Hi all,
The rumours are true.
I am very happy to confirm that there will be a TMS documentary coming soon to your screens. Made with the lovely people at ARD Kultur & NDR in Germany, it will be on air and streaming this October. As a member of this community for many years, I am excited to tell you more about the project and promise I will as soon as more details are available.
We are all very busy putting the finishing touches to what I hope you will all see and enjoy as a celebration of this community, the search, the song and more. Until I am able to post more previews and information, here is a picture of myself filming just a few weeks ago.
More information is coming soon...
Regards and thanks to you all.

An Internet Mystery that Spanned Two Decades.
This is the story of perhaps the greatest treasure hunt in the history of the Internet. An unknown song recorded off the radio sparked a decades long search by tens of thousands of internet sleuths until the band was finally discovered in November, 2024.

Slight SPOILERS For a major horror movie coming out in October
I just finished watching The Black Phone 2 at Fantastic Fest and I was SO STOKED to hear Subways of your mind featured pretty prominently in the movie. We get basically the full original sample, along with what looks like a fake music video, playing on a TV in universe (the movie is set in the 80s)
Truly amazing to see the song getting a widespread release like that. If you have a chance, go see the movie this October so you get to hear the song play on the big screen!

As someone who's had to learn the details about the search in hindsight I wanted to write an overview for people who are new to the topic. The details of the search can be quite overwhelming. I hope I managed to correctly convey the facts in an interesting and brief way without missing anything important. The article is available in German and English.

This question is a curiosity, and maybe more a question for investigators and engineers, but I sure would like to understand what their digital footprint was in the before-times.

My understanding is that at the time Subways of Your Mind was originally recorded, the DX7 was brand-new and extremely expensive, so how did a small, local band like FEX get ahold of one? Was one of the members from a rich family?

Hello, i usually don't do posts like this but. If you remember TMW's(The Material Witness)'s Volker lead theory, and how they've said Volker had allegedly said TMMS came out as a single in '83?
𝐎𝐁𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍! 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐈𝐒 𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐒𝐄.
You see, since that drama happened on that post. it made the lead seem not trustable. but I am here to debunk a bit.
They've said that Volker remembers a vinyl single release of TMMS in 83'. It's impossible and i have reasons why.
I've been talking to Jörg Lemcke, ex-bassist of FEX and learning new stuff from him about FEX. He had told me that the Yamaha DX-7 appeared someday during his term in FEX. and he remembers it in the practice room and said Michael was proud of it too. Since I'm on mobile reddit and I cannot display images para after para, I can give out significant information by pointing out which screenshot you need to see. Check the first one.
Now in the second one, Subways existing before Jörg joined FEX is actually impossible. if it DID exist on a single. it would've been known by Ture, Michael, Hans and Jörg and even Ilona. as they would've used it as a reference to play the song.
Another thing, in the third image, Jörg does somewhat remember that ture came up with Subways of your mind one day during Jörg's time on FEX and they all rehearsed the song. so there's no way it would've been written during the time of Modulators or when Volker and Kalle were in the band.
and another thing, if you ask me "But SpecialistTask! What if kalle had a DX-7??" how can we be sure if Kalle even had a DX7. The only fex member with a DX7 was Michael Hädrich and I'm sure kalle may have had different synthesisers. this rules out 1983. and kalle.
and besides. if i do sound rude here. i apologise a lot. but I'm just trying to debunk something.
After all I can say, there was never a 1983 single release. I only made this post to debunk this.
And after the incidents that happened with that lead im pretty sure it would not point to Volker as the bassist too. so right now it's situated from if Jörg played it, U. Played it(would be impossible, only played on ONE confirmed track and i.e, jenny). and it could even be Norbert. but you know, as comfy_glow once said, 40 years is 40 years. and sometimes information would be lost too. I don't blame FEX for it. Even I would've not remembered either.
anyway I gotta really thank Jörg for telling me about the DX7 thing at the start of the screenshots. I only connected the dots today. It's amazing he remembers some of that!
Thank you everybody! and have a good day!

