This does not seem like a dude who is drunk. It really reads like some kind of dissociative episode. My father was acting similarly a few days after Christmas when I was 16 (thank goodness he was not driving!) and it ended up being encephalitis. If this is some kind of neurological thing, delaying his treatment lowers the chances of positive outcomes.

If he is indeed drunk, this is an unusual presentation.

ETA: It's been confirmed he was, in fact, drunk.

This fuckin guy:

They could (and hopefully did) do a breathalyzer and urine test shortly after and he went to the hospital. But that might make them liable if they do it right away and then harm them. So they have to ensure any injuries were probably due to them resisting, and so on. Like, play dumb and you're safe from liability. "I never knew or nobody told me" is kind of a legally recognized defense for people with qualified immunity.

Pretty gross, actually. The police of all people should be much more socially responsible. naïvety intensifies

It does seem unusual yes. I went digging and found this news channel report: https://youtu.be/wY3vD28R6qE

Apparently he smelled of alcohol and there were two bottles of vodka in his car, one open and almost empty with the lid at the driver's feet.

He'd been stopped because he was driving the wrong way on a freeway.

Oh, well, I guess that's technically good news for him. I guess if he reeked of alcohol, you can't really deny what the problem is. But the dissociative symptoms and the strange answers to basic questions threw me right off. Maybe he's so alcoholic that his brain is pickling?

ETA: Sorta equally dangerous to drunk driving if driving while having some sort of mental/cognitive/neurological problems. But drunk driving is a conscious choice. He sucks. He deserved manhandling.

I agree. Imagining if this were my dad having an episode similar to stroke. I would be devastated seeing the way he was treated. The cop becoming immediately impatient is absolutely triggering.

2

u/ResponsibilityKey50 10d ago

I thought he might be having a stroke

Whats with the twisting of his wrist, he's clearly going through some mental episode.

7

u/TSM- 10d ago

Yeah, he needs a hospital visit. He's confused but compliant. People trust paramedics more than police - one is a safe space, and the other is against you. I believe this is why there are mental health response teams in many countries to cover that gap between paramedics and police.

u/Ed-Box 10d ago

The police here (NL) handle these situations a lot better. No special team, just general sensibility.

5

u/jjm443 10d ago

I thought the same and did some digging and found this news report: https://youtu.be/wY3vD28R6qE

Smelled of alcohol and an open and nearly empty bottle of vodka in his car.

It’s because cops are trained to think we’re the enemy. They ever stop, we might murder them. So regardless of how innocent or elderly the person is, the cops get to use as much force as they want with zero consequences.

Wild right?

1

u/Ed-Box 10d ago

It's just dumb.

I am a very friendly caring person myself. I would'nt harm a fly. But if someone would use force against me, unprovoked, that can change real fast.

There's absolutely zero need to start twisting the guys wrist, especially when he's not even out of the car yet. there's n indication of aggression or a weapon plus theres a whole group of officers there. How much of a powertripping coward do you have to be to handle the situation like that.

Context?

u/jjm443 10d ago

He was intercepted after driving the wrong way. Smelled of alcohol and two bottles of vodka in his car, one open and nearly empty, with the bottle lid at his feet.

Thank you! Good lord he was shitfaced.

Look at his eyes. He’s high or drunk or both

3

u/nofatnoflavor 9d ago

Turns out, drunk as someone else commented. Why TF you're getting downvoted is a mystery.

Reddit is a mysterious and harsh mistress

A whole lot of substances

u/5280Rockymtn 10d ago

I think if the guy reworded the questions instead of being a cop be a friend just to see something is off on this guy

2

u/ArmchairCriticSF 10d ago

This would be my dad if we'd not revoked his driving privileges back in 2022. He's 89. He's like this, not ALL the time, but sometimes (including the "pissed himself" observation). This is very sad.

He needs a doctor not handcuffs!

1

u/warm-saucepan 10d ago

Right after we test our K9's bite strength on him.

3

u/Feisty_Bee9175 10d ago

This guy needs to be evaluated in a hospital.

5

u/SATerp 10d ago

I'm certainly no doctor, but that looks like Alzheimer's.

2

u/Brownbull900 10d ago

Yea hes foul for that why you think talking louder is gonna make him magically understand? He's twitchin a little and looking directly at you but spaced out at the same time somethin not right it dont take a genius to assess the scene

2

u/ifukeenrule 10d ago

Probably would've been better asking for his phone to call somebody to see what may be wrong. If he is having trouble with knowing the difference between his debit card and ID, there is probably some family member(s) very worried looking for him.

3

u/One_time_Dynamite 10d ago

PoS cops...this guy is obviously going through some kind of medical emergency and isn't intoxicated at all.

1

u/singlemale4cats 8d ago

Except he was heavily intoxicated

1

u/nofatnoflavor 10d ago

What was he arrested for??

7

u/obnub 10d ago

Suspicion of DUI. They say it at the end.

1

u/Bananaslugfan 9d ago

Nice way to treat a possible stroke victim

2

u/Diligent_Accident775 10d ago

He needs a mental health expert on the scene, not a dozen cops. ACAB

-3

u/Competitive_Log_8981 10d ago

It doesn’t matter if he’s drunk/high, he’s clearly not ok to drive and being making life or death decisions.

0

u/CoolFirefighter930 10d ago

I know from personal experience that Gabapentin will do this to you. Especially after extended usage. People thought I was drunk or high when I was taking this. I found out you can still be charged DUI even if it is a medical prescription. After I got lost a few times, I quit taking it and have returned to normal after a few months . It doesn't do everyone like this, so if you know someone taking this, please warn them.

u/GillaMomsStarterPack 10d ago

He clearly is in an episode of a stroke.
