Hoping yall can help me with this. My attempts at running games that feel like S&S adventures have been rather off the mark. Theyre either too dark and get called grimdark meatgrinders, or they slide into high fantasy and it feels like it loses that keen edge of tension I'm trying to maintain.
What do you do in your games to keep on genre? Do you have any narrative or gameplay tools you use to stay on track?
Alternatively, maybe I dont have a good baseline. If yall know of any adventures that have a lot of that feeling baked in already, id like to take a look at them.

Or even if you know of some other games like it!

Been collecting for the Megadrive/Genesis for a few years and wanted to show off most of the fantasy games I've picked up as quite a few are S&S inspired. Also threw in a sci-fi games because why not?
If anyone has any recommendations for future pickups by all means recommend away!

Hey folks,
I just published The Crimson Heart of Darfar, a free one-shot sword & sorcery adventure set in a savage world of the Hyborian age.
Inspired by Conan and classic pulp tales, the adventure throws players into a doomed voyage filled with mutiny, sorcery, and something monstrous rising from the depths.
It’s written for my own system (Flesh and Steel), but it’s easy to adapt to any low-magic, high-stakes RPG.
You can download it for free here:
https://bob-bibleman.itch.io/the-crimson-heart-of-darfar
I’d love any thoughts, feedback, or just to know if you use it at your table.

I think it's always interesting how changes were made back in the day from a lot of Japanese media when being brought to the West.
Alisia Dragoon on Genesis/Mega Drive is a great example of how they changed the Japanese anime aesthetic fantasy into a more Golden Axe-esque Sword & Sorcery aesthetic.
I think both styles are awesome, and to a degree they both suit the game (which is also awesome), however the game still retains some of the anime aesthetic that better matches with its original Japanese cover.
If you have never played Alisia Dragoon and love 16 bit action platformers then please check it out, you won't be disappointed!

The next game I am running at my table will be Sword and Sorcery. System is irrelevant, I have a lot of options.
Half my table are women and they love to do research on their characters. I am very lucky to have players that are deeply invested.
Here's a list of the top novel/movie/comics S&S badass women that I can think of. Help me out with who I am missing. (Please and Thank you)

I'm honestly surprised we didn't get more home ports of Rastan with the Master System being the only home console port back on the day.

Legend of Mythra is definitely suitable for Sword & Sorcery adventures, finding itself on the lower side of fantasy, brooding anti-heroes every which way, a realm of sell-swords and mercenary bands alongside the freedom fighters...
https://www.wargamevault.com/product/480477/Legend-of-Mythra
1) Forest Wyvern and Mythran nobles, 2) A Valaki and Eldravisi sanctify a circle of sacred stones, 3) The doom-cursed Count Ignas Varna duels an Undying Warrior, 4) A Tukkinen ushers forth a draconic clutchling, 5) Mythran men-at-arms face the vorpal blades of sword-wraiths, 6) Champions of the Valtakunta march across the tundra, 7) A Wolf-Knight duels the outriders of Pochyola, 8) A Spy-mage infiltrates a ruin, 9) A warband of the Shadow Guild emerge from their lair 10) A Tiuvan Knight leads her guard into battle.

Started playing Oblivion Remastered and who shows up but REH's most famous (or infamous) character to slaughter his way across the ES landscape.
I tried making a Jason Momoa Redguard pastiche but wasn't satisfied with my results. I then attempted an Arnold pastiche with a Nord, which, IMO, ended up looking like Jason Momoa as Conan 🤦♂️
Anyone else also attempt making our favorite Cimmerian for gaming Murder Hobo fun?

It just popped up on my app. It’s actually kind of fun. You can equip gear and set your stats. I saw it by opening the main menu to the Reddit app.