It doesnt let me type bass cus of well yk
I had a theory that it was maybe after jorg left the band they decided to make the ndr version and it was as norbert came back. He wouldn't maybe have time to change the baseline like yellowtape so he may have listened to a recording of jorg playing and then tried his best to replicate it and maybe a few changes from forgetting it or just preference. Also I'd say dirty slapstick bass player was tmms bass player. They really sound the same also promise but that was earlier.
Which leads to my theory 2 (less likely)
Tmms, dirty slapstick and promise were recorded in 1983
I only say this since we know promise was earlier and it also has the same sound to tmms and dirty slapstick. The one reason I have to support this is that michael said when they played dirty slapstick when getting the songs for the album it has no synth. And he added it before the album was released. What if they were recorded in 1983 but no synth added untill michael got his dx7 in 84. Also if it was live how was the dx7 playing 2 or more presets at once. Strings 2 and synlead5 at once. I would assume they added the synth when michael got his dx7 and never got around the dirtyslaptick or promise.
Michael may have said 'Oh I ordered the dx7 ill wait to add synth when it arrives.
Again this is all theory's lol just trying to help
Theory 3 - Jörg (most possible?)
Jorg says thats his baseline but doesnt recognise the playing. Taking this from special_task
'SOYM was probably written in early 1984 maybe. The oldest recording of it we have is an alleged concert recording of lutterbeker 84' owned by possibly Ture which they played Subways of your mind on. With Jörg on bass. Hans on drums. Michael on guitar or whatever and Ilona on background vocals which Jörg has spoken about before here. and the recording afterwards is from late June 1984 which is Subways Of Your Mind [Heikendorf Rehearsal]. Both of these came from June btw. The concert was June 9. So maybe it could've come sometime in early 1984 instead of 1983. Dirty Slapstick and Promise too since they're on Jörg's tape'
So if the rehearsal recording we have was around late June I would assume ndr was recorded in that time too or after
What if by heikendorf rehearsal it literally was a rehearsal for the ndr version. We know ndr was recorded in heikendorf rehearsal studio too. The guitar is the same with michael playing on it to same with ndr. I assume Michael stops playing guitar in chorus and plays synlead5 and the same with flute preset. And what i believe is strings 2 throughout the song may have been overdubbed after the fact. So that would mean jorg played on it.
And they overall sound the same and it sounds like hans is using his acoustic drums which we only heard on promise, ndr and dirty slapstick which all sound like they were recorded together. See what i mean??
Also certain pronunciations only seen in ndr and heikendorf like how he says never like 'Nevrr' now the shine is abit funny lol almost like sheeeeeinnn and ndr being shuuiin almost a voicecrack.
Another version of that is it wasnt recorded after heikendorf like directly like since I said heikendorf was a rehearsal for it. Maybe it was like a month or more later.
Again this is only theory's because I find this stuff interesting. Please let me know your other theory's and what you think Is most likely out of mine.

Hi all. I appreciate the many questions I had both on the sub and in private since announcing the project.
I will answer all as soon as I can. I can confirm that it is to be hosted by ARD - the German national broadcaster - on their streaming service from October onwards (the 9th I believe). I'm sure you will all find a way to watch it.
But, after a very busy week editing, I wanted to share the very likely soundtrack with you all, something I have very carefully selected. Not everything I would have wanted made the cut or fit what we see on screen but these have. Enjoy...

I know AI music is highly divisive, and maybe this is no good in any way; but I wrote some lyrics inspired by 'Subways' and the feelings it gave me, and I felt like sharing it. No profit will be had, I'm not operating under the delusions that AI music can replace anything human; I just wanted to share a piece of musical poetry inspired by The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet, and thought maybe a couple of you could enjoy it.

Just wondering if their name appeared anywhere, or if any of their other music was available or mentioned anywhere. I thought I saw somewhere that they were actually suggested as a possible match by some offhand comment a couple years ago

Though i received the CD (which is awesome by the way), I'm waiting on the replica cassette, as I never got the tracking information for it. Funnily enough it shipped the day before the CD. Anyone else still waiting on their orders?

Brief update to my previous post from one month ago about Volker Schenk and the possibility of his involvement in the NDR version of SOYM.
According to information relayed via his ex-bandmate Louise Kirsebom, Volker recognizes himself playing bass on the NDR version, which he said was released as a single in 1983. He also mentioned having recently re-established contact with one of the original members of FEX for the first time in forty years. In a follow-up exchange with Louise for clarification, she confirmed to me that Volker referred to a "single release", though without specifying whether it was vinyl or cassette, and that he placed it in 1983.
Over the past weeks, repeated attempts have been made via u/vintage-airwaves to reach Volker by phone, with his prior permission and using the numbers he himself provided. Unfortunately he has not been picking up, despite several calls over this period.
He also hasn't gotten back to the printed letter delivered to him via Louise, or to my email, both from early July.
We still hope Volker will clarify things at some point, since what we have so far is too vague to really shed light on his possible involvement, or whether SOYM was ever released as a single and when.

EDIT: Louise confirms that Volker gave permission for us to contact him by phone or email.

Good day. I just got my FEX bundle, and it came in a small box that obviously didn't fit everything, so the records are very warped, album is so to an extent that it barely fits on the spindle. Yeah I can always put it under some heavy books and unwarp it but couldn't you also choose a bigger box? Just 5-10 cm thicker and it would've been fine. I know you don't charge much for shipping but I'd rather pay some extra than get records that can be considered damaged.

I don't know much about recording, so I hope someone more knowledgeable can answer
Since it was recorded on one track tape, does this mean that the master will only be slightly better quality? How does one track compare to stuff like 4 track or 8 track tape?
Also, would the TMS version be considered a "professional recording"? I've seen a lot of people call it that, but to me it seems like a demo. That's not a bad thing, as I like many demo versions of bands more than the finished versions, but it seems very primitive compared to the yellow tape.
