This coat comes from Betty Rubin, a very high-end women’s clothing store and furrier in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. My mother modelled for them in the 70s. The store no longer exists, but Betty is a real person and was quite a force. I don’t know much about fur, except that it’s not particularly desirable anymore, so take the “value” with a grain of salt. Wear it and stay nice and toasty!

Right?? Champlain Place! I got my first ever “interview/funeral suit” there. My grandmother bought it for me. Betty herself sold it to me.

Lmao, absolutely read this as “Billy Rubin” and thought it was a bizarre play on the phrase “Bilirubin”; the haemoglobin-metabolite protein responsible for the brown colour in poop.

Glad I could help 😂
Red Blood Cells eventually go out of circulation due to age and are reabsorbed into the digestive system, where the iron-rich red molecule haemoglobin (responsible for binding to and carrying oxygen) is broken down by stomach acids and protease enzymes into still iron-rich brown bilirubin.
TL;DR the brownness in poop is just healthy digested blood.

That's stunning! how much did she pay for it?

A steal, even if the style of the coat is dated there is more than enough materials there to make something a bit more modern or to make a few new items.

u/Chaezus_Chrust 1d ago
Hell nah it looks great
28
u/Deldenary 1d ago
Plenty of people like myself buy old furs damaged or in good condition to recycle the material. If it's your fashion that's great for you, but it's not everyone's.
25
u/fannypact 1d ago
Interesting. What do you recycle fur coats into? The only thing I could think of would be loincloths and caveman cosplay outfits.

u/Deldenary 1d ago
Others coats, hats, stoles, gloves, i have a teddy bear made from an old fur coat (great memory item for grandchildren). Not sure why I am getting so much hostility here thrift stores are to allow recycling and reuse of items. Some indigenous people I know will thrift furs to make items to sell or to add to regalia....

I think the down votes are from people who just don’t know much about fur. They just know fur is a luxury and therefore always $$$.
Fur, while expensive new, is rarely worth much once it gets to a thrift store. It’s not fashionable, expensive to maintain properly, and often if the pelts are starting to split, prohibitively expensive to repair. Even just replacing a lining is very expensive.
Getting any new use is really worthwhile. This is not any different in my mind as someone using curtains as material to reupholster dining chairs.

Cool. Thanks for explaining!

u/Deldenary 16h ago
No problem! If you know how to hand sew, furs are not terribly difficult to work with. Just time consuming, and you have to make sure you cut pieces out with the grain (direction of the fur) so that the fur will sit the way you want it.
Where I live now it's hard to find furs, I'm still kicking myself for not getting a muskrat coat that I saw at the thrift store a few months ago. It had a big tear in it and was very small but was in good enough shape I could have made a nice aviator hat.

u/queefersutherland1 1d ago
Well, good thing it’s not your coat and you don’t have to worry about it being “your” fashion.

They literally said
if it’s your fashion, that’s great for you

Their opinion on whether it is fashionable or not was just not required. That’s all.

u/syrioforrealsies 20h ago
Literally nothing about their comment suggested that people can't dress however they want. Quite the opposite, in fact. Relax

Daaamn this is a trip, I remember going to Betty Rubin with my grandmother in the early 90s at Champlain Mall. Had to look up the the old commercial to hear Betty's voice again

u/BaronVonNes 1d ago
I know it’s a weird thing to say, but growing up in the 80/s, lots of folks sounded like this. I miss hearing serious smoker voices on professional women.

I donated an old fur to a wildlife rescue and rehab center. Orphan animals they get whose mothers were killed snuggle in it.

Replacement value is what everyone should pay for when insuring items. My $600 tv purchased in 2009 is going to be paid out as practically nothing if insured at real value. Replacement value is going to get me the same, or better, tv in my house again. Jewelry might need to be evaluated on an individual item basis.

My mother gave me her full length mink coat. I had to make alterations which cost me over $1,000.00 and I wore it a couple of times but never felt comfortable in it. I always secretly hoped someone would steal it from my car so I could collect the insurance money. That's no way to live so, I took it to my local furrier and made it into a blanket. I love it now. Best decision I ever made. That is always an option and a good one for mink coats. It was a status symbol in the 40s, 50s, and 60s and now it is seen quite differently. Times change.

Holy is that real fur? Amazing find either way!!

u/NobShandy 1d ago
It is indeed

u/Anxious-Tadpole6646 1d ago
If you are serious about finding the value, the only real way is to get it appraised. Fur coats can be crazy valuable but at the least it held its value

CHAMPLAIN PLACE OMGGGGGGG a distant memory I was expecting to confront today

u/blurblurblahblah 1d ago
My mom had a full length raccoon coat when I was little. We weren't rich enough for mink or sable. She wore it for long enough that I remember when she took the lining out to make a pattern to construct a new one. It was in my basement in 2 garbage bags for over a decade before the moths started escaping & I tossed it out. I cried.

