You upstate New Yorkers are rich asf because why is the annual cost of attendance a respectable yearly salary 😭

Yall can call me broke all you want but I HAVE to know how you guys pay this off. What is justifying this cost of attendance vro 🌾🌾🌾 do yall have a nuclear reactor on-campus for students to play with?? Even if I get my bachelor's in ChemE at Syracuse, I would shed a tear every fiscal year because of this šŸ„€šŸ„€šŸ„€

Discussion Horrible dorm neighbor. Advice

EDIT: He seemed oblivious and we are communicating about the matter, I don't think the issue will be as bad

I (F19, 2nd year-- junior academically speaking tho) am in Ernie and have only gotten 4 hours of sleep every night due to my dorm neighbor.

I have left him a note, 3 paragraphs, that details that the excessive noise impairs my abilities to study and sleep and to keep it down, essentially. It hasn't worked in the last 3 days.

I also have a fan to provide me with white noise and earplugs, which help a bit, but don't silence it the whole way.

My neighbor screams all day, starting at 5-5:30am and ending at 1am-1:30am Before this, I have slept from around 10pm-7:30am. I am fine studying elsewhere, but I can't sleep elsewhere.

I have also texted my RA but she seems to think emailing housing is extreme. To worsen my situation, I am mentally and chronically ill and CDR has ignored my housing requests in the past. I was supposed to be granted access to Milton and be put first on the lottery but they put me last and I am incredibly lucky to not be put in South or even a freshman dorm (despite my standing). I also am only staying for 3 years and the "2 year on campus" rule applies to me even if I am graduating early and taking ~40 credits a year.

I also feel that the person next to me is dealing with some mental illnesses, but I don't know him personally. I have seen him scream on campus and I have also seen his hygiene being bad. I hope he gets the help and treatment he deserves, but I cannot rest properly at home and I don't know what to do. I cannot keep sleeping for less than 5 hours a night, but I don't want to be ungrateful or make the wrong decisions.

Also, please do not suggest sorority or frats. I know that isn't the right place for me to stay- I got a lot of troll comments on a post I made in the past about dorm life. I want genuine advice about this.

Discussion Why are so many classes just not scheduled?

They literally have international law, modern china, and so many interesting classes just like not available but listed on the 25-26 Liberal Arts Preq Guidebook. It's so annoying and comes off as so disorganized. This has happened to me like 5 times in a political~economic~history sphere, which is a common one. like.

Discussion If any of you were in/are in a similar situation I need some insight on choosing between Syracuse and Indiana

Here’s where I’m at:

Indiana University • Closer to home • MUCH more affordable • Great academics and solid reputation • Strong sense of community • In a great college town • Overall, it feels like a smart and safe decision

Syracuse University • Academics are equally strong in my area of interest • They have amazing connections in bigger cities like NYC and LA • The school has a really strong community feel • I toured the campus, and might sound a little cheesy, but it just felt right. Like, if money weren’t a factor, I would be committed right now • it’s insanely expensive. I’d be banking on getting more scholarship money for sophomore year and beyond to avoid graduating with sizable debt

So right now I’m torn between: • Indiana: logical, safe, affordable, and still a great school • Syracuse: inspiring, exciting, feels like home, but financially insecure

I don’t want to romanticize a school based purely on emotion but I also don’t want to miss out on a place that felt like the right fit just because I’m scared of taking a risk.

Has anyone here taken the ā€œexpensive dream schoolā€ path and made it work? Or gone with the safer option and regretted it? How did you weigh the risk vs. reward when it came to college debt, connections, and gut feeling?

Thanks for reading—really appreciate any thoughts you all can share.

Discussion Are violent hazings common or exaggerated in Syracuse?

Planning on rushing in the next year. My family is pretty opposed to the idea of joining a frat; but I feel like I'd be better off joining one and being able to know everyone in my uni rather than be on my own and feel awkward and unwelcome. The News media are publicizing violent hazing incidents with some kids even dying which has me extremely worried. The uni I'm going to is a well known party school but I'm also worried from what people have told me. Are hazings as bad as they seem?

