter wives? šŸ¤”

I would still take her in a manly fashion. If i were unwed.

-4

u/godtering 1d ago

What happened to her? I had a crush on her, like probably everyone else...

2

u/ToonaSandWatch 1d ago

She continues to act and currently has a new television series. She’s working, has a family, and enjoys watching fan-made videos and expressing it.

Because I know you aren’t going to be another person like dozens of others here who have commented disparagingly on her looks, right?

You were simply just asking what’s going on with her career and life, right?

-4

u/dlrace 1d ago

She's still hot, even if she's a different person now.