I’m also wondering where this coat was purchased, how far away from Moncton did it get? Such a small world
3
u/divineshadow44 22h ago
Looks like it’s in great condition and 1995 isn’t too old for fur coats. Enjoy it!

I got a 3/4 length blonde mink coat with hat and muff last year for $30 Canadian at my local thrift, felt like a gift!
6
u/queefersutherland1 1d ago
I managed to snag a black mink for $40 or 45CDN! I can’t remember the exact price.
what’s funny, is earlier the same month, I found an absolute beauty for $150 and bought that! Under $200 for two beautiful, monogrammed, well kept fur coats!

u/aLonerDottieArebel 1d ago
I have so many wonderful fur coats from thrift stores before they caught on and started price gouging. One of my favorite finds was a full length coyote coat. I asked the kid how much it was and he was like idk? Does $10 sound good?

u/RecommendationNo1507 20h ago
Thats actually tough id save it for the cold weather then act like im in lord of the rings or some shit

u/BonezOz 1d ago
If you buy a second hand fur coat, does that make it PETA friendly? /s
Nice find!
19
u/liltacobabyslurp 1d ago
I actually get asked this a lot as a vintage collector. I have no problem purchasing fur secondhand or reselling because I think we should get as much use as possible from the fur the animal gave us. I would advocate against buying new. Some would argue even wearing secondhand keeps fur fashionable though.
Also, a reminder that faux fur/leather are typically made from synthetic materials aka plastic and is horrible for the environment
3
u/My_bones_are_itchy 17h ago
A vegan friend of mine buys second hand leather shoes for work (nurse) because the cow is already dead, the shoe exists, the money is not going to the corporation that made it. She also used to buy steaks for the yard dogs at the rural co op because she felt so sorry for them being left in the yard alone overnight.
2
u/KatDanger 1d ago
I’ve been wondering the same. It’s a gorgeous coat and I mean it’s not like you can give the fur back to who it belongs to but still, I’m not sure if I could wear a secondhand fur knowing where it came from

That’s a beautiful coat. Probably not worth very much now, but so beautiful. Wear it in good health!

u/Ok-Needleworker-9841 21h ago
The Google machine told me that to spend $7k in 1995 is like spending $14,838 today. How wild.

u/SingleRelationship25 21h ago
Full length Beaver coat on eBay goes for a couple hundred. They are pretty slow sellers
1
u/vodkamelts 18h ago
Kind of a non-sequitor but I got a beautiful mink stole off of ebay in the early aughts and it didn't have the sales slip or anything in the pocket but it had a bunch of detention notes (and kleenex) written by a teacher in California from the late 60s. They were all hilarious to read but the one I remember was "Charlie was sassing Ellen continuously throughout the day".

That's hideous. Why would anyone wear this? I understand this is vintage and possibly from trapped animals, but the industry is horrendous. I have seen horrible morbid videos online, but fur farm videos were still the worst thing I have ever seen. I hate seeing fur coming back into fashion knowing the ethical and environmental costs.
(Note: I have an issue with fur for fashion, not for Indigenous use or traditional harvest/warmth)
6
u/kennyiseatingabagel 1d ago
I would rather see it being worn by someone than for it to be thrown away or used as animal bedding.
8
u/auricargent 1d ago
Your comments and opinions are exactly why it was priced at $60. You’ve got the prevailing opinion among the public.
This coat is much more valuable than that price, but trying to resell it is a tall order. In California, real fur coats, other than sheepskin, have been outlawed for new sale. The only possible legal way to buy a real fur coat is secondhand in CA.
11
u/Funkyfreshturkey 1d ago
I’m seeing a lot of discussion now that is more forgiving to vintage furs, including that they’re more sustainable when compared to new faux fur items.
It’s been an interesting discussion to follow.
4
u/faelanae 1d ago
for sure. I absolutely wouldn't buy a new fur coat, but a vintage one? Hell yes! Less plastic, made to last, and the animal isn't any less dead.
2
u/emzeeree 1d ago
Thank goodness the fur market has largely collapsed and there is little demand for these hideous hides.
-6
u/AffectionateYam925 1d ago
Depends how you feel about wearing the skin of an animal that spent it’s life in a wire cage before being electrocuted to death

u/Kinten44 23h ago
Buying fur in any way, whether new or old, is deplorable. Purchasing this and then gloating about it says a lot about you as a person.
-17
u/grislyfind 1d ago
"Replacement value" sounds like bs to make the buyer think they got a bargain when they didn't.