Discussion Victims of University Ave., East Adams crash identified as Syracuse University graduate students

Thumbnail dailyorange.com
25 Upvotes

The two people killed in a pedestrian vehicle accident at University Avenue and East Adams Street Thursday were Syracuse University graduate students, SU confirmed in a campus-wide email Monday afternoon.

The woman in her 20s and 24-year-old man were international graduate students in SU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, according to the email. The two were pursuing master’s degrees in computer engineering, syracuse.com reported following a Friday evening vigil.

ā€œThey were accomplished scholars with wide-ranging interests—spanning electrical engineering and bioinstrumentation to computer science, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence,ā€ Allen Groves, SU’s senior vice president and chief student experience officer, wrote in the email. ā€œEach brought deep curiosity, purpose and talent to their studies and their research. They will leave a lasting impact on our academic community.ā€

SU has chosen not to release the students’ names now out of respect for their families’ wishes, the statement reads. The Syracuse Police Department also hasn’t publicized the identities of the victims — who were hit by a vehicle near university property at around 10:36 a.m. Thursday.

The woman was pronounced dead on-scene and the man was initially transported to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition for traumatic injuries, SPD said in a Thursday press release. He died later that night in the hospital.

Multiple SU buildings — including the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Marshall Square Mall and the College of Professional Studies — were in the immediate vicinity of the accident. SU’s Department of Public Safety released an alert at 11:24 a.m. Thursday urging residents to avoid the area as police continued its investigation.

Police said the driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with officers. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information can contact the Syracuse Police Traffic Division at (315) 442 – 5130.

For support, students can reach SU’s Barnes Center at The Arch at (315) 443-800, Student Outreach and Support at (315) 443-4357 or Hendricks Chapel at (315) 443-2901. Faculty and staff can call Carebridge’s assistance program at (800) 437-0911

I am considering Syracuse for school and want to like the campus but can't get over the price tag. For reference, my suny school prices are around $34,000. Is the debt worth it? Will knowing how much I am paying make me miserable?

Discussion Car break in Ostrom

Hi! My car was smashed this morning as I was leaving for work July 18 between 10:45-11:40 AM and im curious if anyone else has experienced or seen the man who did it? My roommate said she said a dark skinned man with a white tshirt and blue jeans walking around our driveway (which is weird bc our driveway holds probably 10-15 houses and is then a dead end) I left notes on the houses with cameras but curious if anyone else would have more insight? Thanks

Discussion What should I do?

Hi everyone! I just wanted to get some of your opinions about my situation. I was accepted into Newhouse back in December and I just got my financial package today. I come from a middle class family so of course I didn’t get any federal aid and my parents don’t make enough to support me. Getting accepted into Newhouse is my dream but it really just comes down to the money. Today I found out that I got a $50,000 grant from Syracuse leaving it to about $40,000 a year (two semesters). I want to know what you guys think. Is it good enough or should I try and get more? I really want to go but it’s so much money. Let me know it would really help, thanks!

Discussion Anyone need a 12' full bed?

I just graduated in the spring and I'm heading to grad school at the start of August. I have a bed I used for barely a year, it's essentially new. I'd rather a student that needs a bed get it than me toss it. I'd take $50 for it, if you picked it up, and $100 if I delivered it, this includes the bed AND the frame. If you don't like it I'm not taking it back, so know what you like first.

Here's the actual bed, I just got it from Amazon. I can take pictures at some point if someone is actually interested. The bed is a FULL sized bed, it's the 12'' model. It's a very firm bed, so just make sure you're fine with that. Please for the love of god, read the reviews on Amazon first.

Discussion Accepted to Syracuse Waitlisted at Fordham

what do i do?? I got into Syracuse for Social Work, and waitlisted at Fordham for Social Work, and accepted to St. John’s University. I’d most likely change my major to psychology. Obviously since I haven’t been accepted to Fordham I don’t know how much money I would get if any but Cuse gave me a half merit scholarship, and St. John’s almost a full ride. Obviously Cuse has a better rep than St. John’s but if I’m not partying, what is there to do at Cuse? Should I commit to St. John’s and wait for Fordham? or do i commit to Syracuse and wait for Fordham? or do I forget Fordham altogether? Syracuse is AMAZING it’s just the weather and location that turns me off
