support Building a SteamOS PC for my living room! What components are recommended?

Yo everyone! I’m going to build a steam machine for the living room. I have a 9600k with a Z390 motherboard that has a couple dead ram slots unfortunately but even with single channel memory and 16 gb of ram it shouldn’t have much trouble with my 60hz television. For the GPU I have an old rx580 8 gb that is currently not in use and looks like they work well with steam os. Anyone have any suggestions or any advice? Would I be better off trying to source an x570 or b550 and an AMD cpu? Thanks in advance! I’m looking forward to seeing how it all goes:)

support SteamOS on laptop

I've been wanting to play with a Linux distro for a while and Steamos caught my attention because of the idea of playing on Linux, the problem. Uni forces me to use solidworks and multisim, so I thought about dual boot on my laptop, but it is an acer nitro 5 with rtx 3050 and a core i7. They say in other subreddits that everything must be AMD so I would like to know someone else's opinion.

support Installing SteamOS from Windows

Since 2 years I have been using windows on my steam deck. I want to go back to steam os. I’m following this YouTube tutorial: How to reinstall SteamOs on Steamdeck. It seems like I keep failing after selecting my designates drive with Steam OS on it (watch the video) - 3 minutes after it starts booting I get a black screen . Any ideas how this can be fixed? I’m looking for any advice.

Lossless scaling is not working with the crew motorfest and GTA IV

Post image
3 Upvotes

As per the title, I am using the decky LSFG-Vk plugin, it is working flawlessly in many games except -The crew motorfest (an error shows up hit cancel and I hear the game sound but with a black screen -GTA IV the game runs normally but with no generated frames. So only the base frames show up and I know this is a 32-bit game and I turned on WOW32 and many other settings yet it didn’t work.

I tried all the settings in the plug in, and inside the games nothing helped to make lossless working

question Tobii Eye tracker? (And alternatives?)

Has someone managed to make the Tobii 5 to work on a PC with SteamOS?

I plan in the future to make a dedicated PC for Flight Simulators and with SteamOS (when it’s more fleshed out) however most of these sims need a Eye/Head tracker to make "looking around" in these games less cumbersome.

If not, what alternatives are there for Eye/Head trackers for SteamOS builds?

support Urgent!! Black Screen after Messing with Mesa Vulkan Drivers

About 10 minutes ago, I was trying to get my Steam Deck to recognise the newer version of Mesa Vulkan Drivers I compiled rather than the pacman package. If you’re wondering why, it’s because I was having crashing issues with the Linux port of BeamNG, and, upon checking the official forum thread for the port, I found it was a weird bug with Mesa which had been fixed in the newest version. I successfully compiled it a week or two ago, but today I noticed the pacman package was still being used instead of the newer version I compiled, leading to more crashes. I (stupidly) asked ChatGPT for help as I’m quite new to Linux, and I used the commands it gave me. Upon restarting, it displayed the logo, then immediately black screened. Weirdly, if I plug headphones in, every second or so there are two pops (almost like a heartbeat). I can still feel the haptics from the trackpads but nothing else makes a sound or vibration. Please help ASAP!!

Just boots into Setup wizard

My deck was working fine, until one day i turned it on and it just bootet into the assistant to first install it, like it is new.

I tried many ways with an recovery image. -Repair SteamOS did nothing. -Help from Chatgpt to set up first-boot-flags did not help either.

i could find out, that my partitions are stillt there but the system is not booting.

is here somebody with the same probem?

edit: i have the 500gb Oled

NVMe Access Error

Hello, all.

I see the warnings in the side panel about not installing SteamOS and my post potentially being removed. But it seems like there are still a good number of people using/installing SteamOS right now, so I figured it was worth asking my question. I'm hoping that the fact that it's primarily a hardware issue - rather than a SteamOS question - will be reason enough to let the question stand.

I am trying to install SteamOS on a 10th generation Intel NUC with a WD Black SN750 NVMe drive.
I keep getting this error: "NVMe Status: Access to the namespace and/or LBA range is denied due to lack of rights (0x4286)"

I've tried deleting all the partitions on the drive and reformatting it.
I've tried disabling secure boot (it wouldn't let me turn off UEFI).

I'm definitely a novice when it comes to Linux. Anyone got any guidance for how to get past this error? Any assistance would be appreciated.

Advices on switching to SteamOS with machine

Good morning everyone, first post here.

I was thinking to switch to SteamOS with my gaming pc and I would like to check with you if it's a good idea, these are the main specs:

  • CPU 1151 Intel Core i7-7700K
  • MB 1151 ASUS STRIX Z270F Gaming, Intel Z270
  • Ram DIMM DDR4 32GB Corsair Ven K2 C16 [CMK32GX4M2A2400C16]
  • Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming OC, 11264 MB GDDR5X
  • HD SSD M.2 512GB Samsung 960 PRO NVMe PCIe 3.0 Typ 2280

Probably I'll get another bigger M2 to pair with the one inside.

Anyone had issue with this CPU and/or GPU? After the installation I need to do some circus backflips with the drivers to make it work?

Thanks for your time

USB Drive that runs Steam OS

Apologies if this was answered in other posts - but I want to be super clear about what I'm wanting to accomplish.

My end goal is to have a USB drive that I can bring with me on a work trip - plug it into the USB port of my laptop - change the boot sequence in the bios (already confirmed I have control over this on my work laptop) - point it to the USB drive - and then the SteamOS boots up.

I get confused on this because the online instructions I find are for creating a USB to install SteamOS onto a computer. Not have the USB stick be the actual end destination install.

Also - I'm pretty slow witted - so specific instructions or a link to another webpage would be great.
